वसिष्ठ ने आगे कहा :—

1. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

एवमत्याकुले युद्धे सास्फोटभयसंकुले ।
आदित्ये तमसा वृद्धे चटत्कठिनकङ्कटे ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
evamatyākule yuddhe sāsphoṭabhayasaṃkule |
āditye tamasā vṛddhe caṭatkaṭhinakaṅkaṭe || 1 ||

Vasishtha continued:—Now as the war was waging fiercely, with mingled shouts on both sides, the sun shrouded his burnished armour under the mist of darkness, and was about to set. ]

अब जबकि युद्ध भयंकर रूप से चल रहा था और दोनों ओर से मिली-जुली चीखें उठ रही थीं, सूर्य ने अपने चमकते कवच को अंधकार के कोहरे में ढक लिया और अस्त होने वाला था।

2. [ वहत्यम्बूत्पतन्तीषु पतन्तीष्वश्मवृष्टिषु ।

नदीषु क्षेपणाच्छासु वरकेष्वब्जपङ्क्तिषु ॥ २ ॥

vahatyambūtpatantīṣu patantīṣvaśmavṛṣṭiṣu |
nadīṣu kṣepaṇācchāsu varakeṣvabjapaṅktiṣu || 2 ||

The waters of the limpid streams glided with the showers of stones flung by the forces, and falling on the fading clusters of lotuses growing in them. ]

स्वच्छ धाराओं का जल सेनाओं द्वारा फेंके गए पत्थरों की वर्षा के साथ बहता हुआ उनमें उग रहे मुरझाते हुए कमल के गुच्छों पर गिर रहा था।

3. [ मिथः फलाग्रकाटोत्थवह्निसीकरिणीषु च ।

आयान्तीषु प्रयान्तीषु दूरं शरनदीषु च ॥ ३ ॥

mithaḥ phalāgrakāṭotthavahnisīkariṇīṣu ca |
āyāntīṣu prayāntīṣu dūraṃ śaranadīṣu ca || 3 ||

Flashes of fire glittered in the sky, by the clashing of the shafts and darts below; and waves of arrows were seen, now approaching nigh and now receding at a distance. ]

नीचे बाणों और भालों की टक्कर से आकाश में आग की चमक चमक रही थी; और बाणों की लहरें दिखाई दे रही थीं, जो कभी निकट आती और कभी दूर हटती थीं।

4. [ वहल्लूनशिरःपद्मचक्रावर्तैस्तरङ्गितैः ।

खार्णवे पूरिते हेतिवृन्दमन्दाकिनीगणैः ॥ ४ ॥

vahallūnaśiraḥpadmacakrāvartaistaraṅgitaiḥ |
khārṇave pūrite hetivṛndamandākinīgaṇaiḥ || 4 ||

Severed heads like loose lotuses, floated and whirled in the whirlpools of blood below, and the sea of heaven was filled with flying weapons, moving as marine animals above.

नीचे रक्त के भँवरों में ढीले कमलों के समान कटे हुए सिर तैर रहे थे और चक्कर लगा रहे थे, और स्वर्ग का समुद्र ऊपर समुद्री जानवरों की तरह उड़ते हुए हथियारों से भरा हुआ था।

5. [ समीरणरणत्क्वाणशस्त्रपूर्णघनैर्घनैः ।

संदेहान्तेषु सिद्धेषु कपिकच्छव्यथाप्रदैः ॥ ५ ॥

samīraṇaraṇatkvāṇaśastrapūrṇaghanairghanaiḥ |
saṃdehānteṣu siddheṣu kapikacchavyathāpradaiḥ || 5 ||

The rustling of the breeze and the whistling of the overshadowing clouds of weapons, frightened the aerial Siddhas and sylvan apes, with the fear of an approaching rain. ]

हवा की सरसराहट और हथियारों के बादलों की सीटी की आवाज़ से आकाशीय सिद्ध और वनवासी वानरों को आने वाली वर्षा के भय से डर लगने लगा।

6. [ अष्टभागदशाशेषप्रतापमधुराकृति ।

शस्त्रघातौजसा वीर इवाहस्तनुतां ययौ ॥ ६ ॥

aṣṭabhāgadaśāśeṣapratāpamadhurākṛti |
śastraghātaujasā vīra ivāhastanutāṃ yayau || 6 ||

The day declined after it had run its course of the eight watches (Yamardhas), and assumed the graceful countenance of a hero, returning in glory, after he has fought his battle. ]

आठ प्रहर (यमरध) बीत जाने के बाद दिन ढलने लगा और उसने युद्ध करके गौरव के साथ लौट रहे वीर का मनोहर मुख धारण कर लिया।

7. [ श्रान्ताश्वेभाः प्रभग्नाश्च हेतिसंघातदीप्तयः ।

दिवसेन समं सेना ययुर्मन्दप्रतापताम् ॥ ७ ॥

śrāntāśvebhāḥ prabhagnāśca hetisaṃghātadīptayaḥ |
divasena samaṃ senā yayurmandapratāpatām || 7 ||

The army like the day, declined in splendour, being battered in its cavalry, and shattered in its force of elephants. ]

सेना का तेज दिन के समान क्षीण हो गया, उसके घुड़सवार सेना क्षत-विक्षत हो गई, और हाथियों का बल भी छिन्न-भिन्न हो गया।

8. [ अथसेनाधिनाथाभ्यां विचार्य सहमन्त्रिभिः ।

दूताः परस्परं वृत्ता युद्धं संह्रियतामिति ॥ ८ ॥

athasenādhināthābhyāṃ vicārya sahamantribhiḥ |
dūtāḥ parasparaṃ vṛttā yuddhaṃ saṃhriyatāmiti || 8 ||

Then the commanders of the armies, in concert with the ministers of war, sent envoys to the hostile parties for a truce to the fighting. ]

तब सेनापतियों ने युद्ध मंत्रियों के साथ मिलकर शत्रु पक्षों के पास युद्ध विराम हेतु दूत भेजे।

9. [ तत्र श्रमवशान्मन्दयन्त्रशस्त्रपराक्रमैः ।

रणसंहरणं काले सर्वैरेवोररीकृतम् ॥ ९ ॥

tatra śramavaśānmandayantraśastraparākramaiḥ |
raṇasaṃharaṇaṃ kāle sarvairevorarīkṛtam || 9 ||

Both parties agreed to the armistice, seeing how much they were harassed in the engagement; and the soldiers with one voice, gave their assent to it. ]

यह देखते हुए कि इस लड़ाई में उन्हें कितना कष्ट हुआ था, दोनों पक्ष युद्धविराम के लिए सहमत हो गए और सैनिकों ने एक स्वर से इस पर अपनी सहमति दे दी।

10. [ ततो महारथोत्तुङ्गकेतुप्रान्तकृतास्पदम् ।

बलयोरारुहोहैक एको योधो ध्रुवो यथा ॥ १० ॥

tato mahārathottuṅgaketuprāntakṛtāspadam |
balayorāruhohaika eko yodho dhruvo yathā || 10 ||

They hoisted their soaring banners of truce on the pinnacles of the highest chariots (rathas); and a crier on each side, mounted over one, to give proclamation to the armies below. ]

उन्होंने सबसे ऊंचे रथों के शिखरों पर युद्ध-संकट की ऊंची पताकाएं फहराईं ; तथा दोनों ओर एक-एक जयघोषक खड़ा किया, जो एक के ऊपर एक चढ़कर नीचे की सेनाओं को संदेश दे रहा था।

11. [ सोंऽशुकं भ्रामयामास सर्वदिङ्मण्डले सितम् ।

श्यामेव दीर्घशुद्धांशुं युद्धं संह्रियतामिति ॥ ११ ॥

soṃ'śukaṃ bhrāmayāmāsa sarvadiṅmaṇḍale sitam |
śyāmeva dīrghaśuddhāṃśuṃ yuddhaṃ saṃhriyatāmiti || 11 ||

They furled the white flags on all sides, which like so many moons in the gloom of night, proclaimed peace on earth by cessation from contention. ]

उन्होंने सब ओर श्वेत ध्वज फहरा दिए, जो रात्रि के अन्धकार में अनेक चन्द्रमाओं के समान पृथ्वी पर कलह-विराम द्वारा शान्ति की घोषणा कर रहे थे।

12. [ ततो दुन्दुभयो नेदुः प्रतिध्वनितदिङ्मुखाः ।

महाप्रलयसंशान्तौ पुष्करावर्तका इव ॥ १२ ॥

tato dundubhayo neduḥ pratidhvanitadiṅmukhāḥ |
mahāpralayasaṃśāntau puṣkarāvartakā iva || 12 ||

Then the drums sent their loud peals around, which were resounded by roarings of the clouds (Pushkaravartas) above and all about. ]

तब नगाड़े जोर से बजने लगे, जो ऊपर और चारों ओर के बादलों (पुष्करवर्तों) की गर्जना से गूंज उठे।

13. [ शरादिहेतिसरितो विस्तीर्णे गगने स्थिते ।

प्रवृत्ताः सुखमागन्तुं सरसः सरितो यथा ॥ १३ ॥

śarādihetisarito vistīrṇe gagane sthite |
pravṛttāḥ sukhamāgantuṃ sarasaḥ sarito yathā || 13 ||

The flights of arrows and weapons, that had been raging as fire in the atmosphere, now began to fall in torrents, like the currents of the lake Mansaravara on the ground below. ]

जो बाण और शस्त्र वायुमण्डल में अग्नि के समान प्रचण्ड हो रहे थे, वे अब नीचे पृथ्वी पर मानसरवर झील की धाराओं के समान प्रचण्ड रूप में गिरने लगे ।

14. [ योधदोर्द्रुमसंचारस्तनुतामाययौ शनैः ।

भूकम्पान्ते वनस्पन्द इवाभ्रान्त इवार्णवः ॥ १४ ॥

yodhadordrumasaṃcārastanutāmāyayau śanaiḥ |
bhūkampānte vanaspanda ivābhrānta ivārṇavaḥ || 14 ||

The hands and arms of the warriors were now at rest like their feet; as the shaking of trees and the surges of the sea are at an end after the earthquake is over. ]

अब योद्धाओं के हाथ और भुजाएँ उनके पैरों के समान विश्राम में थे; जैसे भूकंप समाप्त होने पर वृक्षों का हिलना और समुद्र की लहरें समाप्त हो जाती हैं।

15. [ विनिर्गन्तुं प्रववृते रणादथ बलद्वयम् ।

वारिपूरश्चतुर्दिक्षु प्रलयैकार्णवादिव ॥ १५ ॥

vinirgantuṃ pravavṛte raṇādatha baladvayam |
vāripūraścaturdikṣu pralayaikārṇavādiva || 15 ||

The two armies now went their own ways from the field of battle, as the arms of the sea run into the land in different directions. ]

अब दोनों सेनाएँ युद्ध के मैदान से अपने-अपने रास्ते चली गईं, क्योंकि समुद्र की भुजाएँ अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भूमि में चली गईं।

16. [ उत्क्षिप्तमन्दरक्षीरसमुद्रवदनाकुलम् ।

सैन्यं प्रशाम्यदावर्तं शनैः साम्यमुपाययौ ॥ १६ ॥

utkṣiptamandarakṣīrasamudravadanākulam |
sainyaṃ praśāmyadāvartaṃ śanaiḥ sāmyamupāyayau || 16 ||

The armies being at rest, there was an end of all agitation in the field; as the waves of the ocean are lulled to rest, on its calm after a storm. ] 

सेनाओं के विश्राम करने पर युद्धभूमि में सारा उपद्रव समाप्त हो गया; जैसे तूफान के बाद (शाब्दिक अर्थ: मंदार पर्वत द्वारा मंथन के बाद) समुद्र की लहरें शांत हो जाती हैं।

17. [ क्रमेणासीन्मुहूर्तेन विकटोदरभीषणम् ।

अगस्त्यपीतार्णववच्छून्यमेव रणाङ्गणम् ॥ १७ ॥

krameṇāsīnmuhūrtena vikaṭodarabhīṣaṇam |
agastyapītārṇavavacchūnyameva raṇāṅgaṇam || 17 ||

It became in an instant as dreadful as the dismal womb of death (Putana); and as deep and dark as the hollow pit of the sea, after its waters were sucked up by Agastya. ] 

वह क्षण भर में मृत्यु ( पूतना) के निराशाजनक गर्भ के समान भयानक हो गया ; और अगस्त्य (सूर्य) द्वारा उसका जल सोख लिए जाने के बाद समुद्र के खोखले गड्ढे के समान गहरा और अंधकारमय हो गया ।

18. [ शवसन्ततिसंपूर्णं वहद्रक्तनदाकुलम् ।

परिकूजनझङ्कारपूर्णझिल्लिवनोपमम् ॥ १८ ॥

śavasantatisaṃpūrṇaṃ vahadraktanadākulam |
parikūjanajhaṅkārapūrṇajhillivanopamam || 18 ||

It was full of the dead bodies of men and beasts, and flowed in floods of purpling blood; it was resonant with the sounds of insects, like a heath with the humming of beetles. ]

वह नदी मनुष्यों और पशुओं के मृत शरीरों से भरी हुई थी, और उसमें बैंगनी रक्त की धारा बह रही थी; वह कीड़ों की आवाजों से गूंज रही थी, जैसे भौरों के गुंजन से भरी हुई घास।

19. [ बहद्रक्तसरित्स्रोतस्तरङ्गारवघर्घरम् ।

साक्रन्दार्धमृताहूतसप्राणव्यग्रमानवम् ॥ १९ ॥

bahadraktasaritsrotastaraṅgāravaghargharam |
sākrandārdhamṛtāhūtasaprāṇavyagramānavam || 19 ||

The gory bodies were gushing with blood, and gurgling as the waves of the sea; and the cries of the wounded who wished to live, pierced the ears, and throbbed the heart strings of the living. ]

लहूलुहान शरीर खून से लथपथ थे और समुद्र की लहरों की तरह गुर्रा रहे थे; और जीवित रहने की इच्छा रखने वाले घायलों की चीखें कानों को चीर रही थीं, और जीवित लोगों के हृदय को धड़का रही थीं।

20. [ मृतार्धमृतदेहौघसृतासृक्प्लुतनिर्झरम् ।

सजीवनरपृष्ठस्थशवस्पन्दनभ्रान्तिदम् ॥ २० ॥

mṛtārdhamṛtadehaughasṛtāsṛkplutanirjharam |
sajīvanarapṛṣṭhasthaśavaspandanabhrāntidam || 20 ||

The dead and wounded weltering side by side in streams of blood, made the living think the dead as still alive like themselves. ]

मृत और घायल लोग खून की धाराओं में एक दूसरे के बगल में छटपटा रहे थे, जिससे जीवित लोगों को लग रहा था कि मृत लोग भी उनके जैसे जीवित हैं।

21 [ करीन्द्रशवराश्यग्रविश्रान्ताम्बुदखण्डकम् ।

विशीर्णरथसंघातं वातच्छिन्नमहावनम् ॥ २१ ॥

karīndraśavarāśyagraviśrāntāmbudakhaṇḍakam |
viśīrṇarathasaṃghātaṃ vātacchinnamahāvanam || 21 ||

Big elephants lying dead in piles in the field appeared as fragments of clouds, and the heaps of broken chariots seemed as a forest dispersed by the storm. ] 

खेतों में ढेरों मरे पड़े हुए बड़े-बड़े हाथी बादलों के टुकड़े जैसे प्रतीत होते थे और टूटे हुए रथों के ढेर आँधी से छिन्न-भिन्न हुए जंगल के समान प्रतीत होते थे।

22. [ वहद्रक्तनदीरंहःप्रोह्यमानहयद्विपम् ।

शरशक्त्यृष्टिमुसलगदाप्रासासिसंकुलम् ॥ २२ ॥

vahadraktanadīraṃhaḥprohyamānahayadvipam |
śaraśaktyṛṣṭimusalagadāprāsāsisaṃkulam || 22 ||

Streams of blood were running with the dead bodies of horses and elephants, and heaps of arrows and spears and mattocks and mallets, flowing together with broken swords and missiles. ]

घोड़ों और हाथियों की लाशों के साथ रक्त की धाराएँ बह रही थीं, और तीरों, भालों, कुदालों और हथौड़ों के ढेर, टूटी हुई तलवारों और प्रक्षेपास्त्रों के साथ बह रहे थे ।

23. [ पर्याणावनसंनाहकवचावृतभूतलम् ।

केतुचामरपट्टौघगुप्तं शवशरीरकम् ॥ २३ ॥

paryāṇāvanasaṃnāhakavacāvṛtabhūtalam |
ketucāmarapaṭṭaughaguptaṃ śavaśarīrakam || 23 ||

Horses were lying girt in their halters and harnesses, and the soldiers wrapt in their mails and armours; and flags and flappers and turbans and helmets lay scattered in the field.  

घोड़े अपनी लगामों और साज़ों में बंधे हुए पड़े थे, और सैनिक अपने कवच और कवच में लिपटे हुए थे; और झंडे, पगड़ियाँ, पगड़ियाँ और हेलमेट मैदान में बिखरे पड़े थे ।

24. [फणास्फुटकतूणीरकुञ्जकूजत्समीरणम् ।

शवराशिपलालौघतल्पसुप्तपिशाचकम् ॥ २४ ॥

phaṇāsphuṭakatūṇīrakuñjakūjatsamīraṇam |
śavarāśipalālaughatalpasuptapiśācakam || 24 ||

The winds were rustling in the orifice of the quivers, like the hissing of arrowy snakes, or as the whistling of the breeze in the holes of bamboo trees; and the Pisachas were rolling on beds of dead bodies, as upon their beddings of straws. 

हवाएँ तरकस के छिद्रों में सरसराहट कर रही थीं, जैसे बाणधारी साँप फुफकार रहे हों, या जैसे बाँस के वृक्षों के कोठरों में हवा की सीटी बज रही हो; और पिशाच लोग शवों के बिस्तरों पर, जैसे अपने पुआल के बिस्तरों पर लोट रहे हों।

25. [ मौलिहाराङ्गदद्योतशक्रचापवनावृतम् ।

श्वशृगालकराकृष्टसान्द्रान्त्रादीर्घरज्जुकम् ॥ २५ ॥

maulihārāṅgadadyotaśakracāpavanāvṛtam |
śvaśṛgālakarākṛṣṭasāndrāntrādīrgharajjukam || 25 ||

The gold chains of the helmets and the head ornaments of the fallen soldiers, glittered with the various colours of the rainbow, and greedy dogs and jackals were tearing the entrails of the dead like long ropes or strings. ]

शहीद सैनिकों के हेलमेट और सिर के आभूषणों की सोने की जंजीरें इंद्रधनुष के विभिन्न रंगों से चमक रही थीं और लालची कुत्ते और सियार मृतकों की अंतड़ियों को लंबी रस्सियों या डोरियों की तरह फाड़ रहे थे ।

26. [ रक्तक्षेत्रक्वणत्किंचिच्छेषजीवनृदन्तुरम् ।

रक्तकर्दमनिर्मग्नसजीवनरदर्दुरम् ॥ २६ ॥

raktakṣetrakvaṇatkiṃciccheṣajīvanṛdanturam |
raktakardamanirmagnasajīvanaradarduram || 26 ||

The wounded were gnashing their teeth in the field of blood, like the croaking of frogs in the miry pool of blood. 

घायल लोग रक्त के मैदान में अपने दाँत पीस रहे थे, जैसे रक्त के दलदल में मेंढक टर्राते हैं।

27. [ साक्रन्दवन्धुवलितं मृतार्धमृतमानवम् ।

शरायुधरथाश्वेभपर्याणासंवरान्तरम् ॥ २८ ॥

sākrandavandhuvalitaṃ mṛtārdhamṛtamānavam |
śarāyudharathāśvebhaparyāṇāsaṃvarāntaram || 28 ||

The friends of the dead and wounded, were wailing bitterly over their bodies; lying amidst the heaps of arrows and weapons, the broken cars and the scattered trappings of horses and elephants, which had covered the land.

जो लोग रंग-बिरंगे वस्त्र पहने हुए थे और जिन पर सौ धब्बे थे, उनकी भुजाओं और जाँघों से अब रक्त की सौ धाराएँ बह रही थीं ।

28. [ साक्रन्दवन्धुवलितं मृतार्धमृतमानवम् ।

शरायुधरथाश्वेभपर्याणासंवरान्तरम् ॥ २८ ॥

sākrandavandhuvalitaṃ mṛtārdhamṛtamānavam |
śarāyudharathāśvebhaparyāṇāsaṃvarāntaram || 28 ||

The friends of the dead and wounded, were wailing bitterly over their bodies; lying amidst the heaps of arrows and weapons, the broken cars and the scattered trappings of horses and elephants, which had covered the land. ] 

मृतकों और घायलों के मित्र उनके शवों पर फूट-फूट कर विलाप कर रहे थे; जो बाणों और शस्त्रों के ढेर, टूटे हुए रथों और घोड़ों और हाथियों के बिखरे हुए साज-सामान के बीच पड़े थे, जिनसे भूमि ढक गई थी।

29. [ नृत्यत्कबन्धदोर्दण्डमण्डलानमिताम्बरम् ।

मदमेदोवसागन्धपीडार्द्रघ्राणकोटरम् ॥ २९ ॥

nṛtyatkabandhadordaṇḍamaṇḍalānamitāmbaram |
madamedovasāgandhapīḍārdraghrāṇakoṭaram || 29 ||

Headless trunks of the goblins were dancing about with their uplifted arms touching the sky; and the stink of the carrion, fat and blood, filled the nostrils with nausea. ]

भूतों के सिरहीन धड़ अपनी उठी हुई भुजाओं के साथ आकाश को छूते हुए नाच रहे थे; और सड़े हुए मांस, चर्बी और रक्त की दुर्गन्ध से नथुने उबकाई से भर गए थे।

30. [  उत्ताल्वर्धमृतेभाश्ववार्यमाणाल्पजीवितम् ।

वहद्रक्तनदीवीचिप्रहारहतदुन्दुभि ॥ ३० ॥

uttālvardhamṛtebhāśvavāryamāṇālpajīvitam |
vahadraktanadīvīciprahārahatadundubhi || 30 ||

Elephants and horses of noble breed, lay dead and others gasping with their mouths gaping upwards; and the dashing of the waving streams of blood, beat as loud as drums against their rock-like bodies.

उत्तम नस्ल के हाथी और घोड़े मरे पड़े थे और अन्य लोग मुंह खोले हांफ रहे थे; और रक्त की लहराती धाराएं उनके चट्टान जैसे शरीरों पर नगाड़ों की तरह जोर से टकरा रही थीं।

31. [ उह्यमानमृतेभाश्वमकरासृक्सरिच्छतम् ।

म्रियमाणनरानीकफूत्कृतासृक्प्रणालिकम् ॥ ३१ ॥

uhyamānamṛtebhāśvamakarāsṛksaricchatam |
mriyamāṇanarānīkaphūtkṛtāsṛkpraṇālikam || 31 ||

The blood gushing out of the pores of the wounded horses and elephants, ran like that of a wounded whale into a hundred streams. And the blood spouting from the mouths of the dying soldiers flowed into a hundred channels. ]

घायल घोड़ों और हाथियों के रोमछिद्रों से बहता हुआ रक्त, घायल व्हेल के रक्त की तरह सौ धाराओं में बह गया। और मरते हुए सैनिकों के मुँह से बहता हुआ रक्त सौ नालियों में बह गया।

32. [ स्वल्पजीवशरापूर्णमुखदृक्कान्तितस्वनम् ।

पिण्डभार्यावसागन्धवातान्तोत्पीठलोहितम् ॥ ३२ ॥

svalpajīvaśarāpūrṇamukhadṛkkāntitasvanam |
piṇḍabhāryāvasāgandhavātāntotpīṭhalohitam || 32 ||

Those who were pierced with arrows in their eyes and mouths, were uttering an inaudible voice in their last gasp of death; and those pierced in their bellies, had their bowels gushing out with a horrible stench; while the ground was reddened with thickened blood issuing out of the wounds. ]

जिनके नेत्रों और मुखों में बाण लगे थे, वे अपनी मृत्यु के अंतिम श्वास में अस्पष्ट वाणी बोल रहे थे; और जिनके पेट में बाण लगे थे, उनकी आँतों से भयंकर दुर्गन्ध निकल रही थी; और घावों से बहते हुए गाढ़े रक्त से भूमि लाल हो गई थी।

33. [ उन्नासार्धमृतेभेन्द्रकराक्रान्तकबन्धकम् ।

निरधिष्ठितहस्त्यश्वपातितोच्चकबन्धकम् ॥ ३३ ॥

unnāsārdhamṛtebhendrakarākrāntakabandhakam |
niradhiṣṭhitahastyaśvapātitoccakabandhakam || 33 ||

Half dead elephants grasped the headless trunks with their uplifted trunks (proboscis), while the loose horses and elephants, that had lost their riders, were trampling over the dead bodies at random. ]

आधे मरे हुए हाथी अपनी उठी हुई सूंडों (सूंड) से सिरहीन धड़ों को पकड़ रहे थे, जबकि ढीले घोड़े और हाथी, जिनके सवार खो गए थे, बेतरतीब ढंग से मृत शरीरों को रौंद रहे थे।

34. [ रुदत्क्रन्दत्परिभ्रष्टशवक्षुब्धासृगुद्धति ।

मृतभर्तृगले शस्त्रत्यक्तप्राणकुलाङ्गनम् ॥ ३४ ॥

rudatkrandatparibhraṣṭaśavakṣubdhāsṛguddhati |
mṛtabhartṛgale śastratyaktaprāṇakulāṅganam || 34 ||

The weeping, crying and tottering wives of the fallen soldiers, fell upon their dead bodies weltering in blood, and embracing them fast by their necks, made an end of themselves with the same weapons. ]

रोती-बिलखती और लड़खड़ाती हुई पत्नियाँ, मारे गए सैनिकों के खून से लथपथ शवों पर गिर पड़ीं और उनकी गर्दन पकड़कर उन्हीं हथियारों से अपना प्राण त्याग दिया।

35. [ सेनोत्क्रान्तततक्षिप्रबहुपान्थपरीक्षणम् ।

शवहारकराकृष्टसप्राणानुचराकुलम् ॥ ३५ ॥

senotkrāntatatakṣiprabahupānthaparīkṣaṇam |
śavahārakarākṛṣṭasaprāṇānucarākulam || 35 ||

Bodies of soldiers were sent with their guides on the way, to fetch the dead bodies from the field; and the hands of their lively companions, were busily employed in dragging the dead. ]

सैनिकों के शवों को उनके मार्गदर्शकों के साथ मैदान से शवों को लाने के लिए भेजा गया; और उनके जीवंत साथियों के हाथ, मृतकों को खींचने में व्यस्त थे।

36. [ केशशैवालवक्राब्जचक्रावर्तनदीशतम् ।

तरत्तुङ्गतरङ्गाढ्यवहद्रक्तमहानदम् ॥ ३६ ॥

keśaśaivālavakrābjacakrāvartanadīśatam |
tarattuṅgataraṅgāḍhyavahadraktamahānadam || 36 ||

The field had become a wide river running with waves of blood, and breaking into a hundred whirling streams, carrying the severed heads, as lotuses swimming in them, and the torn braids of hair floating as bushes on them. ]

वह मैदान खून की लहरों से बहता हुआ एक विस्तृत नदी बन गया था, और सैकड़ों चक्करदार धाराओं में टूट गया था, जिसमें कटे हुए सिर, जैसे कमल तैर रहे हों, और उनके ऊपर झाड़ियों के रूप में तैरते हुए बालों की फटी हुई लटें थीं।

37. अङ्गलग्नायुधोद्धारव्यग्रार्धमृतमानवम् ।

विदेशमृतसाक्रन्दहुताङ्गगजवाजिनम् ॥ ३७ ॥

aṅgalagnāyudhoddhāravyagrārdhamṛtamānavam |
videśamṛtasākrandahutāṅgagajavājinam || 37 ||

Elephants and horses of noble breed, lay dead and others gasping with their mouths gaping upwards; and the dashing of the waving streams of blood, beat as loud as drums against their rock-like bodies.

लोग घायलों के शरीर से हथियार निकालने में व्यस्त थे, जो विदेशी भूमि में अपनी मृत्यु तथा युद्ध में अपने हथियार, कवच, घोड़े और हाथी खोने के कारण जोर-जोर से विलाप कर रहे थे।

38. [ प्राणान्तस्मृतपुत्रेष्टमातृदेवपराभिधम् ।

हाहाहीहीतिकथितमर्मच्छेदनवेदनम् ॥ ३८ ॥

prāṇāntasmṛtaputreṣṭamātṛdevaparābhidham |
hāhāhīhītikathitamarmacchedanavedanam || 38 ||

The dying souls remembered their sons and parents, their dear ones and their adored deities, and called out by their names; and began to sigh and sob with heart-rending heigh-hos and alacks. ]

मरते हुए जीव अपने पुत्रों, माता-पिता, प्रियजनों और आराध्य देवताओं को स्मरण करके उनके नाम पुकारने लगे और हृदय-विदारक आहें और हाय-हाय करने लगे।

39. [ म्रियमाणमथौजिष्ठद्विष्टप्रारब्धसंचयम् ।

दन्तियुद्धासमर्थाग्रमृतदेहेष्टदैवतम् ॥ ३९ ॥

mriyamāṇamathaujiṣṭhadviṣṭaprārabdhasaṃcayam |
dantiyuddhāsamarthāgramṛtadeheṣṭadaivatam || 39 ||

The brave that died cursed their fates, and those falling in their fighting with elephants, blamed the unkind gods they had adored in vain. ]

जो वीर मारे गए, वे अपने भाग्य को कोसने लगे और जो हाथियों के साथ युद्ध में मारे गए, उन्होंने उन निर्दयी देवताओं को दोषी ठहराया, जिनकी उन्होंने व्यर्थ ही पूजा की थी।

40. [ म्रियमाणमहावज्ञाशूराश्रितपलायनम् ।

अशङ्कितासृगावर्तभीमास्पदगमोत्सुकम् ॥ ४० ॥

mriyamāṇamahāvajñāśūrāśritapalāyanam |
aśaṅkitāsṛgāvartabhīmāspadagamotsukam || 40 ||

The cowards fearing to be killed betook themselves to base flight; but the dauntless brave stepped forward amidst the whirlpools of blood. ]

कायर लोग मारे जाने के भय से भागने लगे; किन्तु निर्भीक वीर रक्त के भँवरों के बीच से आगे बढ़े।

41. [ मर्मच्छेदशराघातव्यथाविदितदुष्कृति ।

कबन्धबन्धप्रारब्धवेतालवदनाक्रमम् ॥ ४१ ॥

marmacchedaśarāghātavyathāviditaduṣkṛti |
kabandhabandhaprārabdhavetālavadanākramam || 41 ||

Some suffering under the agony of arrows piercing their mortal parts, thought upon the sins of their past lives, that had brought this pain upon them; while the blood sucking Vetalas, advanced with their horrid mouths for drinking the blood of the headless trunks. ]

कुछ लोग अपने नश्वर अंगों में चुभते बाणों की पीड़ा से पीड़ित होकर अपने पिछले जन्मों के पापों पर विचार कर रहे थे, जिनके कारण उन्हें यह पीड़ा हुई थी; जबकि रक्त चूसने वाले वेताल अपने भयंकर मुंह से सिरहीन धड़ों ( कबंधों ) का रक्त पीने के लिए आगे बढ़ रहे थे ।

42. [ उह्यमानध्वजच्छत्रचारुचामरपङ्कजम् ।

किरत्संध्यारुणं दिक्षु तेजस्कं रक्तपङ्कजम् ॥ ४२ ॥

uhyamānadhvajacchatracārucāmarapaṅkajam |
kiratsaṃdhyāruṇaṃ dikṣu tejaskaṃ raktapaṅkajam || 42 ||

The floating flags and umbrellas and flappers, seemed as white lotuses in the lake of blood below, while the evening stretched her train of stars like red lotuses in the etherial sea above. ]

तैरती हुई ध्वजाएँ, छत्र और फड़फड़ाने वाले, नीचे रक्त के सरोवर में श्वेत कमलों के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे, जबकि संध्या ने अपने तारों की पंक्ति को ऊपर आकाशीय समुद्र में लाल कमलों के समान फैला रखा था।

43. [ रथचक्रधरावर्तं रक्तार्णवमिवाष्टमम् ।

पताकाफेनपुञ्जाढ्यं चारुचामरबुद्बुदम् ॥ ४३ ॥

rathacakradharāvartaṃ raktārṇavamivāṣṭamam |
patākāphenapuñjāḍhyaṃ cārucāmarabudbudam || 43 ||

The battle field presented the appearance of an eighth sea of blood;the rathas or warcars forming its rocks, and their wheels its whirlpools; the flags being its foam and froth, and the white flappers as its bubbles.]

युद्ध का मैदान रक्त के आठवें समुद्र जैसा प्रतीत होता था; रथ या योद्धा उसकी चट्टानें थे, और उनके पहिये उसके भँवर थे; ध्वज उसके झाग और झाग थे, और सफेद पंखुड़ियाँ उसके बुलबुले थे। (केवल अभिलेखों में ही सात समुद्र हैं)।

44. [ विपर्यस्तरथं भूमिपङ्कमग्नपुरोपमम् ।

उत्पातवातनिर्धूतद्रुमं वनमिवाततम् ॥ ४४ ॥

viparyastarathaṃ bhūmipaṅkamagnapuropamam |
utpātavātanirdhūtadrumaṃ vanamivātatam || 44 ||

The field of blood with the scattered cars, appeared as a track of land plunged in mud and mire, and covered over with woods broken down and blown away by a hurricane. ]

बिखरे हुए रथों सहित रक्त का वह मैदान कीचड़ और कीचड़ में डूबा हुआ भूमि का एक पथ प्रतीत हो रहा था, तथा तूफान से टूटे और उड़े हुए वनों से ढका हुआ था।

45. [ कल्पदग्धजगत्प्रख्यं मुनिपीतार्णवोपमम् ।

अतिवृष्टिहतं देशमिव प्रोज्झितमानवम् ॥ ४५ ॥

kalpadagdhajagatprakhyaṃ munipītārṇavopamam |
ativṛṣṭihataṃ deśamiva projjhitamānavam || 45 ||

It was as desolate as a country burnt down by a conflagration, and as the dry bed of the sea sucked up by the sage Agastya (the sun). It was as a district devastated by a sweeping flood. ]

यह ऐसा उजाड़ था जैसे आग में जलकर राख हो गया देश, और समुद्र का सूखा तल जिसे अगस्त्य ऋषि (सूर्य) ने सोख लिया हो। यह ऐसा था जैसे बाढ़ से तबाह हुआ जिला।

46. ​​[ कलापकुन्तवलितं भुशुण्डीमण्डलाकुलम् ।

मत्तनागशताकारशवतोमरमुद्गरम् ॥ ४६ ॥

kalāpakuntavalitaṃ bhuśuṇḍīmaṇḍalākulam |
mattanāgaśatākāraśavatomaramudgaram || 46 ||

It was filled with heaps of weapons, as high as the bodies of big elephants lying dead about the ground. ]

यह शस्त्रों के ढेरों से भरा हुआ था, जो जमीन पर मृत पड़े बड़े-बड़े हाथियों के शरीरों के समान ऊँचे थे।

47. [ शिलाशिखरसंजाततालजालमिवाततम् ।

तरद्रक्तनदीतीरजातकुन्तोन्नतद्रुमम् ॥ ४७ ॥

śilāśikharasaṃjātatālajālamivātatam |
taradraktanadītīrajātakuntonnatadrumam || 47 ||

The lances which were carried down by the streams of blood, were as big as the palm trees growing on the summits of mountains. ]

रक्त की धाराओं द्वारा बहाए गए भाले, पर्वतों की चोटियों पर उगने वाले ताड़ के वृक्षों के समान बड़े थे। (ओसियन की कविताओं में वर्णन की तुलना करें)।

48. [ नागांसस्यूतहेत्योघवृक्षांशुकुसुमाकुलम् ।

कङ्ककृष्टान्त्ररसनावृन्दजालकिताम्बरम् ॥ ४८ ॥

nāgāṃsasyūtahetyoghavṛkṣāṃśukusumākulam |
kaṅkakṛṣṭāntrarasanāvṛndajālakitāmbaram || 48 ||

The weapons sticking in the bodies of the elephants, seemed as the shining flowers growing on verdant trees: and the entrails torn and borne up by vultures, spread a fretted network in the sky. ]

हाथियों के शरीर में लगे हुए हथियार हरे वृक्षों पर उगे हुए चमकते हुए फूलों के समान प्रतीत होते थे और गिद्धों द्वारा फाड़ी और उठाई गई अंतड़ियाँ आकाश में झंझरीदार जाल फैला रही थीं।

49. [ असृक्सरित्तीरजातकुन्तोन्नतवनद्रुमम् ।

असृक्सरोवरोर्ध्वस्थपताकानलिनीगणम् ॥ ४९ ॥

asṛksarittīrajātakuntonnatavanadrumam |
asṛksarovarordhvasthapatākānalinīgaṇam || 49 ||

The lances fixed beside the streams of blood, were as a woody forest on the bank of a river; and the flags floating on the surface, appeared as a bush of lotuses in the liquid blood. ]

रक्त की धाराओं के पास स्थापित भाले नदी के तट पर एक वन के समान थे; और सतह पर तैरती हुई ध्वजाएँ तरल रक्त में कमल की झाड़ी के समान प्रतीत होती थीं ।

50. [ रक्तकर्दमनिर्मग्ननराहूतसुहृज्जनम् ।

करीन्द्रकुणपापातनिर्यद्भग्नजनेक्षितम् ॥ ५० ॥

raktakardamanirmagnanarāhūtasuhṛjjanam |
karīndrakuṇapāpātaniryadbhagnajanekṣitam || 50 ||

Dead bodies of men were drawn up by their friends, from the bloody pool in which they were drowned, and the embedded bodies of big elephants were marked by men by the jutting weapons sticking in them ]

मृत मनुष्यों के शवों को उनके मित्रों द्वारा उस रक्तरंजित तालाब से निकाला गया जिसमें वे डूबे हुए थे, और बड़े-बड़े हाथियों के शवों को मनुष्यों ने उनमें लगे हुए उभरे हुए हथियारों से चिन्हित किया।

51. [ हेतिलूनलतैर्वृक्षैः संदिग्धार्धकबन्धकम् ।

असृङ्गदीवहद्धस्तिकटकर्पटनौगणम् ॥ ५१ ॥

hetilūnalatairvṛkṣaiḥ saṃdigdhārdhakabandhakam |
asṛṅgadīvahaddhastikaṭakarpaṭanaugaṇam || 51 ||

The trunks of trees which had their branches lopped off by the weapons, appeared as the headless bodies of slain soldiers, and the floating carcasses of elephants seemed as so many boats swimming in the sea of blood. ]

शस्त्रों से कटी हुई शाखाओं वाले वृक्षों के तने, मारे गए सैनिकों के सिरविहीन शरीरों के समान प्रतीत होते थे, और हाथियों के तैरते हुए शव रक्त के समुद्र में तैरती हुई अनेक नौकाओं के समान प्रतीत होते थे।

52. [ रक्तस्रोतःस्फुरच्छुक्लवस्त्रडिण्डीरपिण्डकम् ।

संचारनियतक्षिप्रभृत्यविच्छिन्नमानवम् ॥ ५२ ॥

raktasrotaḥsphuracchuklavastraḍiṇḍīrapiṇḍakam |
saṃcāraniyatakṣiprabhṛtyavicchinnamānavam || 52 ||

The white garments that were swept down by the current, seemed as the froth of the pool of blood, and were picked up by the servants sent to search them out. ]

जो श्वेत वस्त्र धारा द्वारा बहाये गये थे, वे रक्त के तालाब के झाग के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे, और उन्हें खोजने के लिए भेजे गए सेवकों ने उन्हें उठा लिया।

53. [ इतश्चेतश्च निपतत्कबन्धरवदानवम् ।

ऊर्ध्वस्थूलाक्षचक्रौघच्छिन्नसैन्यद्रवज्जनम् ॥ ५३ ॥

itaścetaśca nipatatkabandharavadānavam |
ūrdhvasthūlākṣacakraughacchinnasainyadravajjanam || 53 ||

The demoniac bodies of headless soldiers, were rising and falling in the field, and hurling large wheels and disks upon the flying army on all sides. ] 

सिरविहीन सैनिकों के राक्षसी शरीर मैदान में उठते-गिरते थे और चारों ओर से उड़ती हुई सेना पर बड़े-बड़े चक्र और चक्र फेंक रहे थे।

54. [ रक्तनिःस्वनभाङ्कारफेत्कारार्धमृतारवम् ।

शिलामुखललद्रक्तधाराधूतरजःखगम् ॥ ५४ ॥

raktaniḥsvanabhāṅkāraphetkārārdhamṛtāravam |
śilāmukhalaladraktadhārādhūtarajaḥkhagam || 54 ||

The dying warriors were frothing forth floods of blood from their throats, and stones stained with blood were inviting the greedy vultures to devour them. ]

मरते हुए योद्धाओं के गले से खून की धारा बह रही थी और खून से सने पत्थर लालची गिद्धों को उन्हें खाने के लिए आमंत्रित कर रहे थे।

55. [ सुतालोत्तालवेतालतालताण्डवसंकटम् ।

पर्यस्तरथदार्वन्तरर्धान्तरितसद्भटम् ॥ ५५ ॥

sutālottālavetālatālatāṇḍavasaṃkaṭam |
paryastarathadārvantarardhāntaritasadbhaṭam || 55 ||

Then there were groups of Sutala, Vetala and Uttala demons dancing their war dance about the field, and whirling the rafts of the broken cars upon the flying soldiers on all sides. ]

 तत्पश्चात सुतल , वेताल और उत्तल राक्षसों के समूह युद्ध नृत्य करते हुए रणभूमि में आये और चारों ओर उड़ते हुए सैनिकों पर अपने टूटे हुए रथों के बेड़े घुमाने लगे ।

56. [ अन्तस्थसज्जीवभटस्पन्दिस्पन्दनभीतिदम् ।

रक्तकर्दमपूर्णास्यकिंचिज्जीवकृपाच्छवम् ॥ ५६ ॥

antasthasajjīvabhaṭaspandispandanabhītidam |
raktakardamapūrṇāsyakiṃcijjīvakṛpācchavam || 56 ||

The stir and last gasp of those that were yet alive, were fearful to behold, and the faces of the dying and the dead that were covered in dust and blood, were pitiful to the beholder.]

जो लोग अभी जीवित थे उनकी हलचल और अंतिम साँस देखना भयानक था, और मरते हुए और मृत लोगों के चेहरे जो धूल और खून से लथपथ थे, देखने वाले के लिए दयापूर्ण थे।

57. [ किंचिज्जीवनरोद्ग्रीवदुःखदृष्टश्ववायसम् ।

एकामिषोत्कक्रव्यादयुद्धकोलाहलाकुलम् ।
एकामिषार्थयुद्धेहामृतक्रव्यादसंकुलम् ॥ ५७ ॥

kiṃcijjīvanarodgrīvaduḥkhadṛṣṭaśvavāyasam |
ekāmiṣotkakravyādayuddhakolāhalākulam |
ekāmiṣārthayuddhehāmṛtakravyādasaṃkulam || 57 ||

The devouring dogs and ravenous ravens beheld the last gasp of the dying with pity; while the feeders on carrions were howling and fighting on their common carcass, till many of them became dead bodies by their mutual fighting. ]

भक्षक कुत्ते और भूखे कौवे मरते हुए लोगों की अंतिम साँसों को दया से देखते थे; जबकि सड़े हुए मांस खाने वाले पशु उनकी सामान्य लाशों पर चिल्लाते और लड़ते थे, यहाँ तक कि उनमें से बहुत से लोग आपसी लड़ाई में मृत हो जाते थे।

58. [ विवृत्तासंख्याश्वद्विरदपुरुषाधीश्वररथप्रकृत्तोष्ट्रग्रीवाप्रसृतरुधिरोद्गारसुसरित् ।

रणोद्यानं मृत्योस्तदभवदशुष्कायुधलतं सशैलं कल्पान्ते जगदिव विपर्यस्तमखिलम् ॥ ५८ ॥

vivṛttāsaṃkhyāśvadviradapuruṣādhīśvararathaprakṛttoṣṭragrīvāprasṛtarudhirodgārasusarit |

raṇodyānaṃ mṛtyostadabhavadaśuṣkāyudhalataṃ saśailaṃ kalpānte jagadiva viparyastamakhilam || 58 ||

Now I have described the sea of blood, which flowed fast with the gore of unnumbered hosts of horses, elephants and camels, and of warriors and their leaders, and multitudes of cars, and war chariots;but it became a pleasure garden to the god of death, delighting in his bed of bloodshed, and grove of the weapons beset all around. ]

अब मैंने रक्त के समुद्र का वर्णन किया है, जो असंख्य घोड़ों, हाथियों और ऊँटों, योद्धाओं और उनके सरदारों, रथों और युद्ध रथों के रक्त से तीव्र गति से बह रहा था; किन्तु वह मृत्यु के देवता के लिए एक आनन्द का उद्यान बन गया, जो अपने रक्तपात के बिस्तर में आनन्दित था, और चारों ओर से घिरे हथियारों का उद्यान था।
