वसिष्ठ ने कहा :—

1. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

अथ वीरवरोत्कण्ठनृत्यदप्सरसि स्थिता ।
लीलावलोकयामास व्योम्नि विद्यान्वितावनौ ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
atha vīravarotkaṇṭhanṛtyadapsarasi sthitā |
līlāvalokayāmāsa vyomni vidyānvitāvanau || 1 ||

Vasishtha said:—Lila standing with the goddess of wisdom in air, saw the Apsaras dancing there, at the eagerness of the combatants for war below. ]

लीला बुद्धि की देवी के साथ हवा में खड़ी थी, उसने नीचे युद्ध के लिए योद्धाओं की उत्सुकता को देखते हुए, अप्सराओं को नृत्य करते देखा।

2. [ स्वराष्ट्रमण्डले भर्तृपालिते बलमालिते ।

कस्मिंश्चिद्विततारण्ये द्वितीयाकाशभीषणे ॥ २ ॥

svarāṣṭramaṇḍale bhartṛpālite balamālite |
kasmiṃścidvitatāraṇye dvitīyākāśabhīṣaṇe || 2 ||

She beheld the assemblage of the forces in her own territory once governed by her lord; and saw the field of the air not less formidable by the assembled ghosts. ]

उसने अपने उस क्षेत्र में सेनाओं का जमावड़ा देखा, जिस पर कभी उसका स्वामी शासन करता था; और उसने वायु के क्षेत्र को भी देखा जो इकट्ठे हुए भूतों से कम भयानक नहीं था (और उसके चारों ओर सिंह, बिच्छू, केकड़ा और धनुर्धर का घेरा था)।

3. [ सेनाद्वितयमाक्षुब्धं सौम्याब्धिद्वितयोपमम् ।

महारम्भघनं मत्तं स्थितं राजद्वयान्वितम् ॥ ३ ॥

senādvitayamākṣubdhaṃ saumyābdhidvitayopamam |
mahārambhaghanaṃ mattaṃ sthitaṃ rājadvayānvitam || 3 ||

The meeting of the two forces made the ground appear as a billowy sea; like the meeting of two clouds in the sky, giving it the appearance of two hostile forces. ]

दोनों सेनाओं के मिलन से भूमि लहरदार समुद्र के समान प्रतीत हो रही थी; जैसे आकाश में दो बादलों का मिलन हो जाने पर दो शत्रु सेनाएँ प्रतीत हो रही थीं।

4. [ युद्धसज्जं सुसंनद्धमिद्धमग्निमिवाद्भुतम् ।

पूर्वप्रहारसंपातप्रेक्षाक्षुब्धाक्षिलक्षितम् ॥ ४ ॥

yuddhasajjaṃ susaṃnaddhamiddhamagnimivādbhutam |
pūrvaprahārasaṃpātaprekṣākṣubdhākṣilakṣitam || 4 ||

The battle array of armoured warriors, flashing as the fire of heaven, was succeeded by their commingled blows, resembling the rattling of thunders above, deafening the ears and dazzling the sight. ]

आकाश की आग के समान चमकती हुई कवचधारी योद्धाओं की युद्ध-पंक्ति के बाद उनके सम्मिलित प्रहार ऊपर गड़गड़ाहट के समान, कानों को बहरा कर देने वाले और दृष्टि को चौंधिया देने वाले थे।

5. [ उद्यतामलनिस्त्रिंशधारासारवहज्जनम् ।

कचत्परश्वधप्रासभिन्दिपालर्ष्टिमुद्गरम् ॥ ५ ॥

udyatāmalanistriṃśadhārāsāravahajjanam |
kacatparaśvadhaprāsabhindipālarṣṭimudgaram || 5 ||

Then darts and javelins, spears and lances, and many other missiles (prasas) began to fall on both sides, like showers of raindrops, hailstones and meteorolites from the skies. ]

तब दोनों ओर बाण, भाले, बरछे और बहुत से अन्य प्रक्षेपास्त्र ( प्राण ) गिरने लगे, जैसे आकाश से वर्षा की बूँदें, ओले और उल्काएँ बरस रही हों।

6. [ गरुत्मत्पक्षविक्षुब्धवनसंपातकम्पितम् ।

उद्यद्दिनकरालोकचञ्चत्कनककङ्कटम् ॥ ६ ॥

garutmatpakṣavikṣubdhavanasaṃpātakampitam |
udyaddinakarālokacañcatkanakakaṅkaṭam || 6 ||

Showers of shafts fell with a force, that would pierce the pinions of garuda, and struck out the glare of sunbeams, by hitting at the armours of the warriors. ]

 बाणों की वर्षा इतनी जोर से हो रही थी कि वे गरुड़ के पंखों को छेद रहे थे और योद्धाओं के कवचों पर वार करके सूर्य की किरणों की चमक को ख़त्म कर रहे थे।

7. [ परस्परमुखालोककोपप्रोद्दामितायुधम् ।

अन्योन्यबद्धदृष्टित्वाच्चित्रं भित्ताविवार्पितम् ॥ ७ ॥

parasparamukhālokakopaproddāmitāyudham |
anyonyabaddhadṛṣṭitvāccitraṃ bhittāvivārpitam || 7 ||

The combatants standing face to face with their lifted arms, and staring at each other with steadfast looks, seemed as they were pictures in a painting. ]

हाथ उठाए आमने-सामने खड़े और स्थिर दृष्टि से एक-दूसरे को देखते हुए योद्धा ऐसे प्रतीत हो रहे थे मानो वे किसी चित्र में चित्रित चित्र हों।

8. [ लेखामर्यादया दीर्घबद्धया स्थापितस्थिति ।

अनिवार्यमहासैन्यझांकाराश्रुतसंकथम् ॥ ८ ॥

lekhāmaryādayā dīrghabaddhayā sthāpitasthiti |
anivāryamahāsainyajhāṃkārāśrutasaṃkatham || 8 ||

The armies drawn in long regiments, standing in lines opposite to each other, were heard to answer one another by their repeated shouts. ]

लम्बी-लम्बी टुकड़ियों में खड़ी सेनाएँ एक-दूसरे के सामने खड़ी होकर बार-बार चिल्लाकर एक-दूसरे को जवाब दे रही थीं।

9. [ पूर्वप्रहारस्मयतश्चिरं संशान्तदुन्दुभि ।

निबद्धयोधसंस्थाननिखिलानीकमन्थरम् ॥ ९ ॥

pūrvaprahārasmayataściraṃ saṃśāntadundubhi |
nibaddhayodhasaṃsthānanikhilānīkamantharam || 9 ||

The battalia of both armies, and the drums on both sides, were put to a stop by the warnings of their leaders, against striking the first blow. ]

दोनों सेनाओं की टुकड़ियाँ और दोनों ओर के नगाड़े, उनके नेताओं की चेतावनी के कारण रुक गए, कि वे पहला वार न करें।

10. [ धनुर्द्वितथमात्रात्मशून्यमध्यैकसेतुना ।

विभक्तं कल्पवातेन मत्तमेकार्णवं यथा ॥ १० ॥

dhanurdvitathamātrātmaśūnyamadhyaikasetunā |
vibhaktaṃ kalpavātena mattamekārṇavaṃ yathā || 10 ||

The intermediate space of the breadth of two bows, that separated the hostile forces like a bridge from one another, appeared as the gap, caused by the winds in the midst of the ocean at the universal deluge. ]

दो धनुषों की चौड़ाई का मध्यवर्ती स्थान, जो शत्रु सेनाओं को एक दूसरे से पुल की तरह अलग करता था, वह सार्वभौमिक जल प्रलय के समय समुद्र के बीच में हवाओं के कारण उत्पन्न अंतराल के समान प्रतीत हुआ। (या मूसा की छड़ी द्वारा लाल समुद्र के पानी के विभाजन के समान)।

11. [ काये संकटसंरम्भचिन्तापरवशेश्वरम् ।

विरटद्भेककण्ठत्वग्भङ्गुरातुरहृद्गुहम् ॥ ११ ॥

kāye saṃkaṭasaṃrambhacintāparavaśeśvaram |
viraṭadbhekakaṇṭhatvagbhaṅgurāturahṛdguham || 11 ||

The leaders were drowned in thoughts for fear of bloodshed and massacre; and the cowardly soldiers groaned in their hearts, with the hoarse noise of croaking frogs.]

नेतागण रक्तपात और नरसंहार के भय से विचार में डूब गए; और कायर सैनिक अपने हृदय में कराह उठे, और उनके हृदय में मेंढकों की कर्कश ध्वनि गूंजने लगी।

12. [ प्राणसर्वस्वसंत्यागसोद्योगासंख्यसैनिकम् ।

कर्णाकृष्टशरौघौघत्यागोन्मुखधनुर्धरम् ॥ १२ ॥

prāṇasarvasvasaṃtyāgasodyogāsaṃkhyasainikam |
karṇākṛṣṭaśaraughaughatyāgonmukhadhanurdharam || 12 ||

There were numbers of bravoes, eager to yield up their precious lives in a trice; and the bowyers stood with their bowstrings drawn to the ear, and ready to let loose their pointed arrows at the foe. ]

वहाँ बहुत से वीर थे, जो एक क्षण में अपने बहुमूल्य प्राणों को अर्पण करने के लिए उत्सुक थे; और धनुर्धारी अपने धनुष की डोरी कानों तक खींचे हुए, शत्रु पर अपने नुकीले बाण छोड़ने के लिए तैयार खड़े थे।

13. [ प्रहारपातसंप्रेक्षानिष्पन्दासंख्यसैनिकम् ।

अन्योन्योत्कण्ठकाठिन्यभरभ्रुकुटिसंकटम् ॥ १३ ॥

prahārapātasaṃprekṣāniṣpandāsaṃkhyasainikam |
anyonyotkaṇṭhakāṭhinyabharabhrukuṭisaṃkaṭam || 13 ||

Others stood dreadfully fixed to strike their arms upon the enemy, and many were looking sternly at their adversaries, with their frowning looks. ]

अन्य लोग शत्रुओं पर अपने शस्त्रों का प्रहार करने के लिए भयंकर रूप से स्थिर खड़े थे, और बहुत से लोग भौंहें सिकोड़कर अपने शत्रुओं की ओर कठोरता से देख रहे थे।

14. [ परस्परसुसंघट्टकटुटङ्कारकङ्कटम् ।

वीरयोधमुखादग्धभीरुप्रेप्सितकोटरम् ॥ १४ ॥

parasparasusaṃghaṭṭakaṭuṭaṅkārakaṅkaṭam |
vīrayodhamukhādagdhabhīruprepsitakoṭaram || 14 ||

The armours were clashing by mutual concussion, the countenances of the bravoes were burning with rage, and the faces of cowards were turned towards sheltered retreats for flight.]

कवच परस्पर टकराने से टकरा रहे थे, शूरवीरों के मुख क्रोध से जल रहे थे और कायरों के मुख भागने के लिए आश्रय स्थलों की ओर मुड़े हुए थे।

15. [ मिथःसंस्थानकालोकमात्रासंदिग्धजीवितम् ।

समस्ताङ्गरुहासक्तप्रांशुवृद्धेभमानवम् ॥ १५ ॥

mithaḥsaṃsthānakālokamātrāsaṃdigdhajīvitam |
samastāṅgaruhāsaktaprāṃśuvṛddhebhamānavam || 15 ||

The lookers stood in doubt of their lives until the end of the war, and old men like big elephants, were covered with horripilation on their bodies. ]

युद्ध के अंत तक दर्शक अपने जीवन के बारे में संदेह में खड़े रहे, और बूढ़े लोगों के शरीर बड़े हाथियों की तरह भयभीत हो गए।

16. पूर्वप्रहारसंप्रेक्षाव्यग्रप्राणतया तया ।

संशान्तकल्लोलरवं निद्रामुद्रपुरोपमम् ॥ १६ ॥

pūrvaprahārasaṃprekṣāvyagraprāṇatayā tayā |saṃśāntakallolaravaṃ nidrāmudrapuropamam || 16||

The lookers stood in doubt of their lives until the end of the war, and old men like big elephants, were covered with horripilation on their bodies.

पहले प्रहार की आशंका से जो शांति छा गई, वह तूफानी मुख्य धारा की शांति और रात्रि के अंधेरे में शहर की गहरी नींद के समान थी।

17. [ संशान्तशङ्खसंघाततूर्यनिर्ह्राददुन्दुभि ।

भूतलाकाशसंलीनसर्वपांसुपयोधरम् ॥ १७ ॥

saṃśāntaśaṅkhasaṃghātatūryanirhrādadundubhi |
bhūtalākāśasaṃlīnasarvapāṃsupayodharam || 17 ||

The musical instruments, the drum and conch-shell were all silent, and a thick cloud of dust, covered the face of the earth and sky. ]

संगीत वाद्य, ढोल और शंख सभी शांत हो गए और धूल का एक मोटा बादल, पृथ्वी और आकाश के चेहरे को ढक गया ।

18. [ पलायनपरैः पश्चात्त्यक्तमङ्गुलमण्डलम् ।

विसारिमकरव्यूहमत्स्यसंख्याब्धिभासुरम् ॥ १८ ॥

palāyanaparaiḥ paścāttyaktamaṅgulamaṇḍalam |
visārimakaravyūhamatsyasaṃkhyābdhibhāsuram || 18 ||

The retreaters were flying from their stronger assailants, who kept running after them, in the manner of sharks pursuing the shoals of fishes in the sea. ]

पीछे हटने वाले अपने अधिक शक्तिशाली हमलावरों से बचकर भाग रहे थे, जो समुद्र में मछलियों के झुंड का पीछा करने वाली शार्क मछलियों की तरह उनके पीछे भाग रहे थे।

19. [ पताकामञ्जरीपुञ्जविजिताकाशतारकम् ।

हास्तिकोत्तम्भितकरकाननीकृतखान्तरम् ॥ १९ ॥

patākāmañjarīpuñjavijitākāśatārakam |
hāstikottambhitakarakānanīkṛtakhāntaram || 19 ||

The glittering fringes of the flags, put the etherial stars to blush, and the lifted goads in the hands of the elephant-drivers, made a forest of tapering trees in the sky. ]

झण्डों की चमकती हुई झालरें आकाश के तारों को भी लज्जित कर देती थीं और हाथी-सवारों के हाथों में उठाए हुए अंकुश आकाश में घने वृक्षों का एक जंगल बना देते थे।

20. [ तरत्तरलभापूरसपक्षसकलायुधम् ।

धमद्धमितिशब्दैश्च श्वासोस्थैर्ध्मातखान्तरम् ॥ २० ॥

tarattaralabhāpūrasapakṣasakalāyudham |
dhamaddhamitiśabdaiśca śvāsosthairdhmātakhāntaram || 20 ||

The flinging arrows were flying like flocks of the winged tribe in air, and the loud beating of drums and blowing of pipes, resounded amidst the air. ]

फेंके हुए बाण हवा में पंख वाले कबीले के झुंड की तरह उड़ रहे थे और ढोल और बाँसुरी की तेज़ आवाज़ हवा में गूंज रही थी।

21. [ चक्रव्यूहकराक्रान्तदुर्वृत्तसुरभासुरम् ।

गरुडव्यूहसंरम्भविद्रवन्नागसंचयम् ॥ २१ ॥

cakravyūhakarākrāntadurvṛttasurabhāsuram |
garuḍavyūhasaṃrambhavidravannāgasaṃcayam || 21 ||

There was a phalanx in a circular form, attacking a host of wicked demons, and here was a squadron in the form of Garuda, with its right and left wings, attacking a body of elephants. ]

यहाँ एक गोलाकार सेना दुष्ट राक्षसों के समूह पर आक्रमण कर रही थी और यहाँ गरुड़ के रूप में एक सेना थी जो अपने दाएं और बाएं पंखों से हाथियों के समूह पर आक्रमण कर रही थी।

22. [ श्येनव्यूहविभिन्नाग्रसंनिवेशोत्तमध्वनि ।

अन्योन्यास्फोटनिःशेषप्रपतद्भूरिवृन्दकम् ॥ २२ ॥

śyenavyūhavibhinnāgrasaṃniveśottamadhvani |
anyonyāsphoṭaniḥśeṣaprapatadbhūrivṛndakam || 22 ||

Somewhere a great howling was heard to rise from the vanguard of a body of troops, disconcerted by a cohort in the form of eagles: and at another many were seen to fall upon one another with mutual shouts. ]

कहीं से सेना के अग्रभाग से एक बड़ी गर्जना सुनाई दे रही थी, जो गरुड़ रूपी सेना से घबरा गई थी; और कहीं पर बहुत से लोग परस्पर चिल्लाते हुए एक दूसरे पर गिरते हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे।

23. [ विविधव्यूहविन्यासवान्तवीरवरारवम् ।

करप्रतोलनोल्लासमत्तमुद्गरमण्डलम् ॥ २३ ॥

vividhavyūhavinyāsavāntavīravarāravam |
karapratolanollāsamattamudgaramaṇḍalam || 23 ||

Thus a tremendous noise was raised by the warriors of the many legions, and a multitude of big mallets were seen to be raised on high by the hands of the combatants. ]

इस प्रकार अनेक सेनाओं के योद्धाओं ने बहुत बड़ा शोर मचाया और योद्धाओं के हाथों से बहुत से बड़े-बड़े हथौड़े ऊपर उठते हुए दिखाई दिए ।

24. [ कृष्णायुधांशुजलदश्यामीकृतदिवाकरम् ।

अनिलाधूतपल्यूलसूत्कृताभशरध्वनि ॥ २४ ॥

kṛṣṇāyudhāṃśujaladaśyāmīkṛtadivākaram |
anilādhūtapalyūlasūtkṛtābhaśaradhvani || 24 ||

The glaring of sable steel, shaded the sunbeams like a cloud, and hissing darts in the air, emitted a sound, resembling the rustling of breeze amidst the dry leaves of trees. ]

काले इस्पात की चमक ने बादल की तरह सूर्य की किरणों को छाया दिया, और हवा में तीरों की फुफकार ने एक ध्वनि उत्पन्न की, जो पेड़ों की सूखी पत्तियों के बीच हवा की सरसराहट के समान थी।

25. [ अनेककल्पकल्पाग्रसवृन्दमिव संस्थितम् ।

प्रलयानिलसंक्षुब्धमेकार्णवमिवोत्थितम् ॥ २५ ॥

anekakalpakalpāgrasavṛndamiva saṃsthitam |
pralayānilasaṃkṣubdhamekārṇavamivotthitam || 25 ||

Now the brunt of battle, began like the dashing of clouds upon clouds at the end of a Kalpa, and the war raged like the raging sea ruffled by a hurricane. ] 

अब युद्ध का महाप्रचंड प्रकोप कल्प के अन्त में बादलों के ऊपर टूट पड़ने के समान होने लगा और युद्ध तूफान से उत्पात मचाने वाले समुद्र के समान भड़क उठा ।

26. [ सद्यश्छिन्नं महामेरोः पक्षद्वयमिव स्फुरत् ।

क्षुब्धमारुतनिर्धूतमिव कज्जलपर्वतम् ॥ २६ ॥

sadyaśchinnaṃ mahāmeroḥ pakṣadvayamiva sphurat |
kṣubdhamārutanirdhūtamiva kajjalaparvatam || 26 ||

Big elephants were falling in the field like coal-black rocks, hurled down by gusts of wind. ]

बड़े-बड़े हाथी कोयले के समान काले पत्थरों के समान हवा के झोंकों से उछलकर मैदान में गिर रहे थे।

27. [ पातालकुहरात्क्षुब्धमन्धकारमिवोत्थितम् ।

लोकालोकमिवोन्मत्तनृत्यलोललसत्तटम् ।
महानरकसंघातं भित्त्वावनिमिवोत्थितम् ॥ २७ ॥

pātālakuharātkṣubdhamandhakāramivotthitam |
lokālokamivonmattanṛtyalolalasattaṭam |
mahānarakasaṃghātaṃ bhittvāvanimivotthitam || 27 ||

It seemed that the infernal spirits were let loose from their caves of hell, to rage in the battle field with their horrid and dismal figures. ]

ऐसा प्रतीत होता था कि राक्षसी आत्माएँ अपनी नरक की गुफाओं से निकलकर, अपने भयानक और निराशाजनक आकृतियों के साथ युद्ध के मैदान में उत्पात मचाने के लिए निकल आई थीं।

28. [ आलोलकुन्तमुसलासिपरश्वधांशुश्यामायमानदिवसातपवारिपूरैः । एकार्णवं भुवनकोशमिवाचिरेण कर्तुं समुद्यतमगाधमनन्तपूरैः ॥ २८ ॥

ālolakuntamusalāsiparaśvadhāṃśuśyāmāyamānadivasātapavāripūraiḥ |
ekārṇavaṃ bhuvanakośamivācireṇa kartuṃ samudyatamagādhamanantapūraiḥ || 28 ||

The day light was obscured by the sable cloud of swords, and the mallets and lances were raised up by the black Kunta warriors, who seemed bent upon converting the earth to an ocean of bloodshed. ] 

दिन का प्रकाश तलवारों के काले बादल से अस्पष्ट हो गया था, और काले कुंत योद्धाओं ने हथौड़े और भाले उठाए हुए थे , जो पृथ्वी को रक्तपात के सागर में परिवर्तित करने पर तुले हुए थे।
