वसिष्ठ ने कहा :—

1. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

इति संकथनं कृत्वा तस्यां निशि वराङ्गने ।
सुप्ते परिजने नूनमथान्तःपुरमण्डपे ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
iti saṃkathanaṃ kṛtvā tasyāṃ niśi varāṅgane |
supte parijane nūnamathāntaḥpuramaṇḍape || 1 ||

Vasishtha said:—After this conference between the goddess and that excellent lady on that night, they found the inmates of the family fast asleep in the inner apartment. ]

उस रात्रि को देवी और उस श्रेष्ठ महिला के बीच हुई इस वार्ता के पश्चात उन्होंने देखा कि परिवार के लोग भीतरी कक्ष में गहरी नींद में सो रहे हैं।

2. [ दृढाखिलार्गलद्वारगवाक्षे दक्षचेतसि ।

पुष्पप्रकरनिष्ठयूतमांसलामोदमन्थरे ॥ २ ॥

dṛḍhākhilārgaladvāragavākṣe dakṣacetasi |
puṣpaprakaraniṣṭhayūtamāṃsalāmodamanthare || 2 ||

They entered the charnel-house which was closely shut on all sides by latches fastened to the doors and windows, and which was perfumed with the fragrance of heaps of flowers. ]

वे श्मशान-गृह में दाखिल हुए, जो चारों ओर से दरवाजों और खिड़कियों पर लगी कुंडियों से बंद था , और जो फूलों के ढेरों की सुगंध से महक रहा था।

3. [ अम्लानमालावसनशवपार्श्वासनस्थिते ।

सकलामलपूर्णेन्दुवदनद्योतितास्पदे ॥ ३ ॥

amlānamālāvasanaśavapārśvāsanasthite |
sakalāmalapūrṇenduvadanadyotitāspade || 3 ||

They sat beside the corpse decorated with fresh flowers and garments, with their faces shining like the fair full-moon; and brightening the place. ]

वे ताजे फूलों और वस्त्रों से सजे हुए शव के पास बैठे थे, उनके चेहरे सुंदर पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा की तरह चमक रहे थे; और उन्होंने उस स्थान को उज्ज्वल कर दिया।

4. [ समाथिस्थानकं गत्वा तस्थतुर्निश्चलाङ्गिके ।

रत्नस्तम्भादिवोत्कीर्णे चित्रे भित्ताविवार्पिते ॥ ४ ॥

samāthisthānakaṃ gatvā tasthaturniścalāṅgike |
ratnastambhādivotkīrṇe citre bhittāvivārpite || 4 ||

They then went to the cemetery and stood motionless on the spot, as if they were sculptures engraven on marble columns, or as pictures drawn upon the wall. ]

फिर वे कब्रिस्तान में गए और वहीं पर निश्चल खड़े हो गए, मानो वे संगमरमर के स्तंभों पर उकेरी गई मूर्तियां हों, या दीवार पर खींचे गए चित्र हों।

5. [ सर्वास्तत्यजतुश्चिन्ताः संकोचं समुपागते ।

दिवसान्त इवाब्जिन्यौ प्रसृतामोदलेखिके ॥ ५ ॥

sarvāstatyajatuścintāḥ saṃkocaṃ samupāgate |
divasānta ivābjinyau prasṛtāmodalekhike || 5 ||

They shook off all their thoughts and cares, and became as contracted as the faded blossoms of the lotus at the decline of the day, when their fragrance has fled from them. ]

उन्होंने अपने सारे विचार और चिंताएं दूर कर दीं और ऐसे सिकुड़ गए जैसे दिन ढलने पर कमल के फूल मुरझा जाते हैं, जब उनकी सुगंध उनसे दूर हो जाती है।

6. [ बभूवतुर्भृशं शान्ते शुद्धे स्पन्दविवर्जिते ।

गिरौ शरदि निर्वात इव भ्रष्टाभ्रमालिके ॥ ६ ॥

babhūvaturbhṛśaṃ śānte śuddhe spandavivarjite |
girau śaradi nirvāta iva bhraṣṭābhramālike || 6 ||

They remained still, calm and quiet and without any motion of their limbs, like a sheet of clouds hanging on the mountain top in the calm of autumn. ]

वे शान्त, स्थिर और स्थिर रहे, उनके अंगों में कोई हलचल नहीं थी, जैसे शरद ऋतु की शांति में पर्वत शिखर पर बादलों की एक चादर लटक रही हो।

7. [ निर्विकल्पसमाधानाज्जहतुर्बाह्यसंविदम् ।

यथा कल्पलते कान्ते पूर्वमृत्वन्तरे रसम् ॥ ७ ॥

nirvikalpasamādhānājjahaturbāhyasaṃvidam |
yathā kalpalate kānte pūrvamṛtvantare rasam || 7 ||

They continued in fixed attention without any external sensation, like some lonely creepers shrivelled for want of the moisture of the season. ]

वे किसी भी बाह्य संवेदना के बिना एकाग्रचित्त बने रहे, जैसे कुछ एकाकी लताएँ ऋतु की नमी के अभाव में मुरझा गई हों।

8. [ अहं जगदिति भ्रान्तिदृश्यस्यादावनुद्भवः ।

यदा ताभ्यामवगतस्यवत्यन्ताभावनात्मकः ॥ ८ ॥

ahaṃ jagaditi bhrāntidṛśyasyādāvanudbhavaḥ |
yadā tābhyāmavagatasyavatyantābhāvanātmakaḥ || 8 ||

They were fully impressed with the disbelief of their own existence, and that of all other things in the world, and were altogether absorbed in the thought of an absolute privation of every thing at large.]

वे अपने और संसार की अन्य सभी वस्तुओं के अस्तित्व पर अविश्वास से पूरी तरह प्रभावित थे और प्रत्येक वस्तु के पूर्ण अभाव के विचार में पूरी तरह लीन थे।

9. [ तदा दृश्यपिशाचोऽयमलमस्तं गतो द्वयोः ।

असत्त्वादेव चास्माकं शशशृङ्गमिवानघ ॥ ९ ॥

tadā dṛśyapiśāco'yamalamastaṃ gato dvayoḥ |
asattvādeva cāsmākaṃ śaśaśṛṅgamivānagha || 9 ||

They lost the remembrance of the phantom of the phenomenal world, which is as unreal as the horn of a hare. ]

उन्होंने भौतिक जगत के प्रेत की स्मृति खो दी, जो खरगोश के सींग के समान मिथ्या है।

10. [ आदावेव हि यन्नास्ति वर्तमानेऽपि तत्तथा ।

भातं वाऽभातमेवातो मृगतृष्णाम्बुवज्जगत् ॥ १० ॥

ādāveva hi yannāsti vartamāne'pi tattathā |
bhātaṃ vā'bhātamevāto mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvajjagat || 10 ||

What was a non ens at first, is even so a not-being at present, and what appears as existent, is as inexistent as the water in a mirage. ]

जो पहले असार था , वह वर्तमान में भी असार है, और जो अस्तित्वमान प्रतीत होता है, वह मृगतृष्णा में जल के समान असार है।

11. [ स्वभावकेवलं शान्तं स्त्रीद्वयं तद्बभूव ह ।

चन्द्रार्कादिपदार्थौघैर्दूरमुक्तमिवाम्बरम् ॥ ११ ॥

svabhāvakevalaṃ śāntaṃ strīdvayaṃ tadbabhūva ha |
candrārkādipadārthaughairdūramuktamivāmbaram || 11 ||

The two ladies then became as quiet as inert nature herself, and as still as firmament before the luminous bodies rolled about in its ample sphere. ]

तब वे दोनों देवियाँ जड़ प्रकृति के समान शान्त हो गईं, तथा आकाश के समान निश्चल हो गईं, जब उन ज्योतिर्मय पिंडों ने उसके विशाल क्षेत्र में विचरण किया।

12. [ तेनैव ज्ञानदेहेन चचार ज्ञप्तिदेवता ।

मानुषी त्वितरेणाशु ध्यानज्ञानानुरूपिणा ॥ १२ ॥

tenaiva jñānadehena cacāra jñaptidevatā |
mānuṣī tvitareṇāśu dhyānajñānānurūpiṇā || 12 ||

They then began to move with their own bodies, the goddess of wisdom in her form of intelligence, and the queen in her intellectual and meditative mood. ]

फिर वे अपने-अपने शरीरों से चलने लगे, ज्ञान की देवी अपनी बुद्धि के रूप में, और रानी अपनी बौद्धिक और ध्यान मुद्रा में।

13. [ गेहान्तरेव प्रादेशमात्रमारुह्य संविदा ।

बभूवतुश्चिदाकाशरूपिण्यौ व्योमगाकृती ॥ १३ ॥

gehāntareva prādeśamātramāruhya saṃvidā |
babhūvatuścidākāśarūpiṇyau vyomagākṛtī || 13 ||

With their new bodies they rose as high as one span above the ground, then taking the forms of the empty intellect, they began to mount in the sky. ]

अपने नये शरीर के साथ वे जमीन से एक हाथ ऊपर उठ गये, फिर शून्य बुद्धि का रूप धारण करके वे आकाश में चढ़ने लगे।

14. [ अथ ते ललने लीलालोले ललितलोचने ।

स्वभावाच्चेत्यसंवित्तेर्नभो दूरमितो गते ॥ १४ ॥

atha te lalane līlālole lalitalocane |
svabhāvāccetyasaṃvitternabho dūramito gate || 14 ||

The two ladies then with their playful open eyes, ascended to the higher region of the sky, by their nature of intellectual knowledge. ]

तब वे दोनों देवियाँ अपने चंचल खुले नेत्रों से अपने स्वभावगत बौद्धिक ज्ञान के बल पर आकाश के उच्चतर क्षेत्र में चढ़ गईं।

15. [ तत्रस्थे वाथ चिद्वृत्त्या पुप्लुवाते नभस्थलम् ।

कोटियोजनविस्तीर्णं दूराद्दूरतरान्तरम् ॥ १५ ॥

tatrasthe vātha cidvṛttyā pupluvāte nabhasthalam |
koṭiyojanavistīrṇaṃ dūrāddūratarāntaram || 15 ||

Then they flew higher and higher by force of their intellect, and arrived at a region stretching millions of leagues in length. ]

फिर वे अपनी बुद्धि के बल पर ऊपर-ऊपर उड़ते गए और लाखों लीग लंबाई वाले क्षेत्र में पहुँच गए।

16. [ दृश्यानुसन्धाननिजस्वभावादाकाशदेहे अपि ते मिथोऽत्र ।

परस्पराकारविलोकनेन बभूवतुः स्नेहपरे वयस्ये ॥ १६ ॥

dṛśyānusandhānanijasvabhāvādākāśadehe api te mitho'tra |
parasparākāravilokanena babhūvatuḥ snehapare vayasye || 16 ||

Here the pair in their etherial forms, looked about according to their nature in search of some visible objects; but finding no other figure except their own, they became much more attached to each other by their mutual affection. ]

यहाँ वे दोनों अपने-अपने आकाशीय रूपों में अपने-अपने स्वभाव के अनुसार कुछ दृश्यमान वस्तुओं की खोज में इधर-उधर देखने लगे; किन्तु अपने अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य आकृति न पाकर वे परस्पर स्नेह के कारण एक-दूसरे से बहुत अधिक आसक्त हो गए।
