Baba Yaga is one of the most famous and mysterious fairy tales from Russia. This timeless story teaches us that kindness, compassion, and good behavior always bring help, even in the darkest moments. The tale is filled with magic, wisdom, and a powerful moral lesson for children and adults alike.
Somewhere in vast Russia lived a poor peasant with his wife and their twin children—a boy and a girl. Sadly, the wife died, and after many lonely years, the man remarried. His new wife, however, was cruel and jealous of the children.
The stepmother treated the twins harshly and finally decided to get rid of them. She sent them to Baba Yaga, a terrible witch who lived deep in the forest in a hut standing on hen’s feet.
Before entering the forest, the children visited their kind old grandmother. She could not stop them but gave them wise advice:
“Be kind to everyone, help even the weakest, and never lose hope.”
Armed with kindness and courage, the children reached Baba Yaga’s strange hut. The witch gave them impossible tasks—spinning thread and filling a tub with water using a sieve.
But because the children were kind and generous, mice, birds, a cat, and even trees helped them. The black cat warned them to escape and gave them a comb and a towel.
When Baba Yaga chased them, the towel turned into a river and the comb into a thick forest. The witch failed to catch them and returned angrily.
The children safely reached home, told their father everything, and the wicked stepmother was sent away. From then on, the father cared lovingly for his children.
