वाल्मीकि ने कहा :—

1. [ श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।

वदत्येवं मनोमोहविनिवृत्तिकरं वचः ।

रामे राजीवपत्राक्षे तस्मिन्राजकुमारके ॥ १ ॥

śrīvālmīkiruvāca |

vadatyevaṃ manomohavinivṛttikaraṃ vacaḥ |

rāme rājīvapatrākṣe tasminrājakumārake || 1 ||

Valmiki said:—When the prince Rama (having his eyes resembling the petals of a lotus), had concluded his speech calculated to remove all ignorance from the mind. ]

जब राजकुमार राम ने (जिनकी आंखें कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान थीं) मन से सभी अज्ञान को दूर करने के लिए अपना भाषण समाप्त किया था।

2. [ सर्वे बभूवुस्तत्रस्था विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः ।

भिन्नाम्बरा देहरुहैर्गिरः श्रोतुमिवोद्धुरैः ॥ २ ॥

sarve babhūvustatrasthā vismayotphullalocanāḥ |
bhinnāmbarā deharuhairgiraḥ śrotumivoddhuraiḥ || 2 ||

All the men in the assembly had their eyes beaming forth with wonder, and the hairs on their bodies stood erect and pierced through their garments, as if wishing to hear the speech. ]

सभा में उपस्थित सभी पुरुषों की आंखें आश्चर्य से चमक रही थीं और उनके शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए थे तथा उनके वस्त्रों में छेद हो गया था, मानो वे भाषण सुनना चाहते हों।

3. [ विरागवासनापास्तसमस्तभववासनाः ।

मुहूर्तममृताम्भोधिवीचीविलुलिता इव ॥ ३ ॥

virāgavāsanāpāstasamastabhavavāsanāḥ |
muhūrtamamṛtāmbhodhivīcīvilulitā iva || 3 ||

The assembly seemed for a moment to have lost their worldly desires in their eagerness after a stoic indifference, and to be rolling in the sea of nectar. ]

सभा में उपस्थित लोगों को एक क्षण के लिए ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो उन्होंने उदासीन उदासीनता की लालसा में अपनी सांसारिक इच्छाएं खो दी हैं और वे अमृत के समुद्र में लोट रहे हैं।

4. [ ता गिरो रामभद्रस्य तस्य चित्रार्पितैरिव ।

संश्रुताः श्रृणुकैरन्तरानन्दपदपीवरैः ॥ ४ ॥

tā giro rāmabhadrasya tasya citrārpitairiva |
saṃśrutāḥ śrṛṇukairantarānandapadapīvaraiḥ || 4 ||

The audience remained (motionless) as the figures in a painting, being enraptured with internal delight at hearing the sweet words of the fortunate Rama. ]

भाग्यशाली राम के मधुर वचन सुनकर दर्शक आंतरिक आनंद से मंत्रमुग्ध होकर चित्र की आकृतियों के समान स्थिर खड़े रहे।

वसिष्ठविश्वामित्राद्यैर्मुनिभिः संसदि स्थितैः ।

जयन्तधृष्टिप्रमुखैर्मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रकोविदैः ॥ ५ ॥

vasiṣṭhaviśvāmitrādyairmunibhiḥ saṃsadi sthitaiḥ |

jayantadhṛṣṭipramukhairmantribhirmantrakovidaiḥ || 5 ||

There were Vasishtha and Viswamitra with other sages, and the prime minister Jayanta and other counsellors (of the king) then seated in that assembly. ]

 उस समय उस सभा में वसिष्ठ , विश्वामित्र, अन्य ऋषिगण, प्रधानमंत्री जयंत और अन्य सलाहकार बैठे थे ।

6. [ नृपैर्दशरथप्रख्यैः पौरैः पारशवादिभिः ।

सामन्तै राजपुत्रैश्च ब्राह्मणैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः ॥ ६ ॥

nṛpairdaśarathaprakhyaiḥ pauraiḥ pāraśavādibhiḥ |
sāmantai rājaputraiśca brāhmaṇairbrahmavādibhiḥ || 6 ||

There were also king Dasaratha and his subordinate rajas, with the citizens and foreign delegates, the chieftains and princes, together with Brahmans and men learned in the Vedas and divine knowledge. ]

वहाँ राजा दशरथ और उनके अधीनस्थ राजा , नागरिक और विदेशी प्रतिनिधि, सरदार और राजकुमार, साथ ही ब्राह्मण और वेद तथा दिव्य ज्ञान के ज्ञाता लोग भी थे।

7. [ तथा भृत्यैऽरमात्यैश्च पञ्जरस्थैश्च पक्षिभिः ।

क्रीडामृगैर्गतस्पन्दैस्तुरंगैस्त्यक्तचर्वणैः ॥ ७ ॥

tathā bhṛtyai'ramātyaiśca pañjarasthaiśca pakṣibhiḥ |
krīḍāmṛgairgataspandaisturaṃgaistyaktacarvaṇaiḥ || 7 ||

These accompanied by their friends and allies, with the birds in the cages and the royal antelopes and steeds of sport (about the palace), listened to Rama with fixed and mute attention ]

ये लोग अपने मित्रों और सहयोगियों के साथ, पिंजरों में बंद पक्षियों और महल के चारों ओर घूमने वाले राजसी मृगों और क्रीड़ा करने वाले घोड़ों के साथ, स्थिर और मौन ध्यान से राम की बातें सुन रहे थे।

8. [ कौसल्याप्रमुखैश्चैव निजवातायनस्थितैः ।

संशान्तभूषणारावैरस्पन्दैर्वनितागणैः ॥ ८ ॥

kausalyāpramukhaiścaiva nijavātāyanasthitaiḥ |
saṃśāntabhūṣaṇārāvairaspandairvanitāgaṇaiḥ || 8 ||

There were likewise the queen Kausalya and other ladies adorned with their best jewels, and seated at the windows, all mute and motionless. ]

वहाँ रानी कौशल्या तथा अन्य स्त्रियाँ भी अपने उत्तम आभूषणों से सुसज्जित होकर, खिड़कियों पर मौन तथा निश्चल बैठी थीं।

9. [ उद्यानवल्लीनिलयैर्विटङ्कनिलयैरपि ।

अक्षुब्धपक्षततिभिर्विहङ्गैर्विरतारवैः ॥ ९ ॥

udyānavallīnilayairviṭaṅkanilayairapi |
akṣubdhapakṣatatibhirvihaṅgairviratāravaiḥ || 9 ||

Besides these the birds on the trees and creepers of the princely pleasure garden, were listening to Rama without fluttering their wings or making any motion or sound.

इनके अतिरिक्त राजसी रमण उद्यान के वृक्षों और लताओं पर बैठे पक्षी भी बिना पंख फड़फड़ाये, बिना कोई हलचल या ध्वनि किये, राम की बातें सुन रहे थे।

10. [ सिद्धैर्नभश्चरैश्चैव तथा गन्धर्वकिन्नरैः ।

नारदव्यासपुलहप्रमुखैर्मुनिपुङ्गवैः ॥ १० ॥

siddhairnabhaścaraiścaiva tathā gandharvakinnaraiḥ |
nāradavyāsapulahapramukhairmunipuṅgavaiḥ || 10 ||

There were the Siddhas and aerial beings, and the tribes of Gandharvas and Kinnaras, together with Narada, Vyasa and Pulapa the chiefs of sages. ]

वहाँ सिद्ध और वायु प्राणी, गंधर्व और किन्नर जनजातियाँ थीं , साथ ही नारद , व्यास और पुलप नामक ऋषियों के प्रमुख (उस स्थान पर उपस्थित थे)।

11. [ अन्यैश्च देवदेवेशविद्याधरमहोरगैः ।

रामस्य ता विचित्रार्था महोदारा गिरः श्रुताः ॥ ११ ॥

anyaiśca devadeveśavidyādharamahoragaiḥ |
rāmasya tā vicitrārthā mahodārā giraḥ śrutāḥ || 11 ||

There were also some of the gods and chiefs of gods, Vidyadharas and the Nagas, who heard the speech of Rama which was full of meaning and clearness. ]

कुछ देवता तथा देवों के प्रमुख विद्याधर और नाग भी थे , जिन्होंने राम की वाणी सुनी, जो अर्थपूर्ण और स्पष्ट थी।

12. [ अथ तूष्णीं स्थितवति रामे राजीवलोचने ।

तस्मिन्रघुकुलाकाशशशाङ्के शशिसुन्दरे ॥ १२ ॥

atha tūṣṇīṃ sthitavati rāme rājīvalocane |
tasminraghukulākāśaśaśāṅke śaśisundare || 12 ||

As Rama whose eyes were beautiful as the lotus, whose face was as lovely as the moon, and who likened the nocturnal luminary in the atmosphere of Raghu's family, held his silence. ] 

जिनके नेत्र कमल के समान सुन्दर थे, जिनका मुख चन्द्रमा के समान मनोहर था, तथा जो रघुवंश के वातावरण में रात्रि के प्रकाश के समान थे , ऐसे राम ने मौन धारण कर लिया।

13. [ साधुवादगिरा सार्धं सिद्धसार्थसमीरिता ।

वितानकसमा व्योम्नः पौष्पी वृष्टिः पपात ह ॥ १३ ॥

sādhuvādagirā sārdhaṃ siddhasārthasamīritā |
vitānakasamā vyomnaḥ pauṣpī vṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha || 13 ||

Flowers were cast upon him from heaven in showers by the hands of the divine personages with their loud cheers and blessings. ]

दिव्य व्यक्तियों के हाथों से उनके ऊपर आकाश से पुष्पों की वर्षा हुई, तथा उनके जोरदार जयकारे और आशीर्वाद की वर्षा हुई।

14. [ मन्दारकोशविश्रान्तभ्रमरद्वन्द्वनादिनी ।

मधुरामोदसौन्दर्यमुदितोन्मदमानवा ॥ १४ ॥

mandārakośaviśrāntabhramaradvandvanādinī |
madhurāmodasaundaryamuditonmadamānavā || 14 ||

The people in the assembly were highly regaled with the sweet scent and beauty of these flowers of paradise fraught with humming bees in their cells. ]

सभा में उपस्थित लोग स्वर्ग के इन फूलों की मधुर सुगंध और सौंदर्य से बहुत प्रसन्न थे, तथा उनके कक्षों में भिनभिनाती मधुमक्खियाँ भी थीं।

15. [ व्योमवातविनुन्नेव तारकाणां परम्परा ।

पतितेव धरापीठे स्वर्गस्त्रीहसितच्छटा ॥ १५ ॥

vyomavātavinunneva tārakāṇāṃ paramparā |
patiteva dharāpīṭhe svargastrīhasitacchaṭā || 15 ||

These flowers when blown in the air by the breeze of heaven, appeared as they were clusters of stars, which after their fall brightened the ground with their beauty as with the beaming smiles of heavenly maids. ]

ये फूल जब स्वर्ग की हवा से हवा में उड़ाए गए, तो वे तारों के समूह के समान प्रतीत हुए, जो गिरने के बाद अपनी सुंदरता से धरती को स्वर्गीय दासियों की मुस्कुराहट के समान चमका रहे थे।

16. [ वृष्यमूककचन्मेघलवावलिरिव च्युता ।

हैयंगवीनपिण्डानामीरितेव परम्परा ॥ १६ ॥

vṛṣyamūkakacanmeghalavāvaliriva cyutā |
haiyaṃgavīnapiṇḍānāmīriteva paramparā || 16 ||

They appeared in the form of rain drops falling from the clouds, and blazing by the light of mute lightenings, and scattering about like balls of fresh butter. ]

वे बादलों से गिरती हुई वर्षा की बूंदों के रूप में प्रकट हुए, और मूक बिजली की रोशनी से चमकते हुए, और ताजे मक्खन की गेंदों की तरह बिखरते हुए।

17. [ हिमवृष्टिरिवोदारा मुक्ताहारचयोपमा ।

ऐन्दवी रश्मिमालेव क्षीरोर्मीणामिवाततिः ॥ १७ ॥

himavṛṣṭirivodārā muktāhāracayopamā |
aindavī raśmimāleva kṣīrormīṇāmivātatiḥ || 17 ||

They resembled also as particles of snow-balls, or as the grains of a necklace of pearls or as beams of moon-light, or as the little billows of the sea of milk, or like drops of ice-cream. ]

वे बर्फ के कणों के समान, या मोतियों की माला के दानों के समान, या चाँदनी की किरणों के समान, या दूध के समुद्र की छोटी-छोटी लहरों के समान, या आइसक्रीम की बूंदों के समान दिखते थे।

18. [ किञ्जल्काम्भोजवलिता भ्रमद्भृङ्गकदम्बका ।

सीत्कारगायदामोदिमधुरानिललोलिता ॥ १८ ॥

kiñjalkāmbhojavalitā bhramadbhṛṅgakadambakā |
sītkāragāyadāmodimadhurānilalolitā || 18 ||

There were also borne by the loose and sweet winds of heaven, some lotuses with long filaments, and attended by clusters of bees humming and flying about them. ]

स्वर्ग की मुक्त और मधुर हवाओं द्वारा उत्पन्न कुछ कमल भी थे, जिनमें लम्बे तंतु थे, और उनके चारों ओर भिनभिनाते और उड़ते हुए मधुमक्खियों के समूह थे।

19. [ प्रभ्रमत्केतकीव्यूहा प्रस्फुरत्कैरवोत्करा ।

प्रपतत्कुन्दवलया चलत्कुवलयालया ॥ १९ ॥

prabhramatketakīvyūhā prasphuratkairavotkarā |
prapatatkundavalayā calatkuvalayālayā || 19 ||

There were also to be seen heaps of ketaki and Kairava, Kunda and blue lotus flowers, falling and shining brightly among them. ] 

वहाँ केतकी , कैरव , कुंद और नीले कमल के फूलों के ढेर भी दिखाई दे रहे थे , जो उनके बीच गिर रहे थे और चमक रहे थे।

20. [ आपूरिताङ्गणरसा गृहाच्छादनचत्वरा ।

उद्ग्रीवपुरवास्तव्यनरनारीविलोकिता ॥ २० ॥

āpūritāṅgaṇarasā gṛhācchādanacatvarā |
udgrīvapuravāstavyanaranārīvilokitā || 20 ||

These flowers covered the court hall and the roofs of houses and their courtyards. The men and women in the city raised their heads to behold them falling. ]

इन फूलों ने दरबार हॉल, घरों की छतों और उनके आँगन को ढक लिया। शहर के पुरुष और महिलाएँ उन्हें गिरते हुए देखने के लिए अपने सिर ऊपर उठाती थीं।

21. [ निरभ्रोत्पलसंकाशव्योमवृष्टिरनाकुला ।

अदृष्टपूर्वा सर्वस्य जनस्य जनितस्मया ॥ २१ ॥

nirabhrotpalasaṃkāśavyomavṛṣṭiranākulā |
adṛṣṭapūrvā sarvasya janasya janitasmayā || 21 ||

The sky was quite unclouded when the flowers fell incessantly from above. A sight like this that was never seen before struck the people with wonder. ]

जब ऊपर से लगातार फूल गिर रहे थे, तब आकाश में बादल नहीं थे। ऐसा दृश्य जो पहले कभी नहीं देखा गया था, देखकर लोग आश्चर्यचकित हो गए।

22. [ अदृश्याम्बरसिद्धौघकरोत्करसमीरिता ।

सा मुहूर्तचतुर्भागं पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात ह ॥ २२ ॥

adṛśyāmbarasiddhaughakarotkarasamīritā |
sā muhūrtacaturbhāgaṃ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha || 22 ||

The shower of flowers fell for quarter of an hour, but the Siddhas from whose hands they fell were unseen all the while. ]

फूलों की वर्षा एक चौथाई घंटे तक होती रही, लेकिन जिन सिद्धों के हाथों से वे गिरे, वे इस दौरान अदृश्य रहे।

23. [ आपूरितसभालोके शान्ते कुसुमवर्षणे ।

इमं सिद्धगणालापं शुश्रुवुस्ते सभागताः ॥ २३ ॥

āpūritasabhāloke śānte kusumavarṣaṇe |
imaṃ siddhagaṇālāpaṃ śuśruvuste sabhāgatāḥ || 23 ||

The falling of the flowers having ceased after the assembly was covered with them, they heard the following words, coming to them from the divine personages in the sky. ] 

जब सभा पुष्पों से आच्छादित हो गई, तब पुष्पों का गिरना बन्द हो गया, और उन्होंने आकाश में दिव्य व्यक्तियों से निम्नलिखित शब्द सुने।

24. [ आकल्पं सिद्धसेनासु भ्रमद्भिरभितोदिवम् ।

अपूर्वमिदमस्माभिः श्रुतं श्रुतिरसायनम् ॥ २४ ॥

ākalpaṃ siddhasenāsu bhramadbhirabhitodivam |
apūrvamidamasmābhiḥ śrutaṃ śrutirasāyanam || 24 ||

"We have been travelling every where in whole bodies of the Siddhas from the beginning of creation; but never have we heard any where so sweet a speech as this. ]

"हम सृष्टि के आरम्भ से सिद्धों के सम्पूर्ण समूहों में सर्वत्र भ्रमण करते रहे हैं; किन्तु हमने कहीं भी ऐसी मधुर वाणी नहीं सुनी।

[ यदनेन किलोदारमुक्तं रघुकुलेन्दुना ।

वीतरागतया तद्धि वाक्पतेरप्यगोचरम् ॥ २५ ॥

yadanena kilodāramuktaṃ raghukulendunā |
vītarāgatayā taddhi vākpaterapyagocaram || 25 ||

"Such a magnanimous speech of indifference as has been just now spoken by Rama—the moon of Raghu's race, was never heard even by gods like ourselves. ]

" रघुवंश के चन्द्रमा राम ने अभी जो उदार वचन कहे हैं, वे हम जैसे देवताओं ने भी कभी नहीं सुने थे ।

26. [ अहो बत महत्पुण्यमद्यास्माभिरिदं श्रुतम् ।

वचो राममुखोद्भूतं महाह्लादकरं धियः ॥ २६ ॥

aho bata mahatpuṇyamadyāsmābhiridaṃ śrutam |
vaco rāmamukhodbhūtaṃ mahāhlādakaraṃ dhiyaḥ || 26 ||

"We account ourselves truly blessed to hear this highly charming and wondrous speech from the mouth of Rama himself to-day. ]

"आज स्वयं राम के मुख से यह अत्यंत मनोहर और अद्भुत वाणी सुनकर हम अपने को सचमुच धन्य मानते हैं।

27. [ उपशमामृतसुन्दरमादरा दधिगतोत्तमतापदमेष यत् ।

कथितवानुचितं रघुनन्दनः सपदि तेन वयं प्रतिबोधिताः ॥ २७ ॥

upaśamāmṛtasundaramādarā dadhigatottamatāpadameṣa yat |
kathitavānucitaṃ raghunandanaḥ sapadi tena vayaṃ pratibodhitāḥ || 27 ||

"Indeed we are awakened and edified by attending diligently to this truly excellent speech, delivered by Rama on the ambrosial bliss of asceticism, and leading to the highest felicity of men". ]

"निःसंदेह हम लोग इस उत्तम वाणी को ध्यानपूर्वक सुनकर जागृत और शिक्षित होते हैं, जो राम ने तप के अमृतमय आनन्द के विषय में कही है, तथा मनुष्यों को परम सुख की ओर ले जाती है।"
