संस्कृत
अहो मोहप्रायमेतेषां जीवितं साधुजनविगर्हितं च चरितम्। तथा हि—पुरुषपशूपहारे धर्मबुद्धिः, आहारः साधुजननिन्दितो मधुमांसादिः।
हिन्दी
अहो! इनका जीवन अज्ञान से भरा है और इनका आचरण सज्जनों द्वारा निन्दित है। क्योंकि—मनुष्यों को पशु की तरह बलि चढ़ाने में इनकी धर्म-बुद्धि है, और इनका भोजन सज्जनों द्वारा त्यागा गया मांस और मदिरा है।
English
Alas! The lives of these people are filled with delusion, and their conduct is despised by the virtuous. For they consider the sacrifice of humans like animals as a religious act, and their diet consists of wine and meat, which are condemned by holy men.

श्रमः मृगया, शास्त्रं शिवोरुतम्, समुपदेष्टारः सदसतां कौशिकाः, प्रज्ञा शकुनिज्ञानम्, परिचिताः श्वानः।
हिन्दी
इनका परिश्रम शिकार है, इनका शास्त्र सियार की आवाज़ (अशकुन) है, इनके गुरु उल्लू (कौशिक) हैं, इनकी बुद्धि पक्षियों की चेष्टाओं का ज्ञान मात्र है और इनके मित्र कुत्ते हैं।

Their exercise is hunting, their scripture is the howling of jackals, their advisors are owls, their wisdom is limited to the movements of birds, and their familiar companions are dogs.

इनका संगीत भोले हिरणों को जाल में फँसाने वाला है, इनकी पत्नियाँ वे स्त्रियाँ हैं जिन्हें इन्होंने बंदी बनाया है, और इनका निवास हिंसक जानवरों के बीच है।

Their music is meant to lure innocent deer to destruction, their wives are women taken as captives, and their constant habitation is among cruel beasts.

रक्त से ये देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं, मांस से बलि देते हैं, चोरी इनका जीवन-यापन है, साँपों की मणियाँ इनके आभूषण हैं और जंगली हाथियों का मद इनका अंग-लेप है।

They worship deities with blood and offer sacrifices of meat; their livelihood is theft, their ornaments are snake-gems, and their body-unguents are the ichor of wild elephants.

जब मैं ऐसा सोच ही रहा था, तब वह शबर सेनापति थकान मिटाने के लिए उसी शाल्मली वृक्ष की छाया में बैठा। एक युवा शबर ने सरोवर से कमल के पत्तों के दोने में शीतल जल और धुलि-रहित कमल की जड़ें (मृणालिका) उसे लाकर दीं।

While I was thinking thus, the Shabar chief sat under that very Shalmali tree to relieve his exhaustion. A young Shabar brought him cool water in a lotus-leaf cup and fresh lotus stalks to eat.
