*ओ३म् न वा उ॑ दे॒वाः क्षुध॒मिद्व॒धं द॑दुरु॒ताशि॑त॒मुप॑ गच्छन्ति मृ॒त्यव॑: ।*

*उ॒तो र॒यिः पृ॑ण॒तो नोप॑ दस्यत्यु॒तापृ॑णन्मर्डि॒तारं॒ न वि॑न्दते ॥*

ऋग्वेद 10/117/1

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

दु:ख ही दु:ख भरमार

दु:खी भूख से सन्सार 

बढ़ रही है बेरोजगारी 

चहुं दिशि हाहाकार

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

कटे हुए रहते समाज से 

कलुषित कृपण कुत्सित

जो सापेक्षों हो को हैं देते 

पाते हैं वो सत्कार 

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

लोभी कृपण का मित्र ना कोई 

ना ही सचन सहाय

सुख सहायता वह क्या पाएँ 

जीवन करें वो असार

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

ज्ञान, बल, सुख, प्रेम, मैत्रियाँ 

ये धन  है सब अनमोल

जो अमोल इन धनों से वञ्चित 

उनका कुधन  अहंकार

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

पेट तो दोनों ही प्रकार से 

भरते हैं भरने वाले 

इक पाएँ  अमूल्य सम्पत्ति 

दूजा असुख नीकार

भूख क्या देवों ने दे दी

दु:ख ही दु:ख भरमार

दान प्रशंसा

देवों ने मनुष्य को भूख क्या दी है, एक मौत दे दी है। दुनिया भूख, बेकारी, गरीबी के मारे मरी जा रही है। इसलिए दूसरे को खिलाकर खाना, गरीबों के पेट का सवाल को हल करना वास्तव में बड़ा भारी पुण्य है, बड़ा भारी कर्तव्य है। यह मरने से बचाना है, पर इसका यह अर्थ नहीं कि भूख और गरीबी का ही मरने से कोई सम्बन्ध है। परमेश्वर ने केवल भूख रूप में ही मौत नहीं दी है, अपितु जो खूब खाते-पीते अमीर लोग हैं उन पर भी उनकी मौत नाना प्रकार से पहुंचती है। ऐसा अमीर से अमीर कौन मनुष्य है जो मरेगा नहीं? अतः दूसरे बेशक कहीं भूखे मरते हों, मेरा तो पेट भर रहा है इस प्रकार निश्चिंत हो जाना मूर्खता है। जिसके पास है, उसे ज़रूरत वाले को देना ही चाहिए। हम अकेले नहीं हैं, किंतु हमारा जीवन संपूर्ण जन समाज के साथ जुड़ा हुआ है। यदि हम इतना समझते हो तो हमारा यह डर हट जाए कि दूसरे को दान देने से हमारा धन घट जाएगा। हम जिस पात्र को धरना देते हैं वह हम ही हैं और उस दिन से जो एक आवश्यकता पूरी होती है उसे हमारी उन्नति होती है और अंत में हमारा वैयक्तिक सुख और धन भी बढ़ता है। हम रोज़ देखते हैं कि जो ज़रूरत पर देता है, उसे ज़रूरत पर उदारता पूर्वक मिलता है। जो ना देने वाले होते हैं वह समाज से कटे हुए रहते हैं, उनका ना कोई मित्र होता है ना उन्हें कोई सुख सहायता पहुंचाने की आवश्यकता समझता है। मनुष्य धन से नहीं जीता। जिनके बिन अब रह नहीं सकता है वह तो ज्ञान, बल, सुख, सौहार्द, प्रेम आदि अत्यंत मूल्यवान वृत्तियां हैं। इसलिए यद्यपि इतना ठीक है कि संसार में भूखे के साथ पेट भरे भी मरते ही हैं और दान देने वाले और न देने वाले दोनों प्रकार के पेट भरे मरते हैं; तो भी भेज दिया है कि देने वाले को तो यह अमूल्य जीवनदाई संपत्तियां मिलती हैं और उसका धन भी घटता नहीं; पर ना देने वाला पुरुष इनसे वंचित होकर अपना सुख हीन संकुचित मुर्दा सा ही जीवन बिताता है।

du:kh hee du:kh bharamaar

du:khee bhookh se sansaar 

badha rahee hai berojagaaree 

chahun dishi haahaakaar

bhookh kyaa devon ne de dee

katay hue rahate samaaj se 

kalushit kripan kutsit

jo saapekshon ho ko hain dete 

paate hain vo satkaar 

bhookh kyaa devon ne de dee

lobhee kripan ka mitra naa koee 

na hee sachan sahaay

sukh sahaayata vah kya paen 

jeevan karen vo asaar

bhookh kya devon ne de dee

gyaan, bal, sukh, prem, maitriyaan 

ye dhan  hai sab anamol

jo amol in dhanon se vanchit 

unaka kudhan  ahankaar

Hunger, what have the devaas given

There is only sorrow and plenty of sorrow

The world is sad with hunger

Unemployment is increasing

There is hue and cry all around

Hunger, what have the devaass given

We remain cut off from society 

The tainted miserly, vile

Those who are dependent on others,

Give them respect

What hunger, devaas have given them

The greedy miser has no friend

No help or comfort

What happiness or help can he get

He makes his life worthless

What hunger, devaas have given them

Knowledge, power, happiness, love, friendship

All these wealth are priceless

Those who are deprived of these priceless wealth

Theirs are filled with anger, ego

What hunger, Gods have given them

Those who fill their stomachs

Get filled in both ways

One gets priceless wealth

The other is unhappiness

What hunger, devaas have given them

The world is full of sorrow and grief

The world is filled with hunger

Charity Praise

The Gods have not given hunger to man, they have given him death. The world is dying of hunger, unemployment and poverty. Therefore, feeding others and solving the problem of the stomach of the poor is indeed a great virtue, a great duty. This is to save from death, but it does not mean that only hunger and poverty have any relation with death. God has not given death only in the form of hunger, but death reaches even those rich people who eat and drink well in many ways. Which man is so rich, even the richest of the rich, who will not die? Therefore, it is foolish to be carefree thinking that even if others are dying of hunger, my stomach is full. Whoever has something, he must give it to the needy. We are not alone, but our life is connected with the entire society. If we understand this much, then our fear that by giving charity to others, our wealth will decrease will go away.  We are the person whom we give our respect to and from the day a need is fulfilled, we progress and finally our personal happiness and wealth also increase. We see every day that the one who gives when needed, gets generously when needed. Those who do not give remain cut off from society, they have no friends and no one feels the need to provide them happiness or help. Man does not live by money. Knowledge, strength, happiness, harmony, love etc. are extremely valuable qualities without which one cannot live. Therefore, although it is true that in this world, along with the hungry, people also die with full stomachs and both the donors and non-donors die with full stomachs; still it is said that the donor gets these invaluable life-giving assets and his wealth also does not decrease; but the person who does not give, deprived of these, spends his life like a dead person, devoid of happiness.
