तर्क : अकाल और वर्षा की कमी के कारण चांडालों की दुर्दशा ।

राजा ने आगे कहा :-

1. [राजोवाच ।

अथ गच्छति कालेऽत्र जराजर्जरितायुषि ।

तुषारपूर्णशष्पौघसमश्मश्रुभृते मयि ॥ १ ॥

rājovāca |

atha gacchati kāle'tra jarājarjaritāyuṣi |

tuṣārapūrṇaśaṣpaughasamaśmaśrubhṛte mayi || 1 ||

1. [ The king continued to say said:—Time passed away, and old age overtook me, and turned my beard to blades of grass covered with hoar frost. ]

समय बीत गया, और बुढ़ापे ने मुझे पकड़ लिया, और मेरी दाढ़ी को पाले से ढकी घास के पत्तों में बदल दिया।

2. [कर्मवातापनुन्नेषु सरसेष्वरसेष्वपि ।

पतत्सु वासरौघेषु शीर्णपर्णगणेष्विव ॥ २ ॥

karmavātāpanunneṣu saraseṣvaraseṣvapi |patatsu vāsaraugheṣu śīrṇaparṇagaṇeṣviva || 2 ||

2. [ My days glided away in alternate joy and grief, brought on by my fate and acts; just as a river flows on with the green and dried leaves, which the winds scatter over it. ]

मेरे दिन मेरे भाग्य और कर्मों के कारण बारी-बारी से सुख और दुःख में बीत गए; जैसे नदी हरे और सूखे पत्तों के साथ बहती है, जिन्हें हवाएं अपने ऊपर बिखेर देती हैं।

3. [आजाविव शरौघेषु सुखदुःखेष्वनारतम् ।

कलहेष्वप्यकार्येषु चागच्छत्सु पतत्सु च ॥ ३ ॥

ājāviva śaraugheṣu sukhaduḥkheṣvanāratam |

kalaheṣvapyakāryeṣu cāgacchatsu patatsu ca || 3 ||

3. [ आजाविव शरौघेषु सुखदुःखेष्वनारतम् ।

कलहेष्वप्यकार्येषु चागच्छत्सु पतत्सु च ॥ ३ ॥

ājāviva śaraugheṣu sukhaduḥkheṣvanāratam |

kalaheṣvapyakāryeṣu cāgacchatsu patatsu ca || 3 ||

Quarrels and broils, misfortunes and mischances, befell on me every moment; and beset me as thickly and as fastly as the arrows of woe flying in a warfare. ]

झगड़े और झगड़े, दुर्भाग्य और विपत्तियाँ, हर पल मुझ पर आती रहती हैं; और वे मुझे युद्ध में उड़ते हुए दुःख के बाणों की तरह घनी और तेजी से घेरती हैं।

4. [ विकल्पकल्पनावर्तवर्तिनि द्विजगे जडे ।

समुद्र इव कल्लोलभरे भ्रमितचेतसि ॥ ४ ॥

vikalpakalpanāvartavartini dvijage jaḍe |samudra iva kallolabhare bhramitacetasi || 4 ||

My foolish mind kept fluttering like a bird, in the maze of my wishes and fancies; and my heart was perturbed by passions, like the sea by its raging waves. ]

मेरी मूढ़ बुद्धि मेरी इच्छाओं और कल्पनाओं की भूलभुलैया में पक्षी की तरह फड़फड़ाती रही; और मेरा हृदय वासनाओं से व्याकुल हो गया, जैसे समुद्र अपनी प्रचंड लहरों से व्याकुल हो जाता है।

5. [ चलच्चिन्ताचितं चक्रमारूढे भ्रान्त आत्मनि ।

प्रोह्यमाने तृण इव सावर्तं कालसागरे ॥ ५ ॥

calaccintācitaṃ cakramārūḍhe bhrānta ātmani |prohyamāne tṛṇa iva sāvartaṃ kālasāgare || 5 ||

My soul was revolving on the vehicle of my wandering thoughts; and I was borne away by them like a floating straw, to the whirlpool of the eventful ocean of time. ]

मेरी आत्मा मेरे भटकते विचारों के वाहन पर घूम रही थी; और मैं उनके द्वारा तैरते हुए तिनके की तरह, समय के घटनापूर्ण सागर के भंवर में बह गया।

6. [ विन्ध्योर्वीवनकीटस्य ग्रासैकशरणस्य मे ।

द्विबाहोर्गर्दभस्यात्र क्षीण इत्थं समागणे ॥ ६ ॥

vindhyorvīvanakīṭasya grāsaikaśaraṇasya me |

dvibāhorgardabhasyātra kṣīṇa itthaṃ samāgaṇe || 6 ||

I that moved about like a worm amidst the woodlands of Vindhya, for my simple supportance, felt myself in the process of years, to be weakened and pulled down in my frame, like a biped beast of burthen. ]

 मैं जो विंध्य के वनों में अपने मात्र सहारे के लिए कीड़े की तरह विचरण करता था, वर्षों के क्रम में मैंने अपने आपको दुर्बल और भार ढोने वाले द्विपाद पशु के समान अपने शरीर में घिसा हुआ अनुभव किया।

7. [ विस्मृते मम भूपत्वे शवस्येव महाजवे ।

चाण्डालत्वे स्थिरीभूते पक्षच्छिन्न इवाचले ॥ ७ ॥

vismṛte mama bhūpatve śavasyeva mahājave |cāṇḍālatve sthirībhūte pakṣacchinna ivācale || 7 ||

I forgot my royalty like a dead man, in that state of my wretchedness, and was confirmed in my belief of a Chandala, and bound to that hilly spot like a wingless bird. ]

मैं अपनी उस दीनता की स्थिति में एक मृत व्यक्ति की तरह अपने राजपाट को भूल गया, और एक चांडाल के रूप में अपने विश्वास में दृढ़ हो गया , और एक पंखहीन पक्षी की तरह उस पहाड़ी स्थान से बंधा हुआ था।

8. [ संसारमिव कल्पान्तो दावाग्निरिव काननम् ।

सागरोर्मिस्तटमिव शुष्कवृक्षमिवाशनिः ॥ ८ ॥

saṃsāramiva kalpānto dāvāgniriva kānanam |sāgarormistaṭamiva śuṣkavṛkṣamivāśaniḥ || 8 ||

The world appeared to me, as desolate as at its final desolation; and as a forest consumed by a conflagration; it seemed as the sea-shore lashed by huge surges; and as a withered tree struck by a lightning ]

यह संसार मुझे ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ, मानो यह अंतिम उजाड़ अवस्था में हो; तथा ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो यह अग्नि से भस्म हो गया हो; ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो यह समुद्र तट पर प्रचण्ड लहरों से टकरा रहा हो; तथा ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो यह सूखा हुआ वृक्ष हो, जिस पर बिजली गिरी हो।

9. [ अकाण्डे मरणोड्डीनं चण्डचण्डालमण्डलम् ।

निरन्नतृणपत्राम्बु विन्ध्यकच्छं तदाययौ ॥ ९ ॥

akāṇḍe maraṇoḍḍīnaṃ caṇḍacaṇḍālamaṇḍalam |

nirannatṛṇapatrāmbu vindhyakacchaṃ tadāyayau || 9 ||

The marshy ground at the foot of Vindhya was all dried up, and left no corn nor vegetable, nor any water for food or drink; and the whole group of Chandalas, was about to die in dearth and dryness. ]

विन्ध्य की तलहटी में दलदली भूमि पूरी तरह सूख गई थी, और उसमें न तो अनाज बचा था, न ही सब्जी, न ही खाने या पीने के लिए पानी; और चांडालों का पूरा समूह अकाल और सूखे में मरने वाला था।

10. [ न वर्षति घनव्राते दृष्टनष्टे क्वचित्स्थिते ।

पूतांगारकणोन्मिश्रगतौ वहति मारुते ॥ १० ॥

na varṣati ghanavrāte dṛṣṭanaṣṭe kvacitsthite |

pūtāṃgārakaṇonmiśragatau vahati mārute || 10 ||

The clouds ceased to rain, and disappeared from sight; and the winds blew with sparks of fire in them. ]

बादलों ने बरसना बंद कर दिया और दृष्टि से ओझल हो गए; और हवाएँ अपने साथ आग की चिंगारियाँ लेकर चलने लगीं। (मानसून की गर्म हवाएँ जिन्हें अग्नि - वृष्टि कहते हैं )।

11. [ शीर्णमर्मरपर्णासु दावाग्निवलितासु च ।

वनस्थलीषु शून्यासु चिरप्रव्रजितास्विव ॥ ११ ॥

śīrṇamarmaraparṇāsu dāvāgnivalitāsu ca |vanasthalīṣu śūnyāsu cirapravrajitāsviva || 11 ||

The forest trees were bare and leafless, and the withered leaves were strewn over the ground; wild fires were raging here and there, and the wood-lands became as desolate, as the abodes of austere ascetics. ]

वन के वृक्ष नंगे और पत्तों से रहित थे, और सूखे पत्ते जमीन पर बिखरे हुए थे; यहाँ-वहाँ दावानल भड़क रहे थे, और वन-भूमि तपस्वी तपस्वियों (रेगिस्तान में रहने वाले) के निवासों के समान उजाड़ हो गई थी।

12. [ अकाण्डमभवद्भीममुद्दामदवपावकम् ।

शोषिताशेषगहनं भस्मशेषतृणोलपम् ॥ १२ ॥

akāṇḍamabhavadbhīmamuddāmadavapāvakam |śoṣitāśeṣagahanaṃ bhasmaśeṣatṛṇolapam || 12 ||

There ensued a formidable famine, and a furious flame of wildfire spread all around;it burnt down the whole forest, and reduced the grass and gravels all to ashes. ]

वहाँ भयंकर अकाल पड़ा और चारों ओर दावानल की भयंकर ज्वाला फैल गई; इसने पूरे जंगल को जला दिया और घास और कंकड़ को राख में बदल दिया।

13. [ पांसुधूसरसर्वाङ्गं क्षुधिताशेषमानवम् ।

निरन्नतृणपानीयं देशाद्युद्दावमण्डलम् ॥ १३ ॥

pāṃsudhūsarasarvāṅgaṃ kṣudhitāśeṣamānavam |

nirannatṛṇapānīyaṃ deśādyuddāvamaṇḍalam || 13 ||

The people were daubed with ashes all over their bodies, and were famishing for want of food and drink; because the land was without any article of food or even grass or water in it, and had turned to a dreary desert. ]

लोग अपने शरीर पर राख से लिपटे हुए थे, और भोजन और पानी के अभाव में भूखे थे; क्योंकि भूमि में खाने की कोई वस्तु, घास या पानी नहीं था, और वह एक सुनसान रेगिस्तान में बदल गई थी।

14. [ कचन्मरुमरीच्यम्बुमज्जन्महिषमण्डलम् ।

वातोत्थसीकरव्यूहापरिवाहवनाम्बरम् ॥ १४ ॥

kacanmarumarīcyambumajjanmahiṣamaṇḍalam |

vātotthasīkaravyūhāparivāhavanāmbaram || 14 ||

The mirage of the desert glistened as water, and deluded the dry buffaloes to roll in it (as in a pool); and there was no current of breeze to cool the desert air. ]

रेगिस्तान की मृगतृष्णा जल के समान चमकती थी, और सूखी भैंसों को उसमें लोटने के लिए प्रेरित करती थी (जैसे तालाब में); और रेगिस्तान की हवा को ठंडा करने के लिए हवा का कोई प्रवाह नहीं था।

15. [ पानीयशब्दमात्रैकश्रवणोत्कनरव्रजम् ।

आतपाततिसंशोषसीदत्सकलमानवम् ॥ १५ ॥

pānīyaśabdamātraikaśravaṇotkanaravrajam |

ātapātatisaṃśoṣasīdatsakalamānavam || 15 ||

The call and cry for water, came only to the ears of men; who were parching under the burning rays of the torrid sun. ]

पानी के लिए पुकार और रोना केवल उन मनुष्यों के कानों तक पहुँच रहा था; जो तपती धूप की जलती हुई किरणों के नीचे (दक्कन में) झुलस रहे थे।

16. [ पत्रग्रसनसंरब्धक्षुधितोत्थितजीवितम् ।

स्वाङ्गचर्वणसंरम्भलुठद्दशनमण्डलम् ॥ १६ ॥

patragrasanasaṃrabdhakṣudhitotthitajīvitam |

svāṅgacarvaṇasaṃrambhaluṭhaddaśanamaṇḍalam || 16 ||

The hungry mob, hurrying to browse the branches and herbs, yielded their lives in those acts; while others sharpened their teeth, in their acts of tearing and devouring one another. ]

भूखी भीड़, शाखाओं और जड़ी बूटियों को चरने के लिए जल्दी कर रही थी, उन्होंने इन कार्यों में अपनी जान दे दी; जबकि अन्य लोगों ने एक दूसरे को फाड़ने और खाने के अपने कार्यों में अपने दांत तेज कर लिए।

17. [ मांसशङ्कानिगीर्णोग्रखदिराग्निकणोत्करम् ।

मण्डकासारसंग्रस्तवनपाषाणखण्डकम् ॥ १७ ॥

māṃsaśaṅkānigīrṇograkhadirāgnikaṇotkaram |

maṇḍakāsārasaṃgrastavanapāṣāṇakhaṇḍakam || 17 ||

Some ran to bite the gum of catechu, thinking it to be a bit of flesh; while others were swallowing the stones, as if they were cakes lying on the ground before them. ]

कुछ लोग कत्थे के गोंद को मांस का टुकड़ा समझकर उसे काटने के लिए दौड़े; जबकि अन्य लोग पत्थरों को निगल रहे थे, मानो वे उनके सामने जमीन पर पड़े हुए केक हों।

18. [ अन्योन्यभूतसंसक्तमातृपुत्रपितृव्रजम् ।

गृध्रोदररटत्सारनिगीर्णवरसारिकम् ॥ १८ ॥

anyonyabhūtasaṃsaktamātṛputrapitṛvrajam |

gṛdhrodararaṭatsāranigīrṇavarasārikam || 18 || ]

The mother, son and father are attached to each other. The vulture’s stomach roared and swallowed the best of the lizards. 18 ॥

माता, पुत्र और पिता एक-दूसरे से जुड़े हुए हैं। गिद्ध का पेट दहाड़कर श्रेष्ठ छिपकलियों को निगल गया। 18॥

19. परस्पराङ्गविच्छेदरक्तसिक्तधरातलम् ।

हरिग्रसनसंरब्धमत्तक्षुधितवारणम् ॥ १९ ॥

parasparāṅgavicchedaraktasiktadharātalam |

harigrasanasaṃrabdhamattakṣudhitavāraṇam || 19 ||

The ground was sprinkled with blood, by the mutual biting and tearing of men; as when blood is spilt in profusion, by the lion's killing a big and starving elephant.

मनुष्यों के परस्पर काटने और फाड़ने से भूमि रक्त से भर गई थी; जैसे सिंह द्वारा किसी बड़े और भूखे हाथी को मारने से बहुत अधिक रक्त बह जाता है।

20. [ दरीनिगरणैकैकसिंहभ्रमणभीषणम् ।

अन्योन्यग्रसनोद्युक्तलोकमल्लकृतं वहत् ॥ २० ॥

darīnigaraṇaikaikasiṃhabhramaṇabhīṣaṇam |

anyonyagrasanodyuktalokamallakṛtaṃ vahat || 20 ||

Every one was as ferocious as a lion, in his attempt to devour another as his prey; and men mutually fought with one another, as wrestlers do in their contest. ]

हर एक व्यक्ति सिंह के समान क्रूर था, जो एक दूसरे को अपना शिकार बनाने का प्रयत्न कर रहा था; और लोग आपस में एक दूसरे से उसी प्रकार लड़ रहे थे, जैसे पहलवान अपनी प्रतियोगिता में लड़ते हैं।

21. [ निष्पत्रपादपोड्डीनप्रौढाङ्गारमयानिलम् ।

रक्तपानोत्कमार्जारलीढधातुतटावनि ॥ २१ ॥

niṣpatrapādapoḍḍīnaprauḍhāṅgāramayānilam |

raktapānotkamārjāralīḍhadhātutaṭāvani || 21 ||

The trees were leafless, and the hot winds were blowing as fire-brands on all sides; and wild cats were licking the human blood, that was spilt on the rocky ground. ]

वृक्ष पत्तों से रहित हो गए थे, और चारों ओर से गर्म हवाएं आग की लपटों के समान चल रही थीं; और जंगली बिल्लियां पथरीली भूमि पर गिरा हुआ मानव रक्त चाट रही थीं।

22. [ ज्वालाघनघटाटोपसावर्तसवनानिलम् ।

सर्वस्थलरसद्वह्निपुञ्जपिञ्जरजङ्गलम् ॥ २२ ॥

jvālāghanaghaṭāṭopasāvartasavanānilam |

sarvasthalarasadvahnipuñjapiñjarajaṅgalam || 22 ||

The flame of the wild fire rose high in the air, with clouds of smoke whirling with the howling winds of the forest; it growled aloud in every place, and filled the forest-land with heaps of brown cinders and burning fire brands. ]

जंगली आग की लपटें हवा में ऊंची उठ रही थीं, जंगल की तेज हवाओं के साथ धुएं के बादल घूम रहे थे; यह हर जगह जोर से गर्जना कर रही थी, और जंगल की भूमि को भूरे रंग के अंगारों और जलती हुई आग के ढेर से भर दिया।

23. [ दग्धाजगरकुञ्जोत्थधूममांसलगुल्मकम् ।

मारुतावलितज्वालासंध्याभ्रवलिताम्बरम् ॥ २३ ॥

dagdhājagarakuñjotthadhūmamāṃsalagulmakam |

mārutāvalitajvālāsaṃdhyābhravalitāmbaram || 23 ||

Huge serpents were burnt in their caves, and the fumes rising from these burning bodies, served to grow the poisonous plants on the spot;while the flame stretching aloft with the winds, gave the sky an appearance of the glory of the setting sun. ]

विशाल सर्पों को उनकी गुफाओं में जला दिया गया था, और इन जलते हुए शरीरों से उठने वाले धुएं ने उस स्थान पर जहरीले पौधों को उगाने का काम किया; जबकि हवाओं के साथ ऊपर तक फैली हुई ज्वाला ने आकाश को डूबते सूरज की महिमा का आभास दिया।

24. [ उद्दामरवमुद्भान्तभस्मनाऽस्तम्भमण्डलम् ।

साक्रन्दनरदाराग्रदीनार्भककृतारवम् ॥ २४ ॥

uddāmaravamudbhāntabhasmanā'stambhamaṇḍalam |

sākrandanaradārāgradīnārbhakakṛtāravam || 24 ||

Heaps of ashes were lifted like dust, by the high howling winds, and stood as domes unsupported by pillars in the open sky; and the little children stood crying for fear of them, beside their weeping parents. ]

 तेज हवाओं के कारण राख के ढेर धूल की तरह उड़ गए और खुले आकाश में बिना खंभों के सहारे के गुम्बदों की तरह खड़े हो गए; और छोटे बच्चे अपने रोते हुए माता-पिता के पास उनके डर के मारे रो रहे थे।

25. [ संभ्रान्तपुरुषव्यूहदन्तकृत्तमहाशवम् ।

मांसगन्धजवग्रस्तरक्तारक्तनिजाङ्गुलि ॥ २५ ॥

saṃbhrāntapuruṣavyūhadantakṛttamahāśavam |

māṃsagandhajavagrastaraktāraktanijāṅguli || 25 ||

There were some men who tore a dead body with their teeth, and in their great haste to devour the flesh, bit their own hands and fingers, which were besmeared in their own blood. ]

कुछ लोग ऐसे थे जिन्होंने मृत शरीर को अपने दांतों से फाड़ डाला, और मांस खाने की जल्दी में अपने ही हाथों और उंगलियों को काट लिया, जो उनके अपने ही खून से सने हुए थे।

नीलपत्रलताशङ्कापीतधूमघनच्छवि ।

भ्रमद्गृध्रनिगीर्णोग्रनभोभ्रान्तोल्मुकामिषम् ॥ २६ ॥

nīlapatralatāśaṅkāpītadhūmaghanacchavi |

bhramadgṛdhranigīrṇogranabhobhrāntolmukāmiṣam || 26 ||

The vultures flying in the air, darted upon the smoke, thinking it a turret of trees, and pounced upon the fire brands, taking them for bits of raw flesh. ]

हवा में उड़ते हुए गिद्धों ने धुएँ को वृक्षों का बुर्ज समझकर उस पर झपट्टा मारा और अग्नि की लकड़ियों पर झपट पड़े, उन्हें कच्चे मांस के टुकड़े समझकर।

27. [ इतरेतरभिन्नाङ्गलोकविद्रवणाकुलम् ।

ज्वलिताग्निटणत्कारविदीर्णहृदयोदरम् ॥ २७ ॥

itaretarabhinnāṅgalokavidravaṇākulam |

jvalitāgniṭaṇatkāravidīrṇahṛdayodaram || 27 ||

Men biting and tearing one another, were flying in all directions;when the splitting of the burning wood hit upon their breasts and bellies, and made them gory with blood gushing out of them. ]

लोग एक दूसरे को काटते और फाड़ते हुए चारों ओर भाग रहे थे; तभी जलती हुई लकड़ियों के टुकड़े उनकी छाती और पेट पर लगे और उनमें से खून बहने लगा और वे लहूलुहान हो गए।

28. [ गर्तमारुतक्राङ्कारभीमदावाग्निवल्गनम् ।

भीताजगरफूत्कारपतदङ्गारपादपम् ॥ २८ ॥

gartamārutakrāṅkārabhīmadāvāgnivalganam |

bhītājagaraphūtkārapatadaṅgārapādapam || 28 ||

The winds were howling in the hollow caves, and the flames of the wild fire flashing with fury; the snakes were hissing for fear of these, and the burnt woods were falling down with hideous noise. ]

खोखली गुफाओं में हवाएँ गरज रही थीं, और जंगली आग की लपटें क्रोध से भड़क रही थीं; इनसे डरकर साँप फुंफकार रहे थे, और जली हुई लकड़ियाँ भयंकर आवाज के साथ नीचे गिर रही थीं।

29. [ सदकाण्डस्फुटद्देशं प्राप्य तच्छुष्ककोटरम् ।

द्वादशार्काग्निदग्धस्य जगतोऽनुकृतिं ययौ ॥ २९ ॥

sadakāṇḍasphuṭaddeśaṃ prāpya tacchuṣkakoṭaram |

dvādaśārkāgnidagdhasya jagato'nukṛtiṃ yayau || 29 ||

Thus beset by dangers and horrors, with no other shelter than the rugged hollows of rocks, this place presented a picture of this world, with its circumambient flames, burning as the twelve zodiacal suns on high. ]

इस प्रकार खतरों और भयावहताओं से घिरा हुआ, चट्टानों के ऊबड़-खाबड़ खोखलों के अलावा कोई अन्य आश्रय न होने के कारण, यह स्थान इस दुनिया की एक तस्वीर प्रस्तुत करता था, जिसके चारों ओर ज्वालाएँ जल रही थीं, जो ऊपर बारह राशिचक्रीय सूर्यों के समान जल रही थीं।

30. [ ज्वलदनलजटालवृक्षखण्डप्रसरमरुत्प्रसरावनुन्नलोकः ।

ज्वलनतपनभास्करात्मजानां रमणगृहानुकृतिं जगाम देशः ॥ ३० ॥

jvaladanalajaṭālavṛkṣakhaṇḍaprasaramarutprasarāvanunnalokaḥ |

jvalanatapanabhāskarātmajānāṃ ramaṇagṛhānukṛtiṃ jagāma deśaḥ || 30 ||

The winds were blowing hot amidst the burning woods and rocks, and drying up all things; and the heat of the fire below and the sunbeams above, together with the domestic calamities caused by influence of the planet Saturn, made this place a counterpart of this woeful world. ]

जलते हुए जंगलों और चट्टानों के बीच गर्म हवाएं चल रही थीं और सब कुछ सुखा रही थीं; और नीचे आग की गर्मी और ऊपर सूर्य की किरणें, साथ ही शनि ग्रह के प्रभाव से होने वाली घरेलू आपदाओं ने इस जगह को इस दुःखद दुनिया का प्रतिरूप बना दिया।
