राम ने कहा :—

1. [श्रीराम उवाच ।

एवं संकथयन्तीषु तासु तस्मिन्गृहोदरे ।

विदूरथः किमकरोन्निर्गत्य कुपितो गृहात् ॥ १ ॥

śrīrāma uvāca |

evaṃ saṃkathayantīṣu tāsu tasmingṛhodare | vidūrathaḥ kimakaronnirgatya kupito gṛhāt || 1 ||

Rama said:—Relate to me the acts of Viduratha, after he went out enraged from the camp, and left the ladies and the goddess talking in that manner.

 विदूरथ के कृत्य मुझे बताओ , जब वह क्रोधित होकर शिविर से बाहर चला गया और स्त्रियों तथा देवी को उसी प्रकार बातें करते हुए छोड़ दिया।

वसिष्ठ ने कहा :—

2. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

विदूरथः स्वसदनान्निर्गतः परिवारितः ।

परिवारेण महता ऋक्षौघेणेव चन्द्रमाः ॥ २ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |

vidūrathaḥ svasadanānnirgataḥ parivāritaḥ |parivāreṇa mahatā ṛkṣaugheṇeva candramāḥ || 2 ||

Vasishtha said:—Viduratha left his camp in company with a large body of his companions like the bright moon beset by a host of stars. ]

विदूरथ अपने साथियों के एक विशाल समूह के साथ अपने शिविर से ऐसे निकला जैसे तारों के समूह से घिरा हुआ उज्ज्वल चंद्रमा।

3. [ सन्नद्धसर्वावयवो लग्नहारविभूषणः ।

महाजयजयारावैः सुरेन्द्र इव निर्गतः ॥ ३ ॥

sannaddhasarvāvayavo lagnahāravibhūṣaṇaḥ |

mahājayajayārāvaiḥ surendra iva nirgataḥ || 3 ||

He was in armour and girt by laces and girdles, and thus attired in his martial habit, he went forth amidst the loud war cry of vae victis, like the god Indra going to battle. ] 

वह कवच पहने हुए था और फीतों और कमरबंदों से बंधा हुआ था, और इस प्रकार अपने युद्ध के वेश में सजकर, वह 'वे विक्टिस' के ऊंचे युद्धघोष के बीच आगे बढ़ रहा था , जैसे युद्ध में जाते हुए देवता इंद्र ।

4. [ समादिशन्योधगणं शृण्वन्मण्डलसंस्थितिम् ।

आलोकयन्वीरगणानारुरोह नृपो रथम् ॥ ४ ॥

samādiśanyodhagaṇaṃ śṛṇvanmaṇḍalasaṃsthitim |
ālokayanvīragaṇānāruroha nṛpo ratham || 4 ||

He gave orders to the soldiers and was informed of the battle array; and having given directions to his captains, he mounted his chariot.]

उसने सैनिकों को आदेश दिया और युद्ध की व्यूह रचना की जानकारी ली; और अपने सेनापतियों को निर्देश देकर वह अपने रथ पर सवार हुआ।

5. [ कूटाकारसमाकारं मुक्तामाणिक्यमण्डितम् ।

पताकापञ्चभिर्व्याप्तं द्युविमानमिवोत्तमम् ॥ ५ ॥

kūṭākārasamākāraṃ muktāmāṇikyamaṇḍitam |

patākāpañcabhirvyāptaṃ dyuvimānamivottamam || 5 ||

It was adorned with mountings resembling the pinnacles of mountains and beset by five flags fringed with strings of pearls and gems, resembling a celestial car.

यह पर्वत शिखरों के समान पर्वतों से सुशोभित था और मोतियों और रत्नों की लड़ियों से युक्त पाँच ध्वजों से घिरा हुआ था, जो दिव्य रथ के समान थे।

6. [ चक्रभित्तिपरिप्रोतप्रकचत्काञ्चनाङ्कुरम् ।

मुक्ताजालरणत्कारचारुविक्रमकूबरम् ॥ ६ ॥

cakrabhittipariprotaprakacatkāñcanāṅkuram |

muktājālaraṇatkāracāruvikramakūbaram || 6 ||

The iron hoops of its wheels flashed with their golden pegs, and the long and beautiful shaft of the car, rang with the tinkling of pearls which were suspended to it.]

उसके पहियों के लोहे के छल्ले अपनी सुनहरी खूंटियों से चमकते थे, और रथ का लंबा और सुंदर शाफ्ट, उसमें लटके मोतियों की खनक से गूंजता था।

7. [ सुग्रीवैर्लक्षणोपेतैः प्रशस्तैः प्रचलैः कृशैः ।

जवोड्डयनवेगेन प्रवहद्भिः सुरानिव ॥ ७ ॥

sugrīvairlakṣaṇopetaiḥ praśastaiḥ pracalaiḥ kṛśaiḥ |

javoḍḍayanavegena pravahadbhiḥ surāniva || 7 ||

It was drawn by long necked, swift and slender horses of the best breed and auspicious marks; that seemed to fly in the air by their swiftness and bearing aloft a heavenly car with some god in it. ]

इसे लंबी गर्दन वाले, उत्तम नस्ल और शुभ चिह्नों वाले तेज और पतले घोड़ों द्वारा खींचा जा रहा था; जो अपनी तेजी से हवा में उड़ते हुए और किसी देवता से युक्त दिव्य रथ को ऊपर उठाए हुए प्रतीत होते थे।

8. [ वायुं जवेन सहसा असहद्भिर्गतिक्रमैः ।

प्रोह्यद्भिरिव पश्चार्धमापिबद्भिरिवाम्बरम् ॥ ८ ॥

vāyuṃ javena sahasā asahadbhirgatikramaiḥ |

prohyadbhiriva paścārdhamāpibadbhirivāmbaram || 8 ||

Being impatient of the swiftness of the winds, they spurred them with their hinder heels and left them behind, and sped the forepart of their bodies as if to devour the air, impeding their course. ]

हवाओं के वेग से अधीर होकर, उन्होंने अपनी पिछली एड़ियों से उन्हें धकेला और उन्हें पीछे छोड़ दिया, और अपने शरीर के अगले भाग को इस तरह से तेज किया मानो हवा को निगलना चाहते हों, जिससे उनका मार्ग बाधित हो गया।

9. [ योजितैरिव संपूर्णैश्चन्द्रैश्चामरदीप्तिभिः ।

अश्वैरष्टभिराबद्धमाशापूरकहेषितैः ॥ ९ ॥

yojitairiva saṃpūrṇaiścandraiścāmaradīptibhiḥ |

aśvairaṣṭabhirābaddhamāśāpūrakaheṣitaiḥ || 9 ||

The car was drawn by eight coursers with their manes hanging down their necks like flappers, and white spots or circlets resembling the disks of moon on their foreheads, and filling the eight sides around with their hoarse neighing. ]

रथ को आठ घोडे खींच रहे थे, जिनके अयाल उनकी गर्दनों से फड़फड़ाने वाले पंखों की तरह लटक रहे थे, और उनके माथे पर चंद्रमा के चक्रों के समान सफेद धब्बे या चक्र थे, और वे चारों ओर की आठ भुजाओं को अपनी कर्कश हिनहिनाहट से भर रहे थे।

10. [ अथोदपतदुद्दामनागाभ्ररवनिर्भरः ।

शैलभित्तिप्रतिध्वानदारुणो दुन्दुभिध्वनिः ॥ १० ॥

athodapataduddāmanāgābhraravanirbharaḥ |śailabhittipratidhvānadāruṇo dundubhidhvaniḥ || 10 ||

At this time there rose a loud noise of the elephants, resounding like drums from the hollows of the distant hills. ]

उस समय हाथियों का बड़ा भयंकर शब्द हुआ, जो दूर की पहाड़ियों की खोखलों से नगाड़ों की तरह गूंज रहा था।

11. [ मत्तसैनिकनिर्मुक्तैर्व्याप्तं कलकलारवैः ।

किंकिणीजालनिर्ध्वानैर्हेतिसंघट्टघट्टितैः ॥ ११ ॥

mattasainikanirmuktairvyāptaṃ kalakalāravaiḥ |

kiṃkiṇījālanirdhvānairhetisaṃghaṭṭaghaṭṭitaiḥ || 11 ||

Loud clamours (kala-kalas) were raised by the infuriate soldiers, and the tinkling of their belted trinkets (kinkini), and clashing of their weapons, rang afar in the open air. ]

क्रोधित सैनिकों ने जोर से कोलाहल मचाया ( काल - काल ) और उनकी बेल्ट वाले गहनों ( किंकिनी ) की झनकार और उनके हथियारों की टकराहट दूर तक खुली हवा में गूंज उठी।

12. [ धनुश्चटचटाशब्दैः शरसीत्कारगायनैः ।

परस्पराङ्गनिष्पिष्टकवचौघझणज्झणैः ॥ १२ ॥

dhanuścaṭacaṭāśabdaiḥ śarasītkāragāyanaiḥ |

parasparāṅganiṣpiṣṭakavacaughajhaṇajjhaṇaiḥ || 12 ||

The crackling (chatachata) of the bows, and the wheezing (shitkara) of the arrows, joined with the jangle (jhanjhana) of armours, by their clashing against one another, raised a confused hubbub all around. ]

धनुषों की चटाचटा और बाणों की घरघराहट, कवचों की झनझनाहट के साथ मिलकर, एक दूसरे से टकराने से चारों ओर भ्रांतिपूर्ण कोलाहल मच गया ।

13. [ ज्वलदग्निटणत्कारैरार्तिमत्क्रन्दनारवैः ।

परस्परभटाह्वानैर्बन्दिविक्षुब्धरोदनैः ॥ १३ ॥

jvaladagniṭaṇatkārairārtimatkrandanāravaiḥ |

parasparabhaṭāhvānairbandivikṣubdharodanaiḥ || 13 ||

The sparkling (kanatkara) of blazing fire, and the mutual challenge of the champions; the painful shrieks of the wounded and the piteous cry of captives, were seen and heard on all sides. ]

प्रज्वलित अग्नि की चमक (कण्टकार) और योद्धाओं की परस्पर ललकार; घायलों की पीड़ादायक चीखें और बंदियों का करुण क्रंदन, सब ओर से दिखाई और सुनाई दे रहा था।

14. [ शिलाघनीकृताशेषब्रह्माण्डकुहरो ध्वनिः ।

हस्तग्राह्योऽभवद्भीमो दशाशाकुञ्जपूरकः ॥ १४ ॥

śilāghanīkṛtāśeṣabrahmāṇḍakuharo dhvaniḥ |hastagrāhyo'bhavadbhīmo daśāśākuñjapūrakaḥ || 14 ||

The mingled sounds thickened in the air, and filled its cavity and its sides as with solid stones and capable of being clutched in the hands. ]

मिश्रित ध्वनियाँ हवा में घनी हो गईं, और उसकी गुहा और उसके किनारों को ऐसे ठोस पत्थरों से भर दिया जैसे कि उन्हें हाथों में पकड़ा जा सके।

15. [ अथोदपतदादित्यपथपीवररोधकम् ।

रजोनिभेन भूपीठमम्बरोड्डयनोन्मुखम् ॥ १५ ॥

athodapatadādityapathapīvararodhakam|rajonibhena bhūpīṭhamambaroḍḍayanonmukham || 15 ||

Clouds of dust flew as fast and thick into the air, that they seemed to be the crust or strata of the earth, rising upward to block the path of the sun in the sky. ]

धूल के बादल इतनी तेजी से और घने होकर हवा में उड़ रहे थे कि ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे वे धरती की पपड़ी या परतें हों, जो आकाश में सूर्य का मार्ग अवरुद्ध करने के लिए ऊपर की ओर उठ रही हों।

16. [ गर्भवासमिवापन्नं तेनासीत्तन्महापुरम् ।

मूढत्वं यौवनेनेव घनतामाययौ तमः ॥ १६ ॥

garbhavāsamivāpannaṃ tenāsīttanmahāpuram |

mūḍhatvaṃ yauvaneneva ghanatāmāyayau tamaḥ || 16 ||

The great city was hid in the dark womb of the overspreading dust (rajas), as the ignorant state of man is covered in darkness by the rising passion (rajas) of juvenescence. ]

महान नगर फैली हुई धूल ( रजस ) के अंधेरे गर्भ में छिप गया था, जैसे कि मनुष्य की अज्ञानता युवावस्था के बढ़ते जुनून (रजस) द्वारा अंधेरे में ढकी हुई है।

17. [ प्रययुः क्वापि दीपौघा दिवसेनेव तारकाः ।

आययुर्बलमालोला नैशभूतपरम्पराः ॥ १७ ॥

prayayuḥ kvāpi dīpaughā divaseneva tārakāḥ |āyayurbalamālolā naiśabhūtaparamparāḥ || 17 ||

The burning lights became as dim, as the fading stars of heaven by day light, and the darkness of night became as thick, as the devils of darkness gather their strength at night. ]

जलती हुई रोशनियाँ दिन के प्रकाश में आकाश के लुप्त होते तारों की तरह मंद हो गईं और रात का अँधेरा इतना घना हो गया, जैसे अंधकार के शैतान रात में अपनी ताकत इकट्ठा करते हैं।

18. [ ददृशुस्तन्महायुद्धं द्वे लीले सा कुमारिका ।

प्रस्फुटद्धृदयेनेव देवीदत्तमहादृशौ ॥ १८ ॥

dadṛśustanmahāyuddhaṃ dve līle sā kumārikā |

prasphuṭaddhṛdayeneva devīdattamahādṛśau || 18 ||

The two Lilas saw the great battle with the virgin daughter of the minister from the tent; and they had their eyes enlightened with farsightedness by favour of the goddess. ]

दोनों लीलाओं ने तम्बू से मंत्री की कुंवारी पुत्री के साथ हुए महान युद्ध को देखा; और देवी की कृपा से उनकी आँखें दूरदर्शिता से प्रकाशित हो गईं।

19. [ प्रशेमुरथ हेतीषु प्रोद्यत्कटकटारवाः ।

एकार्णवपयःपूरैर्वालवा इव वह्नयः ॥ १९ ॥

praśemuratha hetīṣu prodyatkaṭakaṭāravāḥ |

ekārṇavapayaḥpūrairvālavā iva vahnayaḥ || 19 ||

Now there was an end of the flashing and clashing of the hostile arms in the city, as the flash and crash of submarine fires were put to an end by the all-submerging floods of the universal deluge. ]

अब नगर में शत्रुओं के शस्त्रों की चमक-दमक और टकराव बंद हो गया, जैसे विश्वव्यापी जल-प्रलय की सभी को डुबो देने वाली बाढ़ ने पनडुब्बियों की आग की चमक-दमक और टकराव बंद कर दिया था।

20. [ शनैः सेनां समाकर्षन्नाज्ञायत बलान्तरम् ।

विवेशपक्षप्रोड्डीनो मेरुरेकमिवार्णवम् ॥ २० ॥

śanaiḥ senāṃ samākarṣannājñāyata balāntaram |viveśapakṣaproḍḍīno merurekamivārṇavam || 20 ||

Viduratha collected his forces and without considering the superiority of the hostile power pressed himself forward amidst them, as the great Meru rushed into the waters of the great deluge. ]

विदूरथ ने अपनी सेना एकत्र की और शत्रु शक्ति की श्रेष्ठता पर विचार किए बिना ही उनके बीच में आगे बढ़ गया, जैसे महान मेरु महान जलप्रलय के जल में प्रवेश कर रहा था।

21. [ अथोदभूद्गुणध्वानं चटच्चटदिति स्फुटम् ।

रचितांशुमयाम्भोदाश्चेरुः परपरम्पराः ॥ २१ ॥

athodabhūdguṇadhvānaṃ caṭaccaṭaditi sphuṭam |racitāṃśumayāmbhodāśceruḥ paraparamparāḥ || 21 ||

Now the twanging of the bow strings emitted a clattering (Chatachata) sound; and the forces of the enemy advanced in battle array, like bodies of clouds with rainbows amidst them. ]

अब धनुष की डोरी की टंकार से चतचट की ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई और शत्रु सेनाएँ युद्ध के लिए इस प्रकार आगे बढ़ीं, जैसे इंद्रधनुष सहित बादल हों।

22. [ ययुरम्बरमाश्रित्य नानाहेतिविहंगमाः ।

प्रसस्रुरलमात्तासुमलिनाः शस्त्रदीप्तयः ॥ २२ ॥

yayurambaramāśritya nānāhetivihaṃgamāḥ |

prasasruralamāttāsumalināḥ śastradīptayaḥ || 22 ||

Many kinds of missiles flew as falcons in the air; and the black steel waved with a dark glare owing to the massacres they made. ]

अनेक प्रकार के प्रक्षेपास्त्र बाज़ों की तरह हवा में उड़ रहे थे; और उनके द्वारा किए गए नरसंहार के कारण काला इस्पात एक गहरी चमक के साथ लहरा रहा था ।

23. [ जज्वलुः शस्त्रसंघट्टज्वलना उल्मुकाग्निवत् ।

जगर्जुः शरधारौघान्वर्षन्तो वीरवारिदाः ॥ २३ ॥

jajvaluḥ śastrasaṃghaṭṭajvalanā ulmukāgnivat |jagarjuḥ śaradhāraughānvarṣanto vīravāridāḥ || 23 ||

The clashing swords flashed with living flames of fire by their striking against one another; and showers of arrows whistled like hissing rainfalls in the air. ]

तलवारें आपस में टकराने से अग्नि की ज्वालाएँ उत्पन्न कर रही थीं और बाणों की वर्षा हवा में फुफकारती वर्षा के समान सीटी बजा रही थी।

24. [ विविशुः क्रकचक्रूरा वीराङ्गेषु च हेतयः ।

पेतुः पटपटारावं हेतिनिष्पिष्टयोऽम्बरे ॥ २४ ॥

viviśuḥ krakacakrūrā vīrāṅgeṣu ca hetayaḥ |petuḥ paṭapaṭārāvaṃ hetiniṣpiṣṭayo'mbare || 24 ||

Two edged saws pierced the bodies of the warriors; and the flinging weapons hurtled in the air by their clashing at and crashing of each other. ]

दो धार वाले आरे योद्धाओं के शरीर में छेद कर रहे थे; और फेंके हुए हथियार एक दूसरे से टकराकर और टूटकर हवा में उछल रहे थे।

25. [ जग्मुः शमं तमांस्याशु शस्त्रकानलदीपकैः ।

बभूवुरखिला सेना नवनाराचरोमशाः ॥ २५ ॥

jagmuḥ śamaṃ tamāṃsyāśu śastrakānaladīpakaiḥ |

babhūvurakhilā senā navanārācaromaśāḥ || 25 ||

The darkness of the night was put to flight by the blaze of the weapons; and the whole army was pierced by arrows, sticking as the hairs on their bodies. ]

शस्त्रों की ज्वाला से रात्रि का अन्धकार भाग गया और सारी सेना बाणों से छिद गई, जो उनके शरीर पर बालों के समान चुभ गए ।

26. [ उत्तस्थुर्यमयात्रायां कबन्धनटपङ्क्तयः ।

जगुरुच्चै रणोद्रेकं पिशाच्यो रणदारिकाः ॥ २६ ॥

uttasthuryamayātrāyāṃ kabandhanaṭapaṅktayaḥ |

jaguruccai raṇodrekaṃ piśācyo raṇadārikāḥ || 26 ||

Headless trunks moved about as players in the horrid solemnity of the god of death (Yama); and the furies fled about at the dint of war, like the raving lasses at Bacchanal revelries. ]

मृत्यु के देवता ( यम ) के भीषण उत्सव में सिरविहीन धड़ वादक की तरह विचरण कर रहे थे; और क्रोधी लोग युद्ध के शोर से इधर-उधर भाग रहे थे, जैसे मदिरापान के उत्सव में पागल लड़कियाँ भागती हैं।

27. [ उदगुर्दन्तसंघट्टटंकारा दन्तिनां बलात् ।

ऊहुः क्षपणपाषाणमहानद्यो नभस्तले ॥ २७ ॥

udagurdantasaṃghaṭṭaṭaṃkārā dantināṃ balāt |ūhuḥ kṣapaṇapāṣāṇamahānadyo nabhastale || 27 ||

Elephants fighting with their tusks, sent a clattering noise in the air; and the stones flung from the slings, flew as a flowing stream in the sky. ]

हाथियों ने अपने दाँतों से लड़ते हुए हवा में टाप-टाप की आवाज की; और गोफन से फेंके गए पत्थर, बहती हुई धारा के रूप में आकाश में उड़ गए।

28. [ पेतुः शवा निवातास्तसंशुष्कवनपर्णवत् ।

निर्ययुर्लोहिता नद्यो रणाद्रेर्मृतिवर्षिणः ॥ २८ ॥

petuḥ śavā nivātāstasaṃśuṣkavanaparṇavat |

niryayurlohitā nadyo raṇādrermṛtivarṣiṇaḥ || 28 ||

Bodies of men were falling dead on the ground, like the dried leaves of forests blown away by blasts; and streams of blood were running in the field of battle, as if the heights of war were pouring down the floods of death below. ]

मनुष्यों के शव भूमि पर गिर रहे थे, जैसे जंगल के सूखे पत्ते हवा के झोंकों से उड़ जाते हैं; और युद्ध के मैदान में रक्त की धाराएँ बह रही थीं, मानो युद्ध की ऊँचाइयों से नीचे मृत्यु की बाढ़ बरस रही हो।

29. [ प्रशेमुः पांसवो रक्तैस्तमांस्यायुधवह्निभिः ।

युद्धैकध्यानतः शब्दा भयानि मृतिनिश्चयैः ॥ २९ ॥

praśemuḥ pāṃsavo raktaistamāṃsyāyudhavahnibhiḥ |

yuddhaikadhyānataḥ śabdā bhayāni mṛtiniścayaiḥ || 29 ||

The dust of the earth was set down by the floods of blood, and the darkness was dispelled by the blaze of weapons;all clamour ceased in intense fighting, and the fear for life, was lost under the stern resolution of death. ]

रक्त की बाढ़ से पृथ्वी की धूल बैठ गई और शस्त्रों की ज्वाला से अंधकार दूर हो गया; भीषण युद्ध से सारा कोलाहल थम गया और मृत्यु के कठोर संकल्प से जीवन का भय लुप्त हो गया।

30. [ अभवत्केवलं युद्धमपशब्दमसंभ्रमम् ।

अनाकुलाम्बुवाहाभं खड्गवीचिसटांकृतम् ॥ ३० ॥

abhavatkevalaṃ yuddhamapaśabdamasaṃbhramam |

anākulāmbuvāhābhaṃ khaḍgavīcisaṭāṃkṛtam || 30 ||

The fighting was stern without a cry or noise, like the pouring of rain in the breezeless sky, and with the glitter of swords in the darkened air, like the flashes of forky lightnings amidst the murky clouds. ]

लड़ाई भयंकर थी, बिना किसी चीख या शोर के, जैसे हवा रहित आकाश में बारिश हो रही हो, और अंधेरे हवा में तलवारों की चमक हो रही हो, जैसे घने बादलों के बीच काँटेदार बिजली की चमक हो रही हो।

31. [ खदखदरवसंवहच्छरोघं टकटकितारवसंपतद्भुशुण्डि ।

झणझणरवसंमिलन्महास्त्रं तिमितिमिवद्रणमास दुस्तरं तत् ॥ ३१ ॥

khadakhadaravasaṃvahaccharoghaṃ ṭakaṭakitāravasaṃpatadbhuśuṇḍi |

jhaṇajhaṇaravasaṃmilanmahāstraṃ timitimivadraṇamāsa dustaraṃ tat || 31 ||

The darts were flying about with a hissing noise (khad-khada); and the crow-bars hit one another with a harsh (taktaka) sound; large weapons were struck upon one another with a jarring noise (jhanjhana), and the dreadful war raged direfully in the dim darkness (timitimi) of the night. ]

भाले फुफकारते हुए (खड़-खड़ा) उड़ रहे थे; और भाले एक दूसरे पर कर्कश (टकटक) ध्वनि के साथ टकरा रहे थे; बड़े-बड़े हथियार एक दूसरे पर झंझनाहट की ध्वनि के साथ प्रहार कर रहे थे, और रात के धुंधले अंधकार (तिमितिम) में भयंकर युद्ध भड़क उठा।
