अध्याय XXXIX - रात्रिकालीन राक्षसों से आक्रांत युद्धक्षेत्र का वर्णन

1. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

अथ वीर इवारक्तः कालेनास्तमितो रविः ।
अस्त्रतेजःपरिम्लानप्रतापोऽब्धौ समुज्झितः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
atha vīra ivāraktaḥ kālenāstamito raviḥ |
astratejaḥparimlānapratāpo'bdhau samujjhitaḥ || 1 ||

Now the blood-red sun set down in the west, like a hero red with blood; and hid his lustre, which was dimmed by the brightness of the weapons of war in the western main. ]

अब रक्त-लाल सूर्य पश्चिम में रक्त से लाल एक नायक की तरह अस्त हो गया; और उसकी चमक छिप गई, जो पश्चिमी मुख्य में युद्ध के हथियारों की चमक से मंद हो गई थी।

2. [ रणरक्तरुचिर्व्योमदर्पणप्रतिबिम्बिता ।

जहौ सूर्यशिरश्छेदे संध्यालेखोदभूत्क्षणम् ॥ २ ॥

raṇaraktarucirvyomadarpaṇapratibimbitā |
jahau sūryaśiraśchede saṃdhyālekhodabhūtkṣaṇam || 2 ||

The sky which had reflected the blood-red flush of the field of blood, was now dimmed by the setting of the glorious sun, and darkened by the veil of evening. ]

आकाश जो रक्त के मैदान की रक्त-लाल लाली को प्रतिबिंबित कर रहा था, अब शानदार सूर्य के डूबने से धुंधला हो गया था, और शाम के घूंघट से अंधेरा हो गया था।

3. [ भूपातालनभोदिग्भ्यः प्रलयब्धिजलौघवत् ।

समाजग्मुस्तनत्ताला वेताला वलया इव ॥ ३ ॥

bhūpātālanabhodigbhyaḥ pralayabdhijalaughavat |
samājagmustanattālā vetālā valayā iva || 3 ||

Thick darkness overspread the face of heaven and earth like the waters of the great deluge, and there appeared a body of ghosts (Vetalas), dancing in a ring and clapping their hands. ]

महान जल प्रलय के जल की तरह आकाश और पृथ्वी के मुख पर घना अंधकार फैल गया, और वहाँ भूतों ( वेतालों ) का एक समूह दिखाई दिया, जो एक चक्राकार रूप में नृत्य कर रहे थे और ताली बजा रहे थे।

4. [ मृष्टध्वान्तासिवलिते दिननागेन्द्रमस्तके ।

संध्यारागारुणं कीर्णं तारानिकरमौक्तिकम् ॥ ४ ॥

mṛṣṭadhvāntāsivalite dinanāgendramastake |
saṃdhyārāgāruṇaṃ kīrṇaṃ tārānikaramauktikam || 4 ||

The face of the day like that of an elephant, being besmeared with the blackness of night fall, was again painted by the light of evening with the pearly spots of stars on the cheeks. ]

दिन का चेहरा हाथी के समान, रात्रि की कालिमा से आच्छादित होकर, पुनः साँझ के प्रकाश से रंग गया था, तथा उसके गालों पर तारों के मोती जैसे धब्बे पड़ गये थे।

5. [ निःसत्त्वेषु तमोन्धेषु रसनारसशालिषु ।

संकोचमाययुः पद्मामृतानां हृदयेष्विव ॥ ५ ॥

niḥsattveṣu tamondheṣu rasanārasaśāliṣu |
saṃkocamāyayuḥ padmāmṛtānāṃ hṛdayeṣviva || 5 ||

The busy buzz of Creation being silent in the dead darkness of night, like the humming of bees over the surface of the waters, the hearts of men were closed in sleep as in death, like the petals of the lotus at night. ]

सृष्टि की व्यस्त हलचल रात्रि के घोर अंधकार में शांत हो गई, जैसे जल की सतह पर मधुमक्खियां भिनभिना रही हों, मनुष्यों के हृदय मृत्यु के समान निद्रा में बंद हो गए, जैसे रात्रि में कमल की पंखुड़ियां।

6. [ मीलत्पक्षाः क्षणात्सुप्ताः कृच्छ्रप्रोच्छ्रितकन्धराः ।

कुलायेषु खगा आसञ्छवाङ्गेष्विव हेतयः ॥ ६ ॥

mīlatpakṣāḥ kṣaṇātsuptāḥ kṛcchraprocchritakandharāḥ |
kulāyeṣu khagā āsañchavāṅgeṣviva hetayaḥ || 6 ||

The birds lay with their folded wings and fallen crests in their nests, as the dead bodies were lying in the field, covered with their wounds and weapons. ]

पक्षी अपने पंखों को मोड़कर और गिरे हुए शिखाओं के साथ अपने घोंसलों में लेटे हुए थे, जैसे मृत शरीर अपने घावों और हथियारों से ढके हुए मैदान में पड़े थे।

7. [ आसन्नचन्द्रसुभगा लोकाः कुसुमपङ्क्तयः ।

उल्लसद्धृदया जाता वीरपक्षेष्विव श्रियः ॥ ७ ॥

āsannacandrasubhagā lokāḥ kusumapaṅktayaḥ |
ullasaddhṛdayā jātā vīrapakṣeṣviva śriyaḥ || 7 ||

Then the fair moonbeams shone above, and the white lotuses were blown below; the hearts of men were gladdened, and the victors felt joyous in themselves. ]

तब ऊपर सुन्दर चन्द्रमा की किरणें चमकने लगीं और नीचे श्वेत कमल खिलने लगे; मनुष्यों के हृदय प्रसन्न हो गए और विजेताओं ने अपने मन में हर्ष अनुभव किया।

8. [ रक्तवारिमयी सायमङ्गगुप्तशिलीमुखा ।

संकुचद्वक्त्रपद्माभूद्रणभूमिरिवाब्जिनी ॥ ८ ॥

raktavārimayī sāyamaṅgaguptaśilīmukhā |
saṃkucadvaktrapadmābhūdraṇabhūmirivābjinī || 8 ||

The ruddy evening assumed the shape of the blood-red sea of battle, and the fluttering bees now hid themselves like the faces of the fallen soldiers. ]

लालिमायुक्त संध्या ने युद्ध के रक्त-लाल समुद्र का रूप धारण कर लिया और फड़फड़ाती मधुमक्खियाँ अब गिरे हुए सैनिकों के चेहरों की तरह छिप गईं।

9. [ उपर्यभूद्व्योमसरस्ताराकुमुदमण्डितम् ।

अधस्त्वभूद्वारिसरः स्फुरत्कुमुदतारकम् ॥ ९ ॥

uparyabhūdvyomasarastārākumudamaṇḍitam |
adhastvabhūdvārisaraḥ sphuratkumudatārakam || 9 ||

There was an etherial lake above spangled with stars like the white lotuses on high; and here was the earthly lake below, beset by lotuses resembling the stars of heaven. ]

ऊपर आकाशीय झील थी, जो ऊपर के श्वेत कमलों के समान तारों से जगमगा रही थी; और नीचे पार्थिव झील थी, जो स्वर्ग के तारों के समान कमलों से घिरी हुई थी।

10. [ तमस्यपेतभीतानि भूतानि मिलितान्यलम् ।

पयांसीव विसेतूनि प्रसृतानि दिशं प्रति ॥ १० ॥

tamasyapetabhītāni bhūtāni militānyalam |
payāṃsīva visetūni prasṛtāni diśaṃ prati || 10 ||

The bodies that were thought to be lost in darkness, were now recovered in light, as the gems hid under the water, are found scattered about in moonlight. ]

जो शव अंधकार में खो गए समझे जाते थे, वे अब प्रकाश में मिल गए, जैसे जल के नीचे छिपे हुए रत्न चांदनी में बिखरे हुए मिल जाते हैं।

11. [ आसीद्रणाङ्गणं गायद्वेतालकुलसंकुलम् ।

क्वणत्कङ्कालकाङ्कस्थकङ्ककाकोलकेलिमत् ॥ ११ ॥

āsīdraṇāṅgaṇaṃ gāyadvetālakulasaṃkulam |
kvaṇatkaṅkālakāṅkasthakaṅkakākolakelimat || 11 ||

The battlefield was filled by the Vetala demons, howling with their hideous cry; while bodies of vultures, crows and owls, were tearing the carcasses and sporting with the skeletons. ]

युद्ध भूमि वेताल राक्षसों से भर गई थी, जो अपनी भयंकर चीख से चिल्ला रहे थे; गिद्ध, कौवे और उल्लू शवों को नोच रहे थे और कंकालों के साथ खेल रहे थे।

12. [ अथ काष्ठचिताज्वालसताराम्बरभास्वरम् ।

पचत्पचपचाशब्दिमेदोमांसमयानलम् ॥ १२ ॥

atha kāṣṭhacitājvālasatārāmbarabhāsvaram |
pacatpacapacāśabdimedomāṃsamayānalam || 12 ||

Then blazed the funeral piles as brightly as the starry frame on high, and the fire consumed the dead bodies together with their bones and raiments. ]

तब शवदाह गृह में ऊपर स्थित तारों की भाँति तेज चमक होने लगी और उस अग्नि ने मृत शरीरों को उनकी हड्डियों और वस्त्रों सहित भस्म कर दिया।

13. [ सर्वाङ्गास्थिस्फुटास्फोटस्फुटच्चितिचयोन्मुखम् ।

वेतालललनारब्धजललीलातिरोहितम् ॥ १३ ॥

sarvāṅgāsthisphuṭāsphoṭasphuṭacciticayonmukham |
vetālalalanārabdhajalalīlātirohitam || 13 ||

The fire burnt the bodies with their bones to ashes, after which it extinguished itself as if sated with plenty. The female fiends now began to sport in the water. ]

अग्नि ने हड्डियों सहित शरीरों को जलाकर राख कर दिया, जिसके बाद वह अपने आप बुझ गई, मानो वह बहुत तृप्त हो गई हो। अब राक्षसियाँ पानी में क्रीड़ा करने लगीं।

14. [ श्वकाकयक्षवेतालतालकोलाहलोल्बणम् ।

गमागमेन भूतानां समुड्डीनवनोपमम् ॥ १४ ॥

śvakākayakṣavetālatālakolāhalolbaṇam |
gamāgamena bhūtānāṃ samuḍḍīnavanopamam || 14 ||

There arose a mingled cry of dogs and crows, of Yakshas and Vetalas, with the clapping of their hands; and bodies of ghosts were moving about as woods and forests. ]

वहाँ कुत्तों और कौओं, यक्षों और वेतालों की तालियों के साथ मिश्रित चीख़ें गूंजने लगीं; और भूत-प्रेतों के शरीर वन और वन के रूप में विचरण करने लगे।

15. [ रक्तमांसवसामेदोहरणव्यग्रडाकिनि ।

चर्वितासृग्वसामांसस्रवत्सृक्किपिशाचकम् ॥ १५ ॥

raktamāṃsavasāmedoharaṇavyagraḍākini |
carvitāsṛgvasāmāṃsasravatsṛkkipiśācakam || 15 ||

The Dakinis (Dayinis) were eager to steal away the flesh and fat from the piles, and the Pisachas delighted in sucking the blood and the flesh and bones of the dead. ]

डाकिनी (दायिनी) गण ढेर से मांस और चर्बी चुराने के लिए उत्सुक थे, और पिशाच मृतकों का रक्त और मांस और हड्डियाँ चूसने में प्रसन्न होते थे।

16. [ मध्यमध्यचितालोकप्रकटासृक्शवव्रजम् ।

विरूपिकानीयमानस्वांसन्यस्तमहाशवम् ॥ १६ ॥

madhyamadhyacitālokaprakaṭāsṛkśavavrajam |
virūpikānīyamānasvāṃsanyastamahāśavam || 16 ||

The demons were now looking and now lurking about the funeral piles, and the Rakshasas that rushed in, bore away the carcasses on their shoulders. ]

राक्षस कभी शवों के ढेर को देख रहे थे और कभी उनके चारों ओर मंडरा रहे थे, और राक्षस दौड़कर शवों को अपने कंधों पर उठाकर ले जा रहे थे।

17. [ उत्ताण्डवोग्रकुम्भाण्डमण्डलोड्डामरोदरम् ।

छमिच्छमित्प्रलापान्तं मेदोसृग्वाष्पसाम्बुदम् ॥ १७ ॥

uttāṇḍavograkumbhāṇḍamaṇḍaloḍḍāmarodaram |
chamicchamitpralāpāntaṃ medosṛgvāṣpasāmbudam || 17 ||

There came also bodies of ferocious Kumbhandas, and big Damaras, uttering their barbarous cries of chumchum, and hovering over the fumes of fat and flesh in the shapes of clouds. ]

वहाँ क्रूर कुम्भनदों और बड़े-बड़े दमारों के शरीर भी आये , जो चमचम की बर्बर चीखें निकालते हुए बादलों के आकार में चर्बी और मांस के धुएं के ऊपर मँडरा रहे थे।

18. [ वहद्रक्तनदीरंहोरूढभूचररूपिकम् ।

वेतालकुलकङ्कालकर्षणाकुलकाकलम् ॥ १८ ॥

vahadraktanadīraṃhorūḍhabhūcararūpikam |
vetālakulakaṅkālakarṣaṇākulakākalam || 18 ||

Bodies of Vetalas stood in the streams of blood like earthly beings, and snatched the skeletons with hideous cries. ]

वेतालों के शरीर रक्त की धाराओं में पृथ्वी के प्राणियों की तरह खड़े थे, और भयंकर चीखों के साथ कंकालों को नोच रहे थे।

19. [ मृतेभोदरमञ्जूषासुप्तवेतालबालकम् ।

विविक्तैकरणोद्देशपानक्रीडास्थराक्षसम् ॥ १९ ॥

mṛtebhodaramañjūṣāsuptavetālabālakam |
viviktaikaraṇoddeśapānakrīḍāstharākṣasam || 19 ||

The Vetala younglings slept in the bellies and chests of the elephants, and the Rakshasas were drinking their fill in the bloody field.]

वेताल के बच्चे हाथियों के पेट और छाती में सो रहे थे और राक्षस रक्तरंजित मैदान में पेट भरकर पानी पी रहे थे।

20. [ मत्तवेतालकलहचितालातरणोज्ज्वलम् ।

वहद्रक्तवसामिश्रगन्धबन्धुरमारुतम् ॥ २० ॥

mattavetālakalahacitālātaraṇojjvalam |
vahadraktavasāmiśragandhabandhuramārutam || 20 ||

The giddy Vetalas fought with one another with the lighted faggots of the piles, and the winds were wafting the stench of the putrid carcasses on all sides. ]

चक्कर खा रहे वेताल जलती लकड़ियों को लेकर एक दूसरे से लड़ रहे थे और हवा से चारों ओर सड़ी लाशों की दुर्गंध फैल रही थी ।

21. [ रूपिकापेटिकावान्तारणद्रटरटारवम् ।

अर्धपक्वशवास्वादलुब्धयक्षोल्लसत्कलि ॥ २१ ॥

rūpikāpeṭikāvāntāraṇadraṭaraṭāravam |
ardhapakvaśavāsvādalubdhayakṣollasatkali || 21 ||

The female fiends (Rupikas), filled the baskets of their bellies with carrion, with a rat-a-tat (ratarata) noise; and the Yaksha cannibals were snatching the half-burnt carcasses from the funeral piles, as their roasted meat and dainty food. ]

रूपिकाएँ रत-अ-तट (रतराता) ध्वनि के साथ अपने पेट की टोकरियाँ सड़े हुए मांस से भर रही थीं; और यक्ष नरभक्षी श्मशान के ढेर से अधजले शवों को अपने भुने हुए मांस और स्वादिष्ट भोजन के रूप में उठा रहे थे (एस. काली अ. कुल)।

22. [ तुङ्गवङ्गकलिङ्गाङ्गतङ्गणाङ्गलगत्खगम् ।

तारापातोपमहसत्संमुखज्वालरूपिकम् ॥ २२ ॥

tuṅgavaṅgakaliṅgāṅgataṅgaṇāṅgalagatkhagam |
tārāpātopamahasatsaṃmukhajvālarūpikam || 22 ||

Aerial imps (khagas) attacked the dead bodies of the big Bangas and black Kalingas, and flouted about with their open mouths, emitting the blaze of falling meteors. ]

खग नामक हवाई राक्षस बड़े बंगा और काले कलिंगा के मृत शरीरों पर हमला करते थे और अपने खुले मुंह से गिरते उल्काओं की लपटें छोड़ते हुए इधर-उधर उड़ते थे।

23. [ पतद्वेतालसोल्लासमध्यस्थासृग्विरूपिकम् ।

पिशाचाकर्णिताभ्यर्णयोगिनीगणनायकम् ॥ २३ ॥

patadvetālasollāsamadhyasthāsṛgvirūpikam |
piśācākarṇitābhyarṇayoginīgaṇanāyakam || 23 ||

The Vetala goblins fell down in the dark and discoloured blood-pits, lying hid in the midst of the heaps of dead bodies; while the Pisacha ogres and the leaders of Yogini sprites, laughed at them for their false step. ]

वेताल राक्षस अंधेरे और बदरंग रक्त-गड्ढों में गिर गए, शवों के ढेर के बीच छिपे हुए थे; जबकि पिशाच राक्षस और योगिनी प्रेतों के नेता , उनके झूठे कदम (वेताल) के लिए उन पर हंस रहे थे ।

24. [ प्रसृतान्त्रमहातन्त्रीप्रायसंपन्नवादनम् ।

पिशाचवासनोत्क्रान्तपिशाचीभूतमानवम् ॥ २४ ॥

prasṛtāntramahātantrīprāyasaṃpannavādanam |
piśācavāsanotkrāntapiśācībhūtamānavam || 24 ||

The pulling of the entrails (antras-ants), vibrated as by striking the strings of wired instruments (tantras—or tants); and the ghosts of men that had become fiends from their fiendish desires, fell fighting with one another. ]

अंतड़ियों (अंतरों) को खींचने से ऐसा कंपन हुआ जैसे कि तारों वाले वाद्यों ( तंत्रों या तंतों) के तारों पर प्रहार किया गया हो; और उन मनुष्यों की आत्माएँ जो अपनी दुष्ट इच्छाओं से राक्षस बन गए थे, एक दूसरे से लड़ते हुए गिर पड़े।

25. [ रूपिकालोकनापूर्वत्रासार्धमृतसद्भटम् ।

क्वचिद्वेतालरक्षोभिरपरीपूर्णमद्रकम् ॥ २५ ॥

rūpikālokanāpūrvatrāsārdhamṛtasadbhaṭam |
kvacidvetālarakṣobhiraparīpūrṇamadrakam || 25 ||

Valiant soldiers were affrighted at the sight of the spectres (Rupikas); and the obsequies were disturbed by the Vetala and Rakshasa goblins. ]

वीर सैनिक रूपिकाओं को देखकर भयभीत हो गए; तथा वेताल और राक्षस पिशाचों के कारण अंतिम संस्कार में बाधा उत्पन्न हो गई ।

स्वरूपिकास्कन्धपतच्छवत्रस्तनिशाचरम् ।
नभःसंघट्टितापूर्वभूतपेटकसंकटम् ॥ २६ ॥

svarūpikāskandhapatacchavatrastaniśācaram |
nabhaḥsaṃghaṭṭitāpūrvabhūtapeṭakasaṃkaṭam || 26 ||

The hobgoblins of the night, (nisacharas), got frightened at the fall of the carcasses from the shoulders of the elves (Rupikas), who were carrying them aloft in the air; where they were waylaid by a throng of ghostly demons. ]

रात्रि के प्रेत (निसाचर) कल्पित बौनों (रूपिकाओं) के कंधों से शवों के गिरने से भयभीत हो गए, जो उन्हें हवा में ऊपर उठा रहे थे; जहां वे भूत-संकट राक्षसों के एक समूह द्वारा घेर लिए गए ।

27. [ अतिप्रयत्नापहृतम्रियमाणनरामिषम् ।

स्वभक्ष्यापेक्षपक्षेषु विक्षिप्तशवराशिवत् ॥ २७ ॥

atiprayatnāpahṛtamriyamāṇanarāmiṣam |
svabhakṣyāpekṣapakṣeṣu vikṣiptaśavarāśivat || 27 ||

Many dying bodies, that were lifted aloft with labour by the bogies (Danas), were let to fall down dead on the ground, being found unfit for their food. ]

बहुत से मरते हुए शरीर, जिन्हें दानवों ने परिश्रम से ऊपर उठाया था , मृत अवस्था में भूमि पर गिर पड़े, क्योंकि वे उनके भोजन के योग्य नहीं थे ।

28. [ शिवामुखानलशिखाखण्डोत्थमितिरक्तगैः ।

समुड्डीननवाशोकपुष्पगुच्छमिवाभितः ॥ २८ ॥

śivāmukhānalaśikhākhaṇḍotthamitiraktagaiḥ |
samuḍḍīnanavāśokapuṣpagucchamivābhitaḥ || 28 ||

Pieces of blood-red flesh, fallen from the fiery jaws of jackals, resembled clusters of asoka flowers, strewn all around the funeral ground. ]

सियारों के ज्वलंत जबड़ों से गिरे रक्त-लाल मांस के टुकड़े, अशोक के फूलों के गुच्छों के समान लग रहे थे, जो श्मशान भूमि के चारों ओर बिखरे हुए थे।

29. [ कबन्धकन्धराबन्धव्यग्रवेतालबालकम् ।

यक्षरक्षःपिशाचादिकचदाकाशगोल्मुकम् ॥ २९ ॥

kabandhakandharābandhavyagravetālabālakam |
yakṣarakṣaḥpiśācādikacadākāśagolmukam || 29 ||

Vetala urchins were busy in putting on the scattered heads over the headless bodies of kabandhas (acephali); and bodies of Yaksha, Raksha and Pisacha ogres, were flashing as firebrands in the sky.]

वेताल बालक क बन्धनों (अचर्मज्ञों) के सिरहीन शरीरों पर बिखरे हुए सिरों को लगाने में व्यस्त थे ; तथा यक्ष, राक्षस और पिशाच राक्षसों के शरीर आकाश में आग की लपटों के समान चमक रहे थे ।

30. [ आकाशभूधरनिकुञ्जगुहान्तरालपिण्डोपमण्डिततमोम्बुदपीठपूरम् ।

व्यालोलभूतरभसाकुलकल्पवातव्याधूतलोककरकाण्डकपेटकल्पम् ॥ ३० ॥

ākāśabhūdharanikuñjaguhāntarālapiṇḍopamaṇḍitatamombudapīṭhapūram |
vyālolabhūtarabhasākulakalpavātavyādhūtalokakarakāṇḍakapeṭakalpam || 30 ||

At last a thick cloud of darkness, covered the face or the sky, and the view of the hills and valleys, gardens and groves, was hid under an impenetrable gloom. The infernal spirits got loose from their dismal abodes, and ranged and ravaged at large over the field, as a hurricane under the vault of heaven. ]

अंत में अंधकार का एक घना बादल आकाश के ऊपर छा गया, और पहाड़ियों और घाटियों, बागों और उपवनों का दृश्य एक अभेद्य अंधकार में छिप गया। नरक की आत्माएँ अपने उदास निवासों से मुक्त हो गईं, और आकाश की छत के नीचे एक तूफान की तरह, मैदान पर फैल गईं और व्यापक रूप से तबाही मचाने लगीं।
