देवी ने आगे कहा :—

1. [ श्रीसरस्वत्युवाच ।

अस्मिन् रणवरे राजन्मर्तव्यं भवताधुना ।

प्राप्तव्यं प्राक्तनं राज्यं सर्वं प्रत्यक्षमेव ते ॥ १ ॥

śrīsarasvatyuvāca |

asmin raṇavare rājanmartavyaṃ bhavatādhunā |prāptavyaṃ prāktanaṃ rājyaṃ sarvaṃ pratyakṣameva te || 1 ||

The goddess added:—Know further, O prince! that you are destined to fall in this great battle, and will have your former realm, presented to you in the same manner as before. ]

हे राजकुमार! यह भी जान लो कि इस महान युद्ध में तुम्हारा नाश होना निश्चित है और तुम्हारा पूर्व राज्य तुम्हें उसी प्रकार प्रदान कर दिया जाएगा, जैसा पहले किया गया था।

2. [ कुमार्या मन्त्रिणा चैव त्वया च प्राक्तनं पुरम् ।

आगन्तव्यं शवीभूतं प्राप्तव्यं तच्छरीरकम् ॥ २ ॥

kumāryā mantriṇā caiva tvayā ca prāktanaṃ puram |
āgantavyaṃ śavībhūtaṃ prāptavyaṃ taccharīrakam || 2 ||

Your minister and his maiden daughter will accompany you to your former city, and you shall enter your lifeless corpse, lying in state in the palace. ]

आपके मंत्री और उनकी कुंवारी बेटी आपके साथ आपके पूर्व नगर में जाएंगे, और आप महल में पड़ी अपनी निर्जीव लाश के साथ प्रवेश करेंगे।

3. [ आवां यावो यथायातं वातरूपेण च त्वया ।

आगन्तव्यः स देशस्तु कुमार्या मन्त्रिणापि च ॥ ३ ॥

āvāṃ yāvo yathāyātaṃ vātarūpeṇa ca tvayā |
āgantavyaḥ sa deśastu kumāryā mantriṇāpi ca || 3 ||

We shall fly there as winds before you, and you will follow us accompanied by the minister and his virgin daughter as one returning to his native country. ]

हम तुम्हारे आगे वायु की भाँति उड़ेंगे और तुम मंत्री तथा उसकी कुंवारी पुत्री के साथ हमारे पीछे-पीछे चलोगे, मानो कोई अपने देश को लौट रहा हो।

4. [ अन्यैव गतिरश्वस्य गतिरन्या खरोष्ट्रयोः ।

मदस्विन्नकपोलस्य गतिरन्यैव दन्तिनः ॥ ४ ॥

anyaiva gatiraśvasya gatiranyā kharoṣṭrayoḥ |
madasvinnakapolasya gatiranyaiva dantinaḥ || 4 ||

Your courses thereto will be as slow or swift as those of horses, elephants, asses, or camels, but our course is quite different from any of these. ]

तुम्हारी चाल घोड़ों, हाथियों, गधों या ऊँटों की तरह धीमी या तीव्र होगी, लेकिन हमारी चाल इनमें से किसी से भी बिल्कुल भिन्न है।

5. [ प्रस्तुतेति कथा यावन्मिथो मधुरभाषिणोः ।

तावत्प्रविश्य संभ्रान्त उवाचोर्ध्वस्थितो नरः ॥ ५ ॥

prastuteti kathā yāvanmitho madhurabhāṣiṇoḥ |
tāvatpraviśya saṃbhrānta uvācordhvasthito naraḥ || 5 ||

As the prince and the goddess were going on with this sweet conversation, there arrived a man on horse back before them in great hurry and confusion. ]

जब राजकुमार और देवी इस मधुर वार्तालाप में व्यस्त थे, तभी एक आदमी बड़ी जल्दबाजी और घबराहट में घोड़े पर सवार होकर उनके सामने आ पहुँचा।

उसने कहा :-

[देव सायकचक्रासिगदापीरघवृष्टिमत् ।

महत्परबलं प्राप्तमेकार्णव इवोद्धतः ॥ ६ ॥

deva sāyakacakrāsigadāpīraghavṛṣṭimat |
mahatparabalaṃ prāptamekārṇava ivoddhataḥ || 6 ||

He said:—Lord! I come to tell that, there are showers of darts and disks, and swords and clubs, falling upon us as rain, from the hostile forces, and they have been forcing upon us as a flood on all sides.]

हे प्रभु! मैंने बताया कि शत्रु सेना की ओर से हम पर वर्षा के रूप में भालों, चक्रों, तलवारों और लाठियों की वर्षा हो रही है, और वे चारों ओर से बाढ़ के रूप में पर बरस रहे हैं।

7. [ कल्पकालानिलोद्धूतकुलाचलशिलोपमम् ।

गदाशक्तिभुशुण्डीनां वृष्टिं मुञ्चति तुष्टिमत् ॥ ७ ॥

kalpakālāniloddhūtakulācalaśilopamam |
gadāśaktibhuśuṇḍīnāṃ vṛṣṭiṃ muñcati tuṣṭimat || 7 ||

They have been raining their heavy weapons upon us at pleasure, like fragments of rocks hurled down from the heads of high hills, by the impetuous gusts of a hurricane. ]

वे अपनी इच्छानुसार हम पर अपने भारी हथियारों की वर्षा कर रहे हैं, जैसे तूफान के तेज झोंकों द्वारा ऊंची पहाड़ियों के शिखरों से चट्टानों के टुकड़े नीचे फेंके जाते हैं।

8. [ नगरे नगसंकाशे लग्नोऽग्निर्व्याप्तदिक्तटः ।

दहंश्चटचटास्फोटैः पातयत्युत्तमां पुरीम् ॥ ८ ॥

nagare nagasaṃkāśe lagno'gnirvyāptadiktaṭaḥ |
dahaṃścaṭacaṭāsphoṭaiḥ pātayatyuttamāṃ purīm || 8 ||

There they have set fire to our rock-like city, which like a wild fire, is raging on all sides. It is burning and ravaging with chat chat sounds, and hurling the houses with a hideous noise. ]

वहाँ उन्होंने हमारे चट्टान जैसे शहर में आग लगा दी है, जो जंगली आग की तरह, सभी तरफ भड़क रही है। यह चट चट की आवाज़ के साथ जल रही है और तबाही मचा रही है, और घरों को भयंकर शोर के साथ गिरा रही है।

9. [ कल्पाम्बुदघटातुल्या व्योम्नि धूममहाद्रयः ।

बलात्प्रोड्डयनं कर्तुं प्रवृत्ता गरुडा इव ॥ ९ ॥

kalpāmbudaghaṭātulyā vyomni dhūmamahādrayaḥ |
balātproḍḍayanaṃ kartuṃ pravṛttā garuḍā iva || 9 ||

The smoke rising as heaving hills, have overspread the skies like diluvian clouds; and the flame of fire, ascending on high, resembles the phoenix flying in the sky. ]

धुआँ उछलते हुए पहाड़ों की तरह उठ रहा है, और जलप्रलय के बादलों की तरह आकाश में फैल गया है; और ऊपर उठती हुई अग्नि की ज्वाला आकाश में उड़ते हुए फीनिक्स पक्षी के समान है।

वसिष्ठ ने कहा :—

10. [ श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।

ससंभ्रमं वदत्येवं पुरुषे परुषारवः ।
उदभूत्पूरयन्नाशा बहिः कोलाहलो महान् ॥ १० ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
sasaṃbhramaṃ vadatyevaṃ puruṣe paruṣāravaḥ |
udabhūtpūrayannāśā bahiḥ kolāhalo mahān || 10 ||

Vasishtha said:—As the royal marshal was delivering with trepidation this unpleasant intelligence, there arose a loud cry without, filling the sky with its uproar. ]

जब शाही मार्शल घबराते हुए यह अप्रिय सूचना दे रहा था, तो बाहर से एक जोरदार चीख उठी, जिसने आकाश को अपने कोलाहल से भर दिया (हल्लाहल्लू- कोला हलम्)।

11. [ बलादाकर्णकृष्टानां धनुषां शरवर्षिणाम् ।

बृंहतामतिमत्तानां कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम् ॥ ११ ॥

balādākarṇakṛṣṭānāṃ dhanuṣāṃ śaravarṣiṇām |
bṛṃhatāmatimattānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ tarasvinām || 11 ||

The twanging (tankara) of bow strings drawn to the ears, the rustling (sarsara) of flying arrows flung with full force; the loud roaring (bringhana) of furious elephants, and the shrieks (chitkara) of frightened ones. ]

कानों तक खींची गई धनुष की डोरियों की टंकार, पूरे बल से फेंके गए बाणों की सरसराहट, क्रोधित हाथियों की भयंकर गर्जना और भयभीत लोगों की चीखें।

12. [ पुरे चटचटास्फोटैर्दहतां जातवेदसाम् ।

पौराणां दग्धदाराणां महाहलहलारवैः ॥ १२ ॥

pure caṭacaṭāsphoṭairdahatāṃ jātavedasām |
paurāṇāṃ dagdhadārāṇāṃ mahāhalahalāravaiḥ || 12 ||

The gorgeous elephants bursting in the city with a clattering (chatchata) sound; and the high halloos (halahala) of citizens, whose houses have been burnt down on the ground:— ]

भव्य हाथी शहर में चिंघाड़ते हुए (चटचटा) ध्वनि करते हुए दौड़ रहे हैं; और उन नागरिकों की ऊँची हल्लौस ( हालाँछन ) जिनके घर जमीन पर जल गए हैं:—(यहाँ दग्धदारा अरबी दग्धघद-दार, का अर्थ जला हुआ घर और जली हुई पत्नी दोनों है)।

13. [ तरतामग्निखण्डानां टांकारः कथितो रवैः ।

ज्वलितानां परिस्पन्दाद्धगद्धगिति चार्चिषाम् ॥ १३ ॥

taratāmagnikhaṇḍānāṃ ṭāṃkāraḥ kathito ravaiḥ |
jvalitānāṃ parispandāddhagaddhagiti cārciṣām || 13 ||

The falling and flying of burnt embers with a crackling noise (tankara); and the burning of raging fire with a hoarse sound (dhaghdhaga Arabic daghdagha, Bengali dhakdhak):— ]

जलते हुए अंगारों का चटकने की आवाज (टंकारा) के साथ गिरना और उड़ना; और भड़की हुई आग का कर्कश आवाज (धगधग) के साथ जलना ( अरबी दघदघा, बंगाली धकधक):—

14. [ अथ वातायनाद्देव्यौ मन्त्री राजा विदूरथः ।

ददृशुः प्रोल्लसन्नादं महानिशि महापुरम् ॥ १४ ॥

atha vātāyanāddevyau mantrī rājā vidūrathaḥ |
dadṛśuḥ prollasannādaṃ mahāniśi mahāpuram || 14 ||

All these were heard and seen by the goddesses and the prince and his minister, from an opening of the tent; and the city was found to be in a blaze in the darkness of the night. ]

ये सब बातें देवियों, राजकुमार और उसके मंत्री ने तम्बू के एक छेद से सुनी और देखीं; और रात के अंधेरे में नगर में आग लग गई।

15. [ प्रलयानलसंक्षुब्धपूर्णैकार्णवरंहसा ।

पूर्णं परबलेनोग्रहेतिमेघतरङ्गिणा ॥ १५ ॥

pralayānalasaṃkṣubdhapūrṇaikārṇavaraṃhasā |
pūrṇaṃ parabalenograhetimeghataraṅgiṇā || 15 ||

It was as the conflagration or fiery ocean of the last day, and the city was covered by clouds of the hostile army, with their flashing weapons, waving on all sides. ]

यह अंतिम दिन की ज्वाला या अग्निमय सागर के समान था, और नगर शत्रु सेना के बादलों से ढका हुआ था, जिनके चमकते हुए हथियार चारों ओर लहरा रहे थे।

16. [ कल्पान्तवह्निविगलन्मेरुभूधरभासुरैः ।

दह्यमानं महाज्वालाज्वालैरम्बरपूरकैः ॥ १६ ॥

kalpāntavahnivigalanmerubhūdharabhāsuraiḥ |
dahyamānaṃ mahājvālājvālairambarapūrakaiḥ || 16 ||

The flame rose as high as the sky, melted down big edifices like hills by the all dissolving fire of destruction ]

ज्वाला आकाश जितनी ऊँची उठ गयी, विनाश की सर्वव्यापी अग्नि ने पर्वतों के समान बड़ी-बड़ी इमारतों को पिघला दिया।

17. [  मुष्टिग्राह्यमहामेघगर्जासंतर्जितोर्जितैः ।

घोरं कलकलारावैर्मांसलैर्दस्युजल्पितैः ॥ १७ ॥

muṣṭigrāhyamahāmeghagarjāsaṃtarjitorjitaiḥ|ghoraṃ kalakalārāvairmāṃsalairdasyujalpitaiḥ || 17 ||

Bodies of thick clouds roared on high, and threatened the people, like the clamour (kala-kala) of the gangs of stout robbers, that were gathered on the ground for plunder and booty.

घने बादलों के समूह ऊपर से गरजते हुए लोगों को धमका रहे थे, जैसे कि मोटे डाकुओं के गिरोहों का कोलाहल ( काल -काल) जो लूट और माल के लिए जमीन पर इकट्ठे हुए थे।

18. [ पुष्करावर्तसंकाशधूम्रूभ्रपिहिताम्बरम् ।

प्रोड्डीनहेमाग्रनिभैर्ज्वालापुञ्जैर्निरन्तरम् ॥ १८ ॥

puṣkarāvartasaṃkāśadhūmrūbhrapihitāmbaram |
proḍḍīnahemāgranibhairjvālāpuñjairnirantaram || 18 ||

The heavens were hidden under clouds of smoke, rolling as the shades of Pushkara and Avarta, and the flames of fire, were flashing, like the golden peaks of Meru. ]

आकाश धुएँ के बादलों में छिपा हुआ था, जो पुष्कर और अवर्त की छाया की तरह घूम रहे थे , और अग्नि की लपटें, मेरु के सुनहरे शिखरों की तरह चमक रही थीं ।

19. [ तरदुल्मुकखण्डोग्रतारातरलिताम्बरम् ।

अन्योन्यदेशसद्मौघप्रज्वलज्ज्वलनाचलम् ॥ १९ ॥

taradulmukakhaṇḍogratārātaralitāmbaram |
anyonyadeśasadmaughaprajvalajjvalanācalam || 19 ||

Burning cinders and sparks of fire, were glittering like meteors and stars in the sky; and the blazing houses and towers glared as burning mountains in the midst. ]

जलती हुई राख और आग की चिंगारियाँ आकाश में उल्काओं और तारों की तरह चमक रही थीं; और बीच में जलते हुए घर और मीनारें जलते हुए पहाड़ों की तरह चमक रही थीं।

20. [ हतसैन्यपुरापातं द्रुताङ्गाराभ्रकोटरैः ।

कर्कशाक्रन्दनिर्दग्धलोकपूगोग्रगर्जितम् ॥ २० ॥

hatasainyapurāpātaṃ drutāṅgārābhrakoṭaraiḥ |
karkaśākrandanirdagdhalokapūgogragarjitam || 20 ||

The relics of the forces were beset by the spreading flames of clouds of fire, and the half burnt citizens (with their bitter cries), were kept from flight, for fear of the threatening enemy abroad. ]

सेनाओं के अवशेष आग के बादलों की फैलती लपटों से घिर गए थे, और आधे जले हुए नागरिक (अपनी करुण पुकार के साथ), विदेश में घात लगाए बैठे शत्रु के भय से भागने से रोके गए थे।

21. [ कृशानुकणनाराचनिरन्तरतराम्बरम् ।

बहुहेतिशिलाजाललुठद्दग्धपुरोत्करम् ॥ २१ ॥

kṛśānukaṇanārācanirantaratarāmbaram |
bahuhetiśilājālaluṭhaddagdhapurotkaram || 21 ||

Sleets of arrowy sparks flying in the air on all sides, and showers of weapons falling in every way, burnt and pierced the citizens in large numbers. ]

चारों ओर से हवा में उड़ती हुई बाणों की चिनगारियाँ और हर ओर से गिरती हुई अस्त्र-शस्त्रों की वर्षा ने बड़ी संख्या में नागरिकों को जला दिया और उन्हें छेद दिया ।

22. [ रणद्द्विरदसंघट्टकुट्टितोद्भटसद्भटम् ।

विद्रवत्तस्करच्छेदमार्गकीर्णमहाधनम् ॥ २२ ॥

raṇaddviradasaṃghaṭṭakuṭṭitodbhaṭasadbhaṭam |
vidravattaskaracchedamārgakīrṇamahādhanam || 22 ||

The greatest and most expert champions, were crashed under the feet of elephants in fighting; and the roads were heaped with treasures, wrested from the robbers in their retreat. ]

बड़े-बड़े और कुशल योद्धा युद्ध में हाथियों के पैरों तले कुचल दिए गए; और सड़कें भागते हुए लुटेरों से छीने गए खजाने से भर गईं।

23. [ अङ्गारराशिनिपतन्नरनार्युग्ररोदनम् ।

स्फुटच्चटचटाशब्दप्रलुठत्स्फुटकाष्ठकम् ॥ २३ ॥

aṅgārarāśinipatannaranāryugrarodanam |
sphuṭaccaṭacaṭāśabdapraluṭhatsphuṭakāṣṭhakam || 23 ||

There were wailings of men and women at the falling of fire-brands upon them; and the splitting of splinters and the slitting of timbers emitted a phat-phat noise all around ]

अग्नि की लकड़ियाँ अपने ऊपर गिरने से पुरुष और स्त्रियाँ चिल्लाने लगे; लकड़ियाँ टूटने और लकड़ी के टूटने से चारों ओर फट-फट की आवाज होने लगी।

24. [ विपुलालातचक्रौघशतसूर्यनभस्तलम् ।

अङ्गारशिखिराकीर्णसमस्तवसुधातलम् ॥ २४ ॥

vipulālātacakraughaśatasūryanabhastalam |
aṅgāraśikhirākīrṇasamastavasudhātalam || 24 ||

Big blocks of burning wood were blown up, blazing as burning suns in the air; and heaps of embers filled the face of the earth with living fire. ]

जलती हुई लकड़ियों के बड़े-बड़े टुकड़े हवा में जलते हुए सूर्य की तरह चमक रहे थे; और अंगारों के ढेरों ने पृथ्वी को जीवित आग से भर दिया।

25. [ दग्धाग्निकाष्ठक्रेकाररणज्जवलनवैणवम् ।

दग्धजन्तुघनाक्रन्दरुदत्सकलसैनिकम् ॥ २५ ॥

dagdhāgnikāṣṭhakrekāraraṇajjavalanavaiṇavam |
dagdhajantughanākrandarudatsakalasainikam || 25 ||

The cracking of combustible woods and the bursting of burning bamboos, the cries of the parched brutes and the howling of the soldiers, re-echoed in the air. ]

दहनशील लकड़ियों का चटकना और जलते हुए बाँसों का फटना, प्यास से तड़पते पशुओं का चिल्लाना और सैनिकों का चिल्लाना, हवा में गूंज रहा था ।

26. [ पांसुशेषात्तराजश्रीवृद्धतृप्तहुताशनम् ।

सकलग्रसनारम्भसोद्योगाग्निमहाशनम् ॥ २६ ॥

pāṃsuśeṣāttarājaśrīvṛddhatṛptahutāśanam |
sakalagrasanārambhasodyogāgnimahāśanam || 26 ||

The flaming fire was quenched after consuming the royalty to ashes, and the devouring flame ceased after it had reduced everything to cinders. ]

राजपरिवार को भस्म कर देने के बाद प्रज्वलित अग्नि बुझ गई और सब कुछ राख कर देने के बाद भस्म करने वाली ज्वाला शांत हो गई।

27. [ यदृच्छात्कारडात्कारकठिनाग्निरटद्गृहम् ।

अनन्तजन्तुभोज्यान्नवह्निभुक्तेन्धनस्पृहम् ॥ २७ ॥

yadṛcchātkāraḍātkārakaṭhināgniraṭadgṛham |
anantajantubhojyānnavahnibhuktendhanaspṛham || 27 ||

The sudden outbreak of the fire was as the outburst of house breaking robbers upon the sleeping inhabitants; and it made its prey of everything (whether living or lifeless), that fell in its way. ]

आग का अचानक भड़कना ऐसा था जैसे घर में घुसने वाले लुटेरों का सोये हुए निवासियों पर आक्रमण हो; और उसने अपने रास्ते में आने वाली हर चीज़ को (चाहे जीवित हो या निर्जीव) अपना शिकार बना लिया।

28. [ अथ शुश्राव तत्रासौ गिरो राजा विदूरथः ।

योधानां दग्धदाराणां पश्यतामभिधावताम् ॥ २८ ॥

atha śuśrāva tatrāsau giro rājā vidūrathaḥ |
yodhānāṃ dagdhadārāṇāṃ paśyatāmabhidhāvatām || 28 ||

At this moment the prince Viduratha heard a voice, proceeding from his soldiers, at the sight of their wives flying from the scorching flames. ]

इस समय राजकुमार विदूरथ ने एक आवाज सुनी, जो उसके सैनिकों की ओर से आ रही थी, उन्होंने अपनी पत्नियों को झुलसती हुई लपटों से उड़ते हुए देखा था।

29. [ हा मत्तमरुदूर्ध्वस्थानङ्गार गृहपादपान् ।

रणत्खरखरं नीरजालामातपपन्थिनः ॥ २९ ॥

hā mattamarudūrdhvasthānaṅgāra gṛhapādapān |
raṇatkharakharaṃ nīrajālāmātapapanthinaḥ || 29 ||

Oh! the high winds, that have blown the flames to the tops of our household trees, with their rustling sound (kharakhara) and hindered our taking shelter under their cooling umbrage. ]

ओह! तेज़ हवाओं ने अपनी सरसराहट (खरखरा) से आग की लपटों को हमारे घरेलू वृक्षों की चोटियों तक उड़ा दिया है और हमें उनकी शीतल छाया में आश्रय लेने से रोक दिया है।

30. हा दग्धदाराः प्रालेयशीता देहेषु दन्तिनाम् ।

मग्ना मनस्तु महतामिव विज्ञानसूक्तयः ॥ ३० ॥

hā dagdhadārāḥ prāleyaśītā deheṣu dantinām |
magnā manastu mahatāmiva vijñānasūktayaḥ || 20 ||

The relics of the forces were beset by the spreading flames of clouds of fire, and the half burnt citizens (with their bitter cries), were kept from flight, for fear of the threatening enemy abroad.

. हमारी पत्नियों के जलने पर अफसोस है, जो पहले हमारे शरीर के लिए बर्फ की तरह ठंडी थीं (हर दर्द की पीड़ा को कम करके); और जिनकी राख अब हमारे वक्षस्थलों में शंख के चूने की तरह विश्राम कर रही है, अर्थात् आध्यात्मिक शरीरों ( सूक्ष्म - देह ) की उदात्त अवस्था में ।

31. [ हा तात हेतयो लग्नास्तरुणीकबरीतृणे ।

ज्वलन्ति शुष्कपर्णौघा इव वीरानिलेरिताः ॥ ३१ ॥

hā tāta hetayo lagnāstaruṇīkabarītṛṇe |
jvalanti śuṣkaparṇaughā iva vīrānileritāḥ || 31 ||

Oh! the mighty power of fire, that has set to flame the forelocks of our fair damsels, and is burning the braids of their hair, like blades of grass or straws. ]

ओह! अग्नि की प्रचंड शक्ति, जिसने हमारी सुंदर युवतियों के माथे को जला दिया है, और उनके बालों की लटों को घास या तिनकों की तरह जला रही है।

32. [ आवर्तननदीदीर्घा वहत्यूर्ध्वतरङ्गिणी ।

पश्येयं धूमयमुना व्योमगङ्गां प्रधावति ॥ ३२ ॥

āvartananadīdīrghā vahatyūrdhvataraṅgiṇī |
paśyeyaṃ dhūmayamunā vyomagaṅgāṃ pradhāvati || 32 ||

The curling smoke is ascending on high, like a whirling and long meandering river in the air, and the black and white fumes of fire, resemble the dark stream of Yamuna in one place, and the milky path of the etherial Ganga in another. ]

घुमावदार धुआँ हवा में घूमती हुई लंबी घुमावदार नदी की तरह ऊपर उठ रहा है, और आग के काले और सफेद धुएं, एक स्थान पर यमुना की काली धारा और दूसरे स्थान पर आकाशीय गंगा के दूधिया मार्ग के समान हैं।

33. [ वहदुल्मुककाष्ठोर्ध्वगामिनी धूमनिम्नगा ।

वैमानिकानन्धयति पश्याग्निकणबुद्बुदा ॥ ३३ ॥

vahadulmukakāṣṭhordhvagāminī dhūmanimnagā |
vaimānikānandhayati paśyāgnikaṇabudbudā || 33 ||

Streams of smoke bearing the brands of fire on high, dazzled the sight of the charioteers of heaven by their bubbling sparks. ]

ऊपर उठती हुई अग्नि की लपटें लिए हुए धुएँ की धाराएँ अपनी बुदबुदाती हुई चिनगारियों से स्वर्ग के रथियों की दृष्टि को चकाचौंध कर रही थीं।

34.  अस्या माता पिता भ्राता जामाता स्तनपाः सुते ।

अस्मिन्सद्मनि निर्दग्धा दग्धैवासत्समिन्धने ॥ ३४ ॥

asyā mātā pitā bhrātā jāmātā stanapāḥ sute|asminsadmani nirdagdhā dagdhaivāsatsamindhane || 34 ||

There are our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, relations and suckling babes, all burnt alive in the livid flames; and here are we burning in grief for them in these houses, which have been spared by the devouring fire. ]

हमारे पिता, माता, भाई, बहन, सम्बन्धी और दूध पीते बच्चे, सभी ज्वलंत लपटों में जीवित जल गए हैं; और हम इन घरों में, जो कि भस्म करने वाली आग से बच गए हैं, उनके लिए शोक में जल रहे हैं।

35. [हा हा हागच्छ ते शीघ्रमेतदङ्गारमन्दिरम् ।

इतः प्रवृत्तं पतितुं सुमेरुः प्रलये यथा ॥ ३५ ॥

hā hā hāgaccha te śīghrametadaṅgāramandiram |itaḥ pravṛttaṃ patituṃ sumeruḥ pralaye yathā || 35 ||

Lo! there the howling fire is fast stretching to these abodes, and here the cinders are falling as thick as the frost of Meru.]

देखो! वहाँ प्रचंड अग्नि तेजी से इन धामों तक फैल रही है, और यहाँ मेरु के हिम के समान मोटी राख गिर रही है।

36. [ अहो शरशिलाशक्तिकुन्तप्रासासिहेतयः ।

जालसंध्याभ्रपटलं विशन्ति शलभा इव ॥ ३६ ॥

aho śaraśilāśaktikuntaprāsāsihetayaḥ |

jālasaṃdhyābhrapaṭalaṃ viśanti śalabhā iva || 36 ||

Behold the direful darts and missiles dropping down as the driving rain, and penetrating the windows, like bodies of gnats in the shade of evening. ]

देखो, भयंकर बाण और प्रक्षेपास्त्र तेज वर्षा की तरह नीचे गिर रहे हैं और खिड़कियों में घुस रहे हैं, जैसे संध्या की छाया में मक्खियाँ।

37. [ हेतिप्रवाहा ज्वलनं नभस्यन्त्यां विशन्त्यहो ।

वडवानलमुज्वालमर्णःपूरा इवार्णवात् ॥ ३७ ॥

hetipravāhā jvalanaṃ nabhasyantyāṃ viśantyaho |
vaḍavānalamujvālamarṇaḥpūrā ivārṇavāt || 37 ||

The flashing spears and flaming fire, flaring above the watery ocean of the sky, resemble the submarine fire ascending to heaven. ]

आकाश के जलमय सागर के ऊपर चमकते हुए भाले और धधकती हुई आग, स्वर्ग की ओर चढ़ती हुई पनडुब्बी की आग के समान हैं।

38. [ धूमायन्ति महाभ्राणि ज्वालाः शिखरिकोटिषु ।

सरसान्यपि शुष्यन्ति हृदयानीव रागिणाम् ॥ ३८ ॥

dhūmāyanti mahābhrāṇi jvālāḥ śikharikoṭiṣu |
sarasānyapi śuṣyanti hṛdayānīva rāgiṇām || 38 ||

The smoke is rising in clouds, and the flames are tapering in the form of towers, and all that was humid and verdant, is sucked and dried up, as the hearts of the dispassionate. ]

धुआँ बादलों के रूप में उठ रहा है, और लपटें मीनारों के रूप में पतली हो रही हैं, और जो कुछ आर्द्र और हरा-भरा था, वह सब चूसा और सुखाया जा रहा है, जैसे कि विरक्त लोगों के हृदय।

39. [ आलानत्वरुषेवैता दन्तिभिर्वृक्षपङ्क्तयः ।

स्फुरत्कटकटारावं पात्यन्ते कृतचीत्कृतैः ॥ ३९ ॥

ālānatvaruṣevaitā dantibhirvṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ |
sphuratkaṭakaṭārāvaṃ pātyante kṛtacītkṛtaiḥ || 39 ||

The trees are broken down by the raging element, like posts of enraged elephants; and they are falling with a cracking noise (kata-kata), as if they were screaking at their fall. ]

वृक्ष क्रोधित हाथियों के खंभों के समान, प्रचंड तत्त्व के द्वारा टूटकर गिर रहे हैं; और वे कट-कट की ध्वनि करते हुए गिर रहे हैं , मानो वे गिरते समय चीख रहे हों।

40. फलपुष्पभारयुक्तेषु उद्यानेषु वृक्षाः प्रज्वलितवह्निना नग्नाः भवन्ति, यथा गृहस्थः धनविहीनः भवति ।

falpuspabharayukteshu udyaneshu vrukshah prajvalitavahnina nagnah bhavanti, yatha gruhasthah dhanavihinah bhavati .

  फल-फूलों से लदे हुए बगीचों के वृक्ष, जलती हुई आग के कारण वैसे ही नंगे हो जाते हैं, जैसे गृहस्थ अपनी सम्पत्ति से वंचित हो जाते हैं।

The trees in the gardens laden with fruits and flowers become bare due to the burning fire, just as a householder becomes deprived of his wealth.

41. [ मातापितृविनिर्मुक्ता बालकास्तिमिरावलीम् ।

मग्नन्तोऽङ्गेषुरथ्यासु कुड्यपातेन हा हताः ॥ ४१ ॥

mātāpitṛvinirmuktā bālakāstimirāvalīm |magnanto'ṅgeṣurathyāsu kuḍyapātena hā hatāḥ || 41 ||

Boys abandoned by their parents in the darkness of the night, were either pierced by flying arrows or crushed under the falling houses, in their flight through the streets. ]

रात के अंधेरे में अपने माता-पिता द्वारा छोड़े गए लड़के, सड़कों पर भागते समय या तो उड़ते हुए तीरों से घायल हो जाते थे या गिरते हुए घरों के नीचे कुचल जाते थे।

42. [ वातविद्रावितात्त्रस्यन्कीरण्यो रणमूर्धनि ।

पतदङ्गारकागारभारिणः कटुकूजितम् ॥ ४२ ॥

vātavidrāvitāttrasyankīraṇyo raṇamūrdhani |

patadaṅgārakāgārabhāriṇaḥ kaṭukūjitam || 42 ||

The elephants posted at the front of the army, got frightened at the flying embers driven by the winds, and fled with loud screaming at the fall of the burning houses upon them. ]

सेना के अग्रभाग में तैनात हाथी हवा से उड़ते हुए अंगारों से डर गए और जलते हुए घरों के अपने ऊपर गिरने से बड़े जोर से चिल्लाते हुए भाग गए।

43. [ पुष्टषुष्पफलस्कन्धा गतश्रीका गृहद्रुमाः ।

गता निर्दग्धसर्वस्वा गृहस्था इव दीनताम् ॥ ४३ ॥

puṣṭaṣuṣpaphalaskandhā gataśrīkā gṛhadrumāḥ | gatā nirdagdhasarvasvā gṛhasthā iva dīnatām || 43 ||

Oh! the pain of being put to the sword, is not more grievous, than that of being burnt by the fire, or smashed under the stones of the thundering engine. ]

ओह! तलवार से मारे जाने की पीड़ा, आग में जलने या गरजती हुई मशीन के पत्थरों के नीचे कुचले जाने की पीड़ा से अधिक दुःखदायी नहीं है।

44. [ गवाश्वमहिषेभोष्ट्रश्वशृगालेडकैरहो ।

घोरै रणमिवारब्धं मार्गरोधकमाकुलैः ॥ ४४ ॥

gavāśvamahiṣebhoṣṭraśvaśṛgāleḍakairaho |
ghorai raṇamivārabdhaṃ mārgarodhakamākulaiḥ || 44 ||

The streets are filled with domestic animals and cattle of all kinds, that are let loose from their folds and stalls, to raise their commingled cries like the confused noise of battle in the blocked up paths. ]

सड़कें सभी प्रकार के घरेलू पशुओं और मवेशियों से भरी हुई हैं, जो अपने बाड़ों और थानों से खुले में घूम रहे हैं और अवरुद्ध रास्तों में युद्ध के भ्रमित शोर की तरह अपनी मिश्रित चीखें निकाल रहे हैं।

45. [पटैः पटपटाशब्दजलजालालिमालितैः ।

आक्रन्दन्त्यः स्त्रियो यान्ति स्थलपद्माचिता इव ॥ ४५ ॥

paṭaiḥ paṭapaṭāśabdajalajālālimālitaiḥ |
ākrandantyaḥ striyo yānti sthalapadmācitā iva || 45 ||

The weeping women were passing as lotus flowers on land, with their lotus like faces and feet and palms, and drops of tears fell like fluttering bees from their lotiform eyes and wet apparel upon the ground.]

[ संस्कृत में उपलब्ध ] रोती हुई स्त्रियाँ कमल के फूलों के समान भूमि पर जा रही थीं, उनके कमल के समान मुख, पैर और हथेलियाँ थीं, और उनके कमल के समान नेत्रों और गीले वस्त्रों से आँसू की बूँदें फड़फड़ाती हुई मधुमक्खियों केसमान भूमि पर गिर रही है जगह।

46. ​​​​[स्त्रीणां ज्वालालवाः पश्य लिहन्त्यलकवल्लरीः ।

कुर्वन्तोऽशोकपुष्पाभां करभा इव पन्नगीः ॥ ४६ ॥

strīṇāṃ jvālālavāḥ paśya lihantyalakavallarīḥ |
kurvanto'śokapuṣpābhāṃ karabhā iva pannagīḥ || 46 ||

The red taints and spots of alakavali, blazed as asoka flowers upon their foreheads and cheeks.] 

 उनके माथे और गालों पर अलकावलीके लाल पत्थर और अशोक के फूल किस तरह चमकते रहे थे।

47. [ हा हा हरिणशावाक्ष्याः पक्षलक्षणपक्ष्मसु ।

कुमार्गेष्विव विश्रान्तिमेति कार्शानवी शिखा ॥ ४७ ॥

hā hā hariṇaśāvākṣyāḥ pakṣalakṣaṇapakṣmasu |kumārgeṣviva viśrāntimeti kārśānavī śikhā || 47 ||

Alack for pity! that the furious flame of fire, should singe the black bee-like eyelids of our deer-eyed fairies; like the ruthless victor, that delights in his acts of inhumanity. ]

अफसोस की बात है! कि आग की प्रचंड ज्वाला हमारी मृग-नेत्र वाली परियों की काली मधुमक्खी-सी पलकों को जला दे; जैसे निर्दयी विजेता अपनी अमानवीय हरकतों में आनंद लेता है।

48. [ दह्यमानो विनिर्याति न कलत्रं विना नरः ।

अहो बत दुरुच्छेदाः प्राणिनां स्नेहवागुराः ॥ ४८ ॥

dahyamāno viniryāti na kalatraṃ vinā naraḥ |aho bata durucchedāḥ prāṇināṃ snehavāgurāḥ || 48 ||

O the bond of connubial love! that the faithful wife never fails to follow her burning lord, and cremates herself in the same flame with him. ]

हे दाम्पत्य प्रेम के बंधन! कि पतिव्रता पत्नी अपने जलते हुए पति का अनुसरण करने में कभी विफल नहीं होती, और उसके साथ उसी ज्वाला में अपना दाह संस्कार कर लेती है (इससे दाह संस्कार की प्रथा वाल्मीकि और विश्वामित्र के दिनों से भी पुरानी प्रतीत होती है)।

49. [ करी रभसनिर्लूनज्वलदङ्गारपादपः ।

प्लुष्टपुष्करकः कोपान्मग्नः पुष्करदं सरः ॥ ४९ ॥

karī rabhasanirlūnajvaladaṅgārapādapaḥ |

pluṣṭapuṣkarakaḥ kopānmagnaḥ puṣkaradaṃ saraḥ || 49 ||

The elephant being burnt in his trunk, in breaking the burning post to which he was tied by the leg, ran with violence to a lake of lotuses, in which he fell dead. ]

हाथी अपनी सूँड़ में जल गया, और जलते हुए खंभे को तोड़ता हुआ, जिससे वह पैर से बंधा हुआ था, और तेजी से कमलों के एक सरोवर की ओर भागा, जहाँ वह मर गया। (यहाँ समानार्थी शब्द "पुष्कर" का प्रयोग किया गया है, जिसका अर्थ है सरोवर, कमल और हाथी की सूंड)।

50. [ धूमोऽम्बुदपदं प्राप्य विलोलान्तस्तडिल्लतः ।

ज्वलदङ्गारनाराचनिकरं परिवर्षति ॥ ५० ॥

dhūmo'mbudapadaṃ prāpya vilolāntastaḍillataḥ |

jvaladaṅgāranārācanikaraṃ parivarṣati || 50 ||

The flames of fire flashing like flitting lightnings amidst the clouds of smoke in the air, were darting the darts of burning coals like bolts of thunder in showers.]

वायु में धुएँ के बादलों के बीच चमकती हुई बिजली की तरह चमकती हुई अग्नि की लपटें, गरज के समान जलते हुए अंगारों की वर्षा कर रही थीं ।

51. [देव धूमस्फुरद्वह्निकण आवर्तवृत्तिमान् ।

स्थित आपीडवात्तव्योम्नि रत्नपूर्ण इवार्णवः ॥ ५१ ॥

deva dhūmasphuradvahnikaṇa āvartavṛttimān |sthita āpīḍavāttavyomni ratnapūrṇa ivārṇavaḥ || 51 ||

Lord! the sparks of fire sparkling amidst the dusky clouds, appear as glittering gems in the bosom of the airy ocean, and seem by their twirling to gird the crown of heaven with the girdle of Pleiades.]

  हे प्रभु! सांवले प्राचीन काल के समुद्र तट पर चमकती हुई अग्नि की चिंगारियाँ, वायु सागर की छाती में चमकती हुई रत्नों की जैसी विशेषताएँ होती हैं, और ऐसी अनोखी घटनाएँ होती हैं कि वे अपनी चपलता से स्वर्ग के मुकुट को प्लीएडेस के करधनी से बचा कर रखती हैं।

52. [ गौरमम्बरमाभाति ज्वालाशिखरतेजसा ।

मृत्युनेवोत्सवे दत्तः कुङ्कुमाक्तकरण्डकः ॥ ५२ ॥

gauramambaramābhāti jvālāśikharatejasā |

mṛtyunevotsave dattaḥ kuṅkumāktakaraṇḍakaḥ || 52 ||

The sky was reddened by the light of the flaming fires, and appeared as the courtyard of Death dyed with purple hues in joy for reception of the souls of the dead. ]

धधकती आग की रोशनी से आकाश लाल हो गया था और ऐसा लग रहा था मानो मृत्यु का आंगन मृतकों की आत्माओं के स्वागत के लिए खुशी में बैंगनी रंग से रंगा हुआ हो।

53. [ अहो नु विषमं चेदं वर्तते वृत्तवर्जितम् ।

ध्रियन्ते राजनार्योऽपि वैरिवीरैरुदायुधैः ॥ ५३ ॥

aho nu viṣamaṃ cedaṃ vartate vṛttavarjitam |dhriyante rājanāryo'pi vairivīrairudāyudhaiḥ || 53 ||

Alas! the day and want of manners! that the royal dames are carried away by these armed ruffians by force.

अफसोस! वह दिन और शिष्टाचार का अभाव! जब राजसी स्त्रियों को ये सशस्त्र गुंडे बलपूर्वक उठा ले जाते हैं। ( ओ टेम्पोरा ओ मोरेस )।

54. [ लोलस्रग्दामकुसुमैर्मार्गप्राकारकारकैः ।

अर्धनिर्दग्धकबरीकीर्णवक्षस्थलस्तनाः ॥ ५४ ॥

lolasragdāmakusumairmārgaprākārakārakaiḥ |

ardhanirdagdhakabarīkīrṇavakṣasthalastanāḥ || 54 ||

Behold them dragged in the streets from their stately edifices, and strewing their paths with wreaths of flowers torn from their necks; while their half burnt locks are hanging loosely upon their bare breasts and bosoms. ]

देखो, उन्हें उनके भव्य भवनों से सड़कों पर घसीटा जा रहा है, और वे अपने गले से उतारे हुए फूलों की मालाओं से उनके मार्गों को बिखेर रहे हैं; जबकि उनके आधे जले हुए बाल उनके नंगे वक्षों और वक्षस्थलों पर ढीले होकर लटक रहे हैं।

55. [ आलोलाम्बरसंलक्ष्यनितम्बजघनस्थलाः ।

पतन्माणिक्यवलयवलितावनिमण्डलाः ॥ ५५ ॥

ālolāmbarasaṃlakṣyanitambajaghanasthalāḥ |

patanmāṇikyavalayavalitāvanimaṇḍalāḥ || 55 ||

Lo! their loose raiments uncovering their backs and loins, and the jewels dropt down, from their wrists, have strewn the ground with gems. ]

देखो! उनके ढीले वस्त्र उनकी पीठ और कमर को उजागर कर रहे हैं, और उनकी कलाइयों से नीचे गिरे हुए रत्नों ने धरती को रत्नों से भर दिया है ।

56. [ छिन्नहारलताजालविकीर्णामलमौक्तिकाः ।

दृष्टादृष्टस्तनश्रेणीपार्श्वोद्यत्कनकप्रभाः ॥ ५६ ॥

chinnahāralatājālavikīrṇāmalamauktikāḥ |

dṛṣṭādṛṣṭastanaśreṇīpārśvodyatkanakaprabhāḥ || 56 ||

Their necklaces are torn and their pearls are scattered about; their bodies are bared of their bodices, and their breasts appear to view in their golden hue.]

उनके हार फटे हुए हैं और मोती बिखरे हुए हैं; उनके शरीर उनकी चोली से रहित हैं, और उनके स्तन अपने सुनहरे रंग में दिखाई देते हैं।

57. [ कुररीकर्कशाक्रन्दमन्दीकृतरणारवाः ।

धारावाहास्रुतारावभिन्नपार्श्वविचेतनाः ॥ ५७ ॥

kurarīkarkaśākrandamandīkṛtaraṇāravāḥ |

dhārāvāhāsrutārāvabhinnapārśvavicetanāḥ || 57 ||

Their shrill cries and groans rising above the war cry, choked their breath and split their sides; and they fell insensible with their eyes dimmed by ceaseless floods of tears. ]

उनकी तीखी चीखें और कराहें युद्ध की पुकार से भी ऊंची उठ गईं, जिससे उनकी सांस रुक गई और उनकी भुजाएं फट गईं; और वे अचेत होकर गिर पड़े और उनकी आंखें अश्रुओं की निरंतर धारा से धुंधली हो गईं।

58. [ रक्तकर्दमवाष्पाम्बुक्लिन्नग्रन्धितवाससः ।

भुजमूलार्पितभुजैर्नीयमाना बलान्नृभिः ॥ ५८ ॥

raktakardamavāṣpāmbuklinnagrandhitavāsasaḥ |

bhujamūlārpitabhujairnīyamānā balānnṛbhiḥ || 58 ||

They fell in a body with their arms twisted about the necks of one another, and the ends of their cloths tied to each other's; and in this way they were dragged by force of the ruffians, with their bodies mangled in blood. ]

वे एक समूह में गिर पड़े, उनकी भुजाएँ एक दूसरे की गर्दनों में मरोड़ी गईं, और उनके कपड़ों के सिरे एक दूसरे से बँधे हुए थे; और इस प्रकार वे बदमाशों द्वारा बलपूर्वक घसीटे गए, और उनके शरीर रक्त से लथपथ हो गए।

59. [ क इवास्मिन्परित्राता स्यादित्यादीनवीक्षितैः ।

उत्पलालीव वर्षद्भिः परिरोदितसैनिकाः ॥ ५९ ॥

ka ivāsminparitrātā syādityādīnavīkṣitaiḥ |utpalālīva varṣadbhiḥ pariroditasainikāḥ || 59 ||

"Ah! who will save them from this state," cried the royal soldiers, with their piteous looks on the sad plight of the females and shedding big drops of their tears like lotuses. ]

"आह! उन्हें इस स्थिति से कौन बचाएगा," राजसैनिकों ने स्त्रियों की दुःखद दुर्दशा पर करुण दृष्टि डालते हुए तथा कमल के समान बड़े-बड़े आँसुओं की बूँदें गिराते हुए कहा ।

60. [ मृणालकोमलाच्छोरुमूलजालैः सुनिर्मलैः ।

स्वच्छाम्बरतलालक्ष्यैराकाशनलिनीनिभाः ॥ ६० ॥

mṛṇālakomalācchorumūlajālaiḥ sunirmalaiḥ |

svacchāmbaratalālakṣyairākāśanalinīnibhāḥ || 60 ||

The bright face of the sky turned black at the horrible sight, and it looked with its blue lotus-like eyes of the clouds, on the fair lotus-like damsels thus scattered on the ground.

उस भयंकर दृश्य को देखकर आकाश का उज्ज्वल मुख काला पड़ गया और उसने बादलों की अपनी नीली कमल-जैसी आँखों से भूमि पर बिखरी हुई सुन्दर कमल-जैसी युवतियों को देखा।

61. [ आलोलमाल्यवसनाभरणाङ्गरागा बाष्पाकुलाततचलालकवल्लरीकाः ।

आनन्दमन्दरनिरन्तरमथ्यमानात्कामार्णवात्समुदिता इव राजलक्ष्म्यः ॥ ६१ ॥

ālolamālyavasanābharaṇāṅgarāgā bāṣpākulātatacalālakavallarīkāḥ |

ānandamandaranirantaramathyamānātkāmārṇavātsamuditā iva rājalakṣmyaḥ || 61 ||

Thus was the goddess of royal prosperity, decorated as she was with her waving and pendant locks, her flowing garments, flowery chaplets and gemming ornaments brought to her end like these ladies, after her enjoyment of the pleasures of royalty and gratification of all her desires. ]

इस प्रकार राजसी समृद्धि की देवी, अपने लहराते और लटकते बालों, अपने लहराते वस्त्रों, फूलों के हार और रत्नजटित आभूषणों से सुशोभित होकर, इन स्त्रियों की तरह राजसी सुख भोगने और अपनी सभी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति के बाद मर गई।
